Grand Lucayan

Grand Lucayan Rating: 4.0 Pearls

It's the top lodging on Grand Bahama -- immaculate grounds; great beds; convenient, scenic location. It has a wide range of rooms, features, and dining options, but it can feel a bit impersonal.

Melia Nassau Beach Resort

Melia Nassau Beach Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Sheraton Nassau Beach Resort has great rooms, a gorgeous beachfront, three great pools, a top-notch gym, and a friendly and cheerful staff. But it's a massive property -- 694 rooms -- with little to eat nearby. This means that guests are stuck with the Sheraton's own overpriced, mediocre fare. Still, it's a great value.

Paradise Cove Beach Resort

Paradise Cove Beach Resort Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The family-run and authentic Paradise Cove is located on the western coast of Grand Bahama, 30 minutes from Freeport and along Deadman’s Reef, one of the best snorkel spots on the island. There are just two comfortable two-bedroom villas: one blue and one yellow. Though the bar and grill can get a cruise ship crowd during the day, guests can easily find their own peace and quiet on the sand and even more so in the evening. This is ideal for couples or small groups who can transform the evening vibe into anything they want it to be: party-hearty, kid-friendly, or just plain romantic. Paddleboards (when the waves are not choppy), kayaks, and other rentals are available. A car is recommended, if only to keep the fridge stocked.

Atlantis - Coral Towers

Atlantis - Coral Towers Rating: 3.0 Pearls

With 600-plus rooms, the comfortable Coral Towers (formerly the Brittania Beach Hotel) is a section of Atlantis that appeals to mid-range travelers -- mostly families. It's cheaper than the Royal Tower but closer to the action (and crowds) than the budget-friendly Beach Tower. Though decor and amenities are similar to the Beach Tower, Coral offers larger room options, such as the Regal Suite, which has two full bathrooms. It sits next to the harbor (some rear-facing balconies have views of it), and offers easy access to Marina Village for more choice in restaurants, shops and after-dinner strolls among the yachts. In the front is the Paradise Lagoon for non-motorized water sports (for a fee). Expect to pay a hefty fee for just about everything, but this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip for many.

Island Seas Resort

Island Seas Resort Rating: 2.5 Pearls

This 189-unit condo complex is located on a quiet stretch of beach called Silver Point, on the southern coast of Grand Bahama Island. Despite its aging exterior, most of the spacious one- and two-bedroom units have been spruced up with new appliances, mattresses, and fresh decor. Service is spotty and time-share pitches are the norm, but past that, the relaxed vibe gives those who want a simple vacation (think turquoise waves, an outdoor pool, and fully equipped kitchens) a chance for real peace and quiet, save for the occasional vendor. Two restaurants, an outdoor bar, excursions, and a shuttle to Port Lucaya are useful features, but a car is still recommended.
