Hotel Canal Grande

Hotel Canal Grande Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This luxurious 22-room boutique is housed in a centuries-old palace located along the Grand Canal, near the main train station in Venice. Decadent rooms have modern amenities including flat-screen TVs and comfortable beds, but the use of rich patterns in gold and blues, the classic artwork on the walls, and the Rococo-style furniture might be a bit too much to some. Rooms facing the canal have better views (though some have small windows), but those overlooking the lovely square are quieter. Though location is convenient for those arriving to Venice by train, the hotel is a 25-minute walk from Piazza San Marco, and it lacks a full restaurant.

Papadopoli Venice - MGallery Collection

Papadopoli Venice - MGallery Collection Rating: 4.0 Pearls

An upscale 96-room hotel decorated in 18th-century Italian style, the Papadopoli Venice - MGallery Collection is a convenient pick near the train station and bus terminal. There is a grand, traditional lobby with piano and marble floors along with a restaurant set in a striking winter garden. Rooms are bright and spacious with Venetian chandeliers and big bathrooms, but some experience noise from the nearby bus terminal.

Ca' San Giorgio

Ca' San Giorgio Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Ca' San Giorgio is one Venice's most romantic bed and breakfasts. The property has just eight rooms inside a renovated convent steps away from the Grand Canal. Beyond the fabulous location, guests love the private terraces that overlook the city's famed canals. However, cramped spaces -- especially in the bathrooms and some of the public areas -- have caused complaints. And for travelers who prefer a selection of on-site amenities, note that the Ca' San Giorgio doesn't offer much beyond the free breakfast.

Hotel Al Ponte Mocenigo

Hotel Al Ponte Mocenigo Rating: 3.5 Pearls

A 10-room boutique on a small canal, Hotel Al Ponte Mocenigo is an intimate, quiet pick in the Santa Croce neighborhood of Venice. Located near a Vaporetto stop and a 10-minute walk from the Rialto Bridge, this hotel has pretty historic details such as wood beam ceilings. Rooms have Murano glass chandeliers, small flat-screen TVs, and gilded mirrors. Both Wi-Fi and breakfast are free, but the traditional decor might not suit all tastes. All in all, it's a terrific value.

Hotel Antiche Figure

Hotel Antiche Figure Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The Hotel Antiche Figure is a charming mid-range boutique option in Santa Croce, a calm neighborhood near the train station that's removed from the tourist sights. The 22 rooms are all spacious and stately (if not luxurious) with crystal chandeliers; some have balconies with fantastic views of the Grand Canal, while others have views of a brick wall. Modern touches include flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. Upscale bathrooms have marble tile, towel warmers, and bidets; many have shower/tub combos, but some have walk-in showers that can spill water onto the bathroom floor. Hotel amenities are few: just a breakfast room, communal terrace, and bar.

BEST WESTERN Hotel Olimpia

BEST WESTERN Hotel Olimpia Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The mid-range, 35-room Best Western Hotel Olimpia has a rare back garden for in-season al fresco dining and sunbathing. The nearby bus terminal offers access to the airport, but main Venice attractions take some time to reach on foot. Rooms range from small and pleasant to big and elegant; all are decorated in an 18th century Venetian style and have nice modern bathrooms. A free breakfast has a wide variety and Wi-Fi is also free, but some rooms experience noise from the bus terminal.
