Hesperia Tower Hotel

Hesperia Tower Hotel Rating: 5.0 Pearls

This modern, statuesque high-rise hotel towers above the financial center in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, a city to the southwest of Barcelona. The retro-modern decor is trendy; in the lobby, plush seating is set low to the floor, and the two bars and two restaurants are stylish. The rooftop restaurant, Evo, is the most impressive of all; it's enclosed by a domed-glass ceiling and offers incredible panoramic views of the city. Each room is equipped with flat-screen TVs and iPod docks, and chairs and sofas are upholstered in crushed velvet. The bathrooms are clean and modern, and feature Bulgari bath products. There's also an indoor pool and fitness center, though they only can be accessed for an additional cost. This 280-room property is great for travelers with business in the area, but leisure travelers will find little reason to stay here.

Rey Juan Carlos I Hotel

Rey Juan Carlos I Hotel Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The Rey Juan Carlos I Hotel is a luxury property with 432 rooms in the Les Corts district of Barcelona. The expansive grounds of the hotel have a lush garden, an outdoor pool with a poolside bar, and a lovely Mediterranean restaurant with terrace dining in the summer. Inside the hotel is a restaurant, a huge fitness center, a spa with an indoor pool, and an Ayurveda spa offering natural medicinal services. The exclusive Executive Floor has its own private reception and lounge. The hotel is a bit far from the main attractions of the city. Another luxury hotel outside the city is the Hesperia Tower Hotel, which is closer to the airport, but does not have an outdoor pool.

Alma Barcelona

Alma Barcelona Rating: 5.0 Pearls

A smartly designed luxury boutique hotel, the seven-floor Alma Barcelona has 72 quiet, upscale rooms with flat-panel TVs and free Wi-Fi. Unlike the nearby Claris and Majestic, the pool here is indoors, so weather will never spoil your swim. The rooftop terrace has first-rate views of the Eixample and Sagrada Familia. Style here has a starring role: design elements include fingerprint swiping instead of room keys, and architectural features such as a minimalist light-filled atrium. The Alma is a chic and serene spot for travelers who want Barcelona cool and an Eixample location a half block from Passeig de Gracia shopping.

Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona

Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The 98-room Mandarin Oriental is one of the most luxurious hotels in Barcelona, and certainly has one of the most recognizable hotel brand names in the city. It has a great location on Passeig de Gracia, and offers all the high-end amenities one would expect from the chain, including a rooftop dipping pool, a beautiful spa, and numerous restaurants (one has a Michelin star). All-white rooms are sleek, and some have balconies, but layouts can be a bit awkward. While the service is excellent, some guests complain about street noise and there is a pesky fee for Wi-Fi.

Majestic Hotel & Spa Barcelona

Majestic Hotel & Spa Barcelona Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The 276-room Majestic Hotel & Spa has a prime location, steps from designer shops and Gaudi monuments. All rooms were renovated in 2011, giving them a fresh, modern feel. Amenities include flat-screen TVs, stocked minibars, Nespresso machines, and interesting art. Spacious marble bathrooms have Bulgari toiletries, bathrobes, and rainfall showerheads. For more luxury, the 41 suites offer views over Passeig de Gracia; some have private terraces and 24-hour personalized service. Families might want to choose apartments that also include full kitchens. Other hotel highlights include a small rooftop pool and a rooftop terrace with an atmospheric bar and great city views; a contemporary on-site spa; and a fitness center. The restaurant serves a morning breakfast buffet and evening tapas; the bar offers live piano music; and the business center has free Internet.

Eurostars Grand Marina Hotel

Eurostars Grand Marina Hotel Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The Eurostars is one of the most identifiable hotels in Barcelona, with a transatlantic-shaped structure and a dramatic staircase in the lobby designed by celebrity architect Ieoh Ming Pei. The hotel embodies contemporary luxury, from the weekly opera nights, to the minimalist design, to the top-of-the-line amenities. Spacious rooms come with wonderful conveniences, such as a pillow menu, free Wi-Fi, comfortable beds, and in many, separate jetted tubs and walk-in showers. However, there are still a few lingering small flat-panel TVs in some suites. Property highlights include a small rooftop pool, a well-equipped fitness center, a restaurant with outdoor seating, and in-room massages. But there’s no full spa, and breakfast is pricey.

Casa Fuster Hotel

Casa Fuster Hotel Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The 105-room Casa Fuster is an upscale historic boutique near high-end shopping and Modernist architecture. The building itself is one of the most prominent examples of this style, with an elaborate façade and ornate marble interiors. Elegant rooms have pastel-colored walls, oversized headboards, and great amenities such as flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, Loewe toiletries, and surround sound systems. Some even have small in-room saunas, balconies and hydro-massage showers. But quarters can be tight, and king-size beds are really two smaller beds pushed together. Hotel features include a Mediterranean restaurant as well as a beautiful rooftop deck with a small pool and gorgeous panoramic views of Barcelona. Beautiful Café Vienes is a favorite among artists, intellectuals and locals, and its weekly jazz nights have performers such as Woody Allen and the New Orleans Rag Trio.

El Palace Hotel

El Palace Hotel Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The Palace oozes elegance and old-world charm. Housed in an early 20th-century building a few blocks from the Gothic Quarter, the hotel is popular among well-heeled families, couples, and business travelers. The property boasts a Michelin-starred restaurant, Caelis; car service to the airport and major attractions; and a small but modern fitness center. The exclusive spa features the only Temazcal sauna in Spain, Anne Semonin products, and traditional Maya treatments. Classic, elegant rooms have upholstered walls, plush beds, and modern bathrooms with separate showers and tubs. Some even have Roman bath-style tubs. Updated in-room amenities include flat-screen TVs, minibars, DVD players, and free Wi-Fi. But there are no coffeemakers in the rooms, and you should expect to pay a hefty price for breakfast.

Hotel Icaria Barcelona

Hotel Icaria Barcelona Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Icaria Hotel is a great value option in an up-and-coming section of Barcelona, near the beach and Olympic Park. The 180 modern and stylish rooms offer hardwood floors, flat-screen TVs, and large marble bathrooms. One highlight here is the outdoor rooftop pool with Jacuzzi and lounge chairs. Nightlife is also available, at the chic hotel cocktail bar called Vanity Room. Additional features include a big, sunny fitness center, free Wi-Fi, and free breakfast. While there are some complaints about traffic noise and the hotel isn't walking distance to big tourist attractions, electric scooters are available for rent inside the lobby for exploring Barcelona.

H10 Marina Barcelona Hotel

H10 Marina Barcelona Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 235-room chain hotel is located in a quiet area just outside the city center. Decent-sized rooms are clean and modern, with contemporary decor and up-to-date amenities such as flat-screen TVs and minibars. Hotel highlights include a lovely rooftop pool with city views and a bar, a nice spa with great treatments, and a Mediterranean restaurant with a solid wine list. The Privilege Level offers wonderful perks such as free access to the spa, a free bottle of wine at the restaurant, late check-out (if available), and upgraded in-room amenities. It’s a solid pick for business and leisure travelers, but mattresses are hard and walls are thin, so light sleepers might want to stay elsewhere.
