Allegro Chicago Hotel

Allegro Chicago Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 438-room Kimpton hotel is located in the heart of the Theatre District, and surrounded by the corporate offices of the Loop. Features are few (there isn't much besides the 24-hour fitness center), but the decor is bright and modern, and freebies include a nightly wine hour and in-room yoga accessories. Though some rooms are on the small side, all have modern amenities: 37-inch flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, Aveda toiletries and mini-bars. For bigger rooms and bathrooms (but fewer freebies), consider the nearby Fairmont.

Hotel Monaco Chicago

Hotel Monaco Chicago Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 192-room Kimpton is located inside a former hat factory in the Loop, and its stylish decor is a mix of Art Deco elegance and bright, quirky boutique flair. Solid freebies, including evening wine and beer hour with entertainment plus morning coffee and tea, help to create an intimate experience. All in all, it's one of the city's best boutiques, even with expensive valet parking and unexceptional bathrooms.

Burnham a Kimpton Hotel

Burnham a Kimpton Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 122-room boutique located in an 1895 building pays homage to its past with cool historic details, including wrought iron, mosaic tiles, and marble stairs. But as in many old buildings, the rooms are teeny tiny, starting at just 175 square feet. At least they come with 37-inch flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, CO Bigelow toiletries, and bold, but stately, decor. Freebies like nightly wine tastings and morning coffee also help compensate, but you can probably find bigger rooms for the price.

Villa D' Citta

Villa D' Citta Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The six-room Villa D’ Citta is a cozy, romantic bed-and-breakfast located in residential Lincoln Park. Its few features are all charming: an outdoor whirlpool and sun deck, a brick courtyard with a barbecue, and a large communal kitchen. The bright, luxurious rooms have big flat-screen TVs and hardwood floors, but they lack iPod docks and safes, and two of them share a bathroom.

Dana Hotel and Spa

Dana Hotel and Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 216-room hotel is an urban retreat with zen decor, a spa, a stylish restaurant, and popular lounge, located three blocks from the Magnificent Mile. The hotel's serene vibe continues into the luxurious rooms, which feature hardwood floors, large, spa-inspired showers, plush beds, and floor-to-ceiling windows or balconies. It's one of Chicago's most luxurious boutiques.

Hotel Palomar Chicago

Hotel Palomar Chicago Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 261-room Hotel Palomar is one of the best Kimpton hotels in the city, and the only one in River North, near the Magnificent Mile. Its lovely indoor pool with a sundeck and its free nightly wine hour are both highlights, and the big, stylish rooms are equipped with iPod docks, 37-inch flat-screen TVs, and Etro bath toiletries. All in all, it's a great pick for the price.

The Sutton Place Hotel Chicago

The Sutton Place Hotel Chicago Rating: 3.5 Pearls

HOTEL IS CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS. IT WILL REOPENT IN AUGUST 2013 AS A THOMPSON HOTEL. This 246-room boutique two blocks from the Magnificent Mile has upscale services like free morning newspapers, 24-hour room service, morning car service, and twice-daily maid service. But the contemporary rooms -- although clean and big -- could use an upgrade (most still have tube TVs). The location is great, but you can often do better for the price.

Best Western Hawthorne Terrace

Best Western Hawthorne Terrace Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The 83-room Best Western Hawthorne Terrace is one of the few hotels in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood, a northern residential area that's home to Wrigley Field and Chicago's gay nightlife scene. It's got more charm than you'd expect from a chain hotel -- a brick building covered with ivy, a Victorian-style lobby with a fireplace, contemporary rooms renovated in 2010 -- as well as solid freebies, including Wi-Fi, continental breakfasts and morning newspaper delivery. But it's far from the tourist sights, and lacks a full restaurant, room service, and a business center.

City Suites Hotel

City Suites Hotel Rating: 2.5 Pearls

This 45-room hotel is located in lively Boystown, close to shops, restaurants and bars, and right next to the subway. (Some rooms get noise from the elevated train tracks.) Standard rooms are small, the decor is bland, and the hotel has zero features (no restaurant, no business center, and no fitness center). But 42-inch flat-screen TVs in every room, spacious suites with microwaves and mini-fridges, free Wi-Fi and a free continental breakfast make it a fine choice for the price. If you'd rather be closer to the tourist action, consider the slightly more expensive Millennium Knickerbocker.

The Willows Hotel

The Willows Hotel Rating: 2.5 Pearls

The 55-room Willows Hotel is a solid value pick in a historic building on the northern edge of Lincoln Park. It's far from Chicago's main tourist sites, but there are plenty of restaurants, shops and bars half a block from the hotel. The property lacks features like a restaurant, business center, or on-site fitness center, but offers guests some nice freebies, including coffee and tea, continental breakfast, access to a local gym, and Wi-Fi. Some rooms are tiny (especially the 121-square-foot Small Queen Room), but they all come with 42-inch flat-screen TVs, bathrobes and minibars.
