Harbour View Inn

Harbour View Inn Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Harbour View Inn is a historic landmark, and the only waterfront hotel downtown. Original structural elements such as brick walls have been preserved, and the rooms have southern style (four-poster beds and white quilted coverlets). A gorgeous rooftop offers some of the city's best harbor views, and tons of shops, restaurants, and bars are within walking distance. Free extras such as breakfast, Wi-Fi, weekly skyline tours, and treats throughout the day add value, but the hotel lacks a fitness center, pool, and restaurant.
Elliott House Inn

Elliott House Inn Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This quaint, 25-room bed-and-breakfast, housed within a Civil War-era private residence, has an excellent location within the Historic District and competitive rates. Rooms are decorated in traditional style (white quilts, four-poster beds, wood floors), and the property features a large Jacuzzi underneath a shady pergola as well as free breakfast and Wi-Fi. Some rooms are on the small side, however, and amenities are few: The hotel lacks a fitness center, business center, and full restaurant.
Embassy Suites Charleston - Historic Charleston

Embassy Suites Charleston - Historic Charleston Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Across the street from Marion Square, the upper-middle-range Embassy Suites Charleston is housed in the original Citadel Military College that looks like an aged fortress. The lobby, with an oddly placed array of plants, oriental rugs, and chairs, isn't as inviting as some other Charleston hotels, but the Historic Downtown location and the large suites -- complete with separate living rooms, wet bars, mini-fridges, and microwaves -- are the highlight.
Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Mt Pleasant-Charleston

Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Mt Pleasant-Charleston Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The 116-room Holiday Inn Express & Suites Mount Pleasant-Charleston is in many ways a typical mid-range chain hotel, albeit one with extensive amenities, including an outdoor pool, a small fitness center, free breakfast, and snacks throughout the day. Though the rooms are generic, they feature contemporary decor, comfy beds, and flat-screen TVs. They're also extremely eco-friendly, with low-flow showerheads, faucets and toilets. On the downside, the hotel is a drive away from most of Charleston's tourist attractions.
SpringHill Suites Charleston Downtown/Riverview

SpringHill Suites Charleston Downtown/Riverview Rating: 3.0 Pearls

SpringHill Suites Charleston Downtown is a basic mid-range Marriott hotel. The place is popular with families, since all of the rooms are suites with kitchenettes. There's a decent-size outdoor pool here, and a fun giant checkerboard, but that's about it. It's tucked away a bit, about a mile and a half from Charleston's bustling Historic District, so guests will need a car to get to anything. This hotel is a good option for anyone looking to avoid the higher rates of historic Charleston, but it's a chain in a city known for its authentic southern hospitality and stately charm.
Residence Inn Charleston Downtown/Riverview

Residence Inn Charleston Downtown/Riverview Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The mid-range Residence Inn is located on the west bank of Ashley River, a 10-minute drive from Charleston’s Historic District. It has the standard amenities of a chain hotel of its category -- a smallish but modern fitness center, a heated saltwater pool, and generic decor with some colorful touches. But the spacious studios and suites, all with full kitchens and pull-out sofas, and the great freebies (hot breakfast, parking, Wi-Fi, evening shuttle to historic downtown) make this property a great value pick for those whose priority isn't being within walking distance to the attractions.
King Charles Inn

King Charles Inn Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This 91-room Best Western property, located on busy Meeting Street, delivers more amenities than the average downtown Charleston inn, including a pool, a lounge, and free parking. The decor in the common spaces isn't as charming as at some competing properties, such as the Elliott House Inn, but rooms have sleek (if generic) southern style -- poster beds, quilts, and dark wood furniture. The location is steps from the Historic District's best shops, restaurants, and attractions.
