Bauer Hotel

Bauer Hotel Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The 119-room Bauer Hotel is a convenient two-minute walk from St. Mark's Square in the heart of Venice. This exclusive Art Deco-influenced property has a grand lobby full of gold accents and chandeliers as well as traditionally decorated rooms with high ceilings and big, modern bathrooms. The hotel features a restaurant and two two bars; Bar Canale has an outdoor terrace and Grand Canal views. There is nice variety in the daily breakfast buffet, but rooms lack tea or coffee facilities. Rates are typically lower at the nearby Hotel Saturnia, but the Bauer is arguably a bit more elegant.

Hotel Saturnia & International

Hotel Saturnia & International Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The highlight of the historic Hotel Saturnia is its location on a busy shopping street in San Marco, just a short walk from the Piazza San Marco and important sights such as the Rialto Bridge. And the rooms are attractive -- with charming historic details such as wood beamed ceilings and mahogany headboards -- although there are some variations (particularly in the quality of the bathrooms) even between rooms of the same category. Though the hotel lacks a spa, fitness center, and pool, it still offers more amenities than many other Venice hotels, offering a top-notch restaurant, a rooftop terrace (complete with an outdoor shower), and free passes to a nearby gym.

Hotel Locanda Vivaldi

Hotel Locanda Vivaldi Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 27-room Hotel Locanda Vivaldi has a prime location, overlooking the Grand Canal and a short walk from Piazza San Marco, the lively square where many of Venice's top tourist attractions are located. While the hotel lacks the conveniences of larger hotels (such as a fitness center and a spa), it has been updated with free Wi-Fi throughout the property and modern marble bathrooms. Room decor is classic, with antique-style furniture, crystal chandeliers, and rich patterns. But some may find the effect stuffy, especially in rooms with varying patterns all in the same color, and bedspreads are lower quality. Guests receive free breakfast, either in the dining room or delivered to their door, and the hotel features an on-site bar and a seasonal outdoor terrace restaurant (open April through October). Many restaurants are located nearby (though some are touristy and expensive).

Hotel Rialto Venezia

Hotel Rialto Venezia Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 79-room Hotel Rialto Venezia has a fabulous, central location overlooking the Rialto Bridge and Grand Canal. Features include a canal-side outdoor terrace and quality breakfast buffet. Rooms are clean and have nice details like glass chandeliers, but the decor is dated and a bit worn. The location is near a vaporetto stop and host of attractions, while some guests complain about noise.

Locanda Orseolo

Locanda Orseolo Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Locanda Orseolo is a 12-room guesthouse located in the heart of Venice, a short walk from Piazza San Marco. Traditional, elegant rooms have theatrical wall murals, glass chandeliers, and small flat-screen TVs. This restored Venetian home has charming, original elements such as exposed beam ceilings. A quality free breakfast is served in a room overlooking a small canal, but there is no elevator and canal-facing rooms can experience some early morning noise. Rates are among the most competitive in the area for what you get.

Aqua Palace Hotel

Aqua Palace Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A 24-room restored palazzo in the heart of Venice, Aqua Palace Hotel is conveniently located halfway between the Rialto Bridge and St. Mark’s Square. Soft lighting, elegant chandeliers, and classic Venetian architecture give this boutique a peaceful, romantic atmosphere. Refined rooms have small flat-screen TVs, stocked minibars, and inviting, big bathrooms. This charming hotel overlooks a small canal.

Hotel Ai Reali

Hotel Ai Reali Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A 32-room boutique in a restored 17th century palazzo, Hotel Ai Reali is located in the heart of Venice halfway between the Rialto Bridge and Piazza San Marco. Rooms are big and elegant with gilded, carved headboards, original hardwood floors, and big marble bathrooms. An inviting restaurant and bar both have canal views; a top floor spa offers the rare features of a pool, whirlpool, and sauna. It's one of the best upscale picks in Venice.

Corte Di Gabriela

Corte Di Gabriela Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A 10-room boutique in one of Venice’s most elegant neighborhoods, Corte Di Gabriela is a chic residence that blends modern polish with historical touches. Located in San Marco an easy walk from the city’s top attractions, this quiet hotel has a pretty internal courtyard and lovely breakfast room with big buffet. No two stylish rooms are the same; some have frescoes on the ceiling while others have canal views -- all have big, modern bathrooms, iPads, and free Wi-Fi. All in all, it's one of the best upscale choices in the neighborhood, but it's worth comparing rates with the Hotel Saturnia.

Hotel Flora

Hotel Flora Rating: 3.0 Pearls

A 40-room family-run boutique near Piazza San Marco, Hotel Flora is a quiet escape in central Venice. A quality breakfast is served in the beautiful interior garden during the warm months, and guests can also bring drinks from the bar into the garden during the evening. Rooms are quaint and clean with free Wi-Fi, but some rooms are on the dark side (as is often typical in Venice). Upgrading to the deluxe suite gets significantly more space and polish.
