Mandarin Oriental, New York

Mandarin Oriental, New York Rating: 5.0 Pearls

It's not an icon like the Plaza or the Pierre -- but so what? The Mandarin Oriental, located across Columbus Circle from Central Park, offers a dizzying array of modern luxuries -- a 75-foot pool, one of the city's best spas, sweeping views from nearly every common area, and superb on-site fine-dining options, to name a few -- even as it upholds traditional values and outstanding service.
Trump International Hotel And Tower

Trump International Hotel And Tower Rating: 4.5 Pearls

An ostentatiously luxurious hotel with a supremely well-trained staff, and huge, elegant rooms designed by Ivanka Trump herself. The location (overlooking Central Park at Columbus Circle) can't be beat. The hotel also has two highly regarded restaurants, a great spa, and an in-house pool.
The Empire Hotel

The Empire Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

For the price, you'll be hard-pressed to find this level of on-site amenities at any other New York hotel. The Empire's rooftop bar and pool, both with excellent views of the upscale Upper West Side, make this 422-room hotel one of the city's best values, despite the small rooms.
The Lucerne

The Lucerne Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Far from the Times Square crowds, on the relaxed, upscale Upper West Side, the 250-room Lucerne offers small but classically styled, comfortable rooms (all renovated in 2009), prompt, dedicated service, and proximity to great kid-friendly attractions like the Museum of Natural History and Central Park.
NYLO New York City

NYLO New York City Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The NYLO New York City is a beautifully designed upscale hotel on the Upper West Side. Decor combines industrial-chic pieces with Art Deco details in both the public spaces and rooms. The hotel's three restaurants are each notable in their own right and there is a wonderful library off of the lobby. Outdoor terraces on the 14th and 16th floors provide sweeping views of the Hudson River, Central Park, and Midtown skyline. But the on-site fitness center is small, and there is a pesky fee for Wi-Fi in the rooms (it is free in public spaces). Free Wi-Fi can be found at the similarly priced Hotel Belleclaire across the street, but rooms there aren't as stylish.
Marrakech Hotel

Marrakech Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This 127-room walk-up hotel (no elevator!) is a bit cramped and worn around the edges, but a beautiful Moroccan-style lobby and a cocktail lounge from Sookk Thai restaurant make it a fair option if you want to be near Central Park and Columbia University, in the nontouristy northern outskirts of the Upper West Side.
Belleclaire New York

Belleclaire New York Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Once considered a skyscraper on the Upper West Side before other buildings entered the scene, the Belleclaire Hotel -- built circa 1903 -- is a family-run, attractive upper-middle-range option with 240 modern rooms. Themed suites are named after former guests Mark Twain and Babe Ruth. The charming lobby has a European vibe with original mosaic tiling still in tact, a coffee bar, and large atrium that delivers lots of natural light. It’s a nice place to pick up a (free) copy of the New York Times and have a (free) spot of tea before hitting the tree-lined streets for restaurants and dining, which the hotel lacks. The NYLO New York City across the street does offer dining options on-site, as well as slightly more stylish rooms, but the Belleclaire offers free in-room Wi-Fi while the NYLO does not.
Excelsior Hotel

Excelsior Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The upper-middle-range Excelsior boasts an excellent Upper West Side location, across the street from the Museum of Natural History, one block from Central Park, and within walking distance of three subway lines. Art Deco-inspired rooms are clean and modern, though they lack mini-fridges and there is a pesky fee for Wi-Fi. Hotel features include spacious fitness and business centers, a relaxing lounge and breakfast area, and a popular restaurant for brunch on the weekends.
Belnord Hotel

Belnord Hotel Rating: 2.5 Pearls

The Belnord Hotel offers rooms at some of the most reasonable prices in Manhattan –- this is truly a budget property. The trade-off is space; the rooms are minuscule (the Double Rooms only fit a bed and one end table –- that’s it). However, each room has a private bath and the hotel is clean and quiet. Located on a residential street on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, the Belnord is removed from the bustle and noise of Midtown and is a short subway ride away to many sights. Offering limited amenities to keep the price down, the hotel is good for guests only looking for a place to shower and sleep.
Comfort Inn Central Park West

Comfort Inn Central Park West Rating: 2.5 Pearls

The Comfort Inn Central Park West is a solid budget option on Manhattan's quiet Upper West Side. Though the rooms are dated and some are small, the hotel offers basic amenities and some perks, including free breakfast, newspapers, and Wi-Fi. Smoking rooms are available which, while a pro for some travelers, will bother others. Still, prices are often among the lowest in this great location, just down the street from Central Park and near some of the city's best museums. It's also worth considering the nearby, and nicer, NYLO New York City and Belleclaire New York, which can have similar rates.
