The Beloved Hotel

The Beloved Hotel Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The ultra-luxe Beloved, on a white-sand beach, features 109 suites with super sexy decor. They're all-white, with spacious, sleek marble bathrooms and Jacuzzi tubs, and have the vibe of a luxurious New York City hotel room -- except they're about four times the size and feature private balconies, many with ocean views. The expansive spa and fitness center are great, and the two pools with food and drink service are large and attractive (but many guests have complained that the pool water is much too cold). There are four restaurants, but most of them are not open all hours and service can be slow. The Beloved Hotel and Excellence Playa Mujeres have a very similar vibe and level of luxury, so travelers may want to compare prices before booking.

Excellence Playa Mujeres

Excellence Playa Mujeres Rating: 5.0 Pearls

This adults-only luxury resort offers a nice all-inclusive experience with tons of variety -- multiple dining options, several beautiful pools, a gorgeous spa, and dozens of wonderful activities. The rooms here are large and contemporary, with large modern bathrooms, Jacuzzis, and high-end amenities such as big flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and iPod docks. Some have a large rooftop terrace with a private plunge pool with ocean views. However, note that the beach is less attractive than others farther south, and that there are no attractions nearby. Still, though, compared with the nearby, comparably luxurious Beloved Hotel, the Excellence has more to offer in terms of options. It's also quieter, since it's adults-only, so couples looking for a romantic getaway might prefer this over the Beloved.

Hotel Villa Rolandi Thalasso SPA - Gourmet & Beach Club

Hotel Villa Rolandi Thalasso SPA - Gourmet & Beach Club Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The Hotel Villa Rolandi is a romantic, 35-room boutique that fully embraces the "less hectic than Cancun" vibe of Isla Mujeres. Two big draws are the secluded location on a pristine (albeit somewhat small) white-sand beach and the "no children under 13" policy. All rooms are spacious suites (the smallest starts at 498 square feet) that offer flat-screen TVs, large balconies with private Jacuzzis, and Italian marble floors. Great perks include a free continental breakfast delivered to rooms at no extra charge, and a 42-foot yacht that provides free transportation to and from Cancun. However, these luxe extras make for somewhat steep rates.

Le Blanc Spa Resort

Le Blanc Spa Resort Rating: 4.5 Pearls

There is nothing ordinary about the 260-room Le Blanc Spa Resort: Everything from the wine lists to your workout has been tailored to be top notch. It feels more South Beach chic than Cancun party, with a hip, gorgeous aesthetic throughout the entire pristine white property. The rooms are thoroughly modern and bright with minimalist decor and stunning ocean views (some with large Jacuzzi baths). But most of your time should be spent experiencing the top-of-the line spa, the chic restaurants (especially the stunningly designed Lumiere), and heavenly white-sand beach.

The Royal in Cancun

The Royal in Cancun Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The appearance of the 288-room adults-only Royal in Cancun goes against the often bad reputation all-inclusives have gained. Suites appear updated and buck traditional room layouts with a centrally located bed and spacious balcony (some are even swim-out). The bathrooms boast massive walk-in showers and Jacuzzi tubs with killer views. The quality of the food is surprisingly good and varied, including the convenient 24-hour VIP lounge. But like many all-inclusive properties, basic amenities can get crowded fast: Expect to fight for chairs by the pool or for dinner reservations at a decent hour. The vibe is also slightly older, so young couples or spring breakers may want to consider staying elsewhere. And families, of course, steer clear (no guests under the age of 16 are allowed).

The Westin Resort & Spa Cancun

The Westin Resort & Spa Cancun Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 379-room resort is located at the very end of the Hotel Zone, in a quiet spot far from the Cancun buzz. Its large, bright rooms come with the solid amenities (flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and coffeemakers), but have bare walls and feel somewhat dated. The beach is gorgeous, with white sand and turquoise waters, and is quieter and less crowded than other beaches in the area. The hotel also features four great pools, two lighted tennis courts, and several adequate (but unexceptional) restaurants. It is a great pick for families and those in need of some peace, but hard partiers might want to consider other hotels more centrally located in the Hotel Zone.

Paradisus Cancun All Inclusive

Paradisus Cancun All Inclusive Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Paradisus is an all-inclusive Cancun megaresort with 678 clean and updated rooms. Decor is bright and contemporary, though the gray marble floors can get slippery when wet. Quality of the balconies is inconsistent -- some are spacious with great ocean views, while others have obstructed views or little privacy. The pool area is well-designed and massive enough to handle big crowds. The remarkably clean beach is a big plus, as are the impressive spa and large fitness center. While this resort has great amenities such as a 9-hole golf course and plenty of water sports, there is a fee for Wi-Fi and the sprawling property can get crowded.

The Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort

The Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort is located along the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. With a lovely beach, attractive facade, and well-groomed property, this resort offers quality in the heart of Cancun's Hotel Zone. Rooms are either studios or villas, and both are complete with living areas, kitchens, washer/dryers, and balconies. Hints of traditional Mexican decor give the comfortable rooms -- furnished in rich brown and gold tones -- a bit of authentic flavor. Bathrooms are especially chic with tiled patterns along the walls. There are on-site restaurants serving international cuisine and the Tierra Market provides ingredients for guests to cook in fully equipped kitchens.

Omni Cancun Hotel & Villas

Omni Cancun Hotel & Villas Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 343-room all-inclusive hotel is situated in a pyramid-style building along the Nichupte Lagoon's expansive beach -- just a 15-minute drive from Cancun Airport. Although the hotel has undergone renovations, certain aspects are not up to par for the level of quality guests might expect. Rooms offer nothing special as far as decor (just your basic Mexican design with tile flooring), but redeeming amenities include balconies, purified tap water, minibars, coffeemakers, flat-screen TVs, and iPod docks. As for dining, the all-inclusive property has too few restaurants and bars for the size -- though DaVinci's is a hit. Overall, it's a comfortable family-friendly option, and grounds include tropical gardens surrounding three pools, and the mega-Jacuzzi with seating for up to 35 guests. In addition, there are tennis/basketball courts, meeting rooms, a fitness center, and spa, but watch out for the pushy time-share presenters in the lobby.

Villa Del Palmar Cancun

Villa Del Palmar Cancun Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Villa Del Palmar is a family-friendly resort set in one of the calmer locations of Cancun. Rooms are charming, with homey decor, and feature modern amenities such as iPod docks and flat-screen TVs. All units sport kitchenettes (full kitchens in suites) and large bathrooms with marble showers. The outdoor pool area helps make up for the slightly seaweed-y beach, sporting a waterfall bridge and tiki bar. The resort completed a massive renovation in 2012.
