Gran Hotel La Florida

Gran Hotel La Florida Rating: 5.0 Pearls

With a fairly removed location in the hills that ring the city, the 70-room Gran Hotel La Florida has a history as a luxurious, star-studded getaway far from the frenzy of Barcelona's crowds. Built in 1924, it has drawn celebrities from writer Ernest Hemingway to actor Rock Hudson through the years. Relaxation is the focus here -- from the beautiful indoor/outdoor pool to the tranquil Zen Zone Spa. Guest rooms feature contemporary furnishings in soothing neutral tones, great views of either the city or the Pyrenees Mountains, and spacious marble bathrooms. Apart from an adjacent amusement park, there is not much in the immediate vicinity, so those who want convenient sightseeing should consider a hotel in the city center.

Casa Fuster Hotel

Casa Fuster Hotel Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The 105-room Casa Fuster is an upscale historic boutique near high-end shopping and Modernist architecture. The building itself is one of the most prominent examples of this style, with an elaborate façade and ornate marble interiors. Elegant rooms have pastel-colored walls, oversized headboards, and great amenities such as flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, Loewe toiletries, and surround sound systems. Some even have small in-room saunas, balconies and hydro-massage showers. But quarters can be tight, and king-size beds are really two smaller beds pushed together. Hotel features include a Mediterranean restaurant as well as a beautiful rooftop deck with a small pool and gorgeous panoramic views of Barcelona. Beautiful Café Vienes is a favorite among artists, intellectuals and locals, and its weekly jazz nights have performers such as Woody Allen and the New Orleans Rag Trio.

El Palace Hotel

El Palace Hotel Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The Palace oozes elegance and old-world charm. Housed in an early 20th-century building a few blocks from the Gothic Quarter, the hotel is popular among well-heeled families, couples, and business travelers. The property boasts a Michelin-starred restaurant, Caelis; car service to the airport and major attractions; and a small but modern fitness center. The exclusive spa features the only Temazcal sauna in Spain, Anne Semonin products, and traditional Maya treatments. Classic, elegant rooms have upholstered walls, plush beds, and modern bathrooms with separate showers and tubs. Some even have Roman bath-style tubs. Updated in-room amenities include flat-screen TVs, minibars, DVD players, and free Wi-Fi. But there are no coffeemakers in the rooms, and you should expect to pay a hefty price for breakfast.

Catalonia Ramblas

Catalonia Ramblas Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Housed in the former headquarters of a renowned local newspaper, the Catalonia Ramblas features an unusual facade with a leaf motif that dates back to 1903. Inside, the decor is modern and minimalist, but lacks the historic charm of the hotel's exterior. Suites are spacious and some even have terraces with tiny splash pools. Standard rooms, however, feel a bit cramped. A chic courtyard with a pool and snack bar draws the crowds in the warmer months, but the hotel's main draw is its central location in the heart of Barcelona. Such a prime spot, however, means that the price tends to be a bit steep.

Hotel Murmuri

Hotel Murmuri Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Housed in a lovely 19th-century building, the Hotel Murmuri is an elegant boutique that has been completely modernized while still maintaining a romantic appeal (think plush interiors and low lighting). Rooms are stylishly decorated in creams and browns, and feature full-body mirrors and floor-to-ceiling windows; some have charming balconies. Stand-out features include the chic Murmuri Restaurant and arty Marfil Bar. The property has limited amenities, however, as it only offers a small rooftop terrace and lacks a pool and fitness center (though guests do have free access to facilities at the nearby Hotel Majestic sister property). Also, rates here are higher than some nearby options, and Wi-Fi comes with a fee.

Hotel Espana

Hotel Espana Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Located on a quiet side street off Barcelona's main tourist thoroughfare La Rambla, this 1859 building was redesigned as a hotel in the early 20th century by celebrated Modernist architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. A restoration in 2010 kept many of the historic and design features, including a stunning carved stone fireplace in the bar. The striking, contemporary decor gives the hotel a very stylish flair, from the dramatic light fixtures in the common areas to the staircase that snakes up the property. There is also a great food program on the property including a restaurant by Michelin-starred chef Martín Berasategui. A rooftop pool and bar is open in the warmer months. Some nearby hotels have lower rates, but don't offer the same history or style.

NH Podium

NH Podium Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The NH Podium is housed in a lovely 19th-century building that blends seamlessly with its charming surroundings in the city's Eixample district. Inside, it has been thoroughly modernized, with 145 spacious rooms and suites that offer the contemporary furnishings, flat-screen TVs, and stocked minibars that are standard for the NH brand. The rooftop terrace is a major highlight, with potted plants, chic furniture, and a terraza bar that make for a pretty setting to take in the city views. Its outdoor pool, however, is a bit on the small side. Dining options include Mediterranean cuisine at the Corella restaurant and a daily breakfast buffet, though there are less expensive alternatives in the surrounding area.

Hotel Catalonia Berna

Hotel Catalonia Berna Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This 124-room historic building first graced the streets of Barcelona in 1864 and is one of the city's very first residential buildings. It's been declared a historic monument within the Eixample district. The exterior features colorful but muted paintings, which set it apart from nearby buildings. But inside, while the rooms are up-to-date with flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, they're fairly standard in design. The decor isn't flashy or ultra modern, and the bathrooms are basic with plastic shower curtains -- and small. Terrace rooms offer a bit more space, with open balconies that offer views of nearby buildings. A decent restaurant and free daily breakfast are about the only extras here -- there's no fitness center, spa, or pool. The central location in Eixample is ideal, but guests looking for more amenities might check out the nearby -- and comparably priced -- Barcelona Center.

H10 Raco Del Pi

H10 Raco Del Pi Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Housed in a renovated 18th-century building in the heart if the Gothic Quarter, the H10 Raco del Pi is a solid mid-range pick for those who want to explore the city on foot. The no-frills rooms are clean and contemporary, with bright red accent walls, modern artwork, and flat-screen TVs. But mattresses are hard, and though bathrooms are spotless, some guests complain about the sudden changes in water temperature. There’s little in the way of amenities, but the hotel does feature a few nice freebies, including a welcome glass of cava, coffee and snacks in the lobby, and free Wi-Fi.

Hotel HCC St. Moritz

Hotel HCC St. Moritz Rating: 3.5 Pearls

HCC St. Moritz is a 91-room hotel housed in a lovely classical building that dates back to 1883. The hotel's interior spaces, however, do not quite match the elegance of its facade. The restaurant and bar look somewhat lackluster, with wall-to-wall carpeting and matching peach furniture that make for a chain-like feel. The generic vibe continues in the guest rooms, which have a brown-and-cream color scheme and furnishings with a mid-century look. Though the rooms are large, the bathrooms are a bit on the small side. An enormous breakfast buffet and free Wi-Fi are definite pluses, but it is the hotel's central location that is the big draw.
