Villa Spalletti Trivelli

Villa Spalletti Trivelli Rating: 4.5 Pearls

This upscale boutique hotel, with just 12 rooms, is housed in a gorgeous historic mansion less than 10 minutes from the Trevi Fountain. Despite its small size, the hotel goes above and beyond with the amenities, offering a gym, spa, lovely outdoor garden, excellent free breakfast, and free Wi-Fi. The rooms blend elegant decor (antique furniture and artwork, patterned bedspreads, crown moldings) with modern technology (iPod docks, flat-screen TVs). The luxurious, large marble bathrooms are the highlight -- all have separate showers and tubs. Many of the rooms overlook the hotel's private courtyard.
Hotel Trevi Collection

Hotel Trevi Collection Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The upper-middle-range, six-room Hotel Trevi Collection is housed in a historic 16th century mansion, but its interiors have a modern, vibrant feel. Rooms have wood floors, flat-screen TVs, and clean-lined decor in shades of blacks, browns, and grays; even the standard rooms are large (particularly by European standards). Bathrooms are sleek, with double sinks, bidets, and either impressive walk-in showers or appealing shower/tub combos. (Though we did spot some water stains and rust.) There's no fitness center, but there is a nice, tranquil relaxation area with Jacuzzi tub. Free Wi-Fi and free breakfast add value, and the location near the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps is excellent.
Hotel Fontana

Hotel Fontana Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The Hotel Fontana is located on Piazza di Trevi with views facing the famous Trevi Fountain. A former monastery, this property offers 25 rooms with basic, traditional Italian decor that feels reminiscent of its former monastic days. Guests can choose between rooms facing the fountain, or one of the quieter rooms in the back of the building. Though they are compact, rooms are clean and have hardwood floors, flat-screen TVs, and private en-suite bathrooms. Perks here include the rooftop terrace and lounge along with a free breakfast buffet. Many guests rise early to get the best seats in front of the fountain.
Albergo Del Senato

Albergo Del Senato Rating: 3.0 Pearls

With arguably one of the best locations in Rome -- facing the Pantheon -- the mid-range, 56-room Albergo attracts many return visitors. Though the hotel does not have the amenities of a larger hotel (such as a spa or fitness center), it does have a cheery breakfast room, where free breakfasts of hot and cold items are served in the mornings, as well as a rooftop terrace with sweeping views of the city. Rooms have thin comforters and gaudy wallpaper, but wood floors, crown moldings, and wall sconces add charm. They are kept clean, and there are numerous room types so families and groups can be easily accommodated. Bathrooms feel upscale, with marble or mosaic tile and towel warmers.
