Doubletree Chicago Magnificent Mile

Doubletree Chicago Magnificent Mile Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This 500-room chain hotel two blocks from the Magnificent Mile is nicer than your average Doubletree, but still solidly mid-range. Rooms were renovated in 2009 and all come with 27-inch flat-screen TVs, Neutrogena toiletries, MP3 hookups and coffeemakers with free coffee and tea. It's a pretty good value for what you get, but it's worth comparing rates with the more charming Millennium Knickerbocker.

River Hotel

River Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The midrange, 243-room River Hotel shares a building (and small, stately lobby) with the members-only Club Quarters hotel. Rooms are on the small side, but they're clean and modern, and some come with kitchenettes. The hotel is, as you might have guessed, right on the Chicago River on the northern edge of the Loop; rates are among the most affordable you'll find in this tourist-centric location.

Central Loop Hotel

Central Loop Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This midrange hotel, which shares a building with the members-only Club Quarters Central Loop Hotel, is a solid value in the center of The Loop, within walking distance of many tourist attractions. Rooms are small and a little generic, but modern, with flat-screen TVs and comfy beds (some come with kitchenettes). Nice freebies (coffee, newspapers, Wi-Fi) and the lively on-site gastropub are highlights, but don't expect too much in the way of service; with an electronic check-in and concierge services shared by both hotels, the hotel can give off a "do-it-yourself" attitude.

The Sutton Place Hotel Chicago

The Sutton Place Hotel Chicago Rating: 3.5 Pearls

HOTEL IS CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS. IT WILL REOPENT IN AUGUST 2013 AS A THOMPSON HOTEL. This 246-room boutique two blocks from the Magnificent Mile has upscale services like free morning newspapers, 24-hour room service, morning car service, and twice-daily maid service. But the contemporary rooms -- although clean and big -- could use an upgrade (most still have tube TVs). The location is great, but you can often do better for the price.

Chicago South Loop Hotel

Chicago South Loop Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This 232-room hotel is far from Chicago's tourist sites, so there's no reason to stay here unless you're attending a conference at the nearby McCormick Convention Center. Business travelers will appreciate the 24-hour business center, 24-hour fitness center, free parking and free Wi-Fi, but not the sparse, cheap rooms and desolate location. Consider paying a little more for the nearby Hilton Chicago, or if you can't budge on price, the Congress Plaza.

Essex Inn

Essex Inn Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This 254-room Essex Inn is a decent value pick across the street from Grant Park, near the Museum Campus. Some of the bright, comfortable (if chain-like) rooms have great views of the lake, and the huge indoor pool and state-of-the-art fitness center are both pluses. It's true that leisure travelers can usually find comparable hotels farther north for similar rates, but the free Michigan Avenue shuttle to popular sites helps compensate for the South Loop location.

Hampton Inn & Suites Chicago - Downtown

Hampton Inn & Suites Chicago - Downtown Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This 230-room mid-range hotel is a solid value near the Magnificent Mile. Highlights include the clean, comfortable rooms with flat-screen TVs, the beautiful indoor pool with a skylight, and quality freebies, including free hot breakfasts and free Wi-Fi. But there's a fire station across the street and you can hear the sirens day and night.

Best Western Hawthorne Terrace

Best Western Hawthorne Terrace Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The 83-room Best Western Hawthorne Terrace is one of the few hotels in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood, a northern residential area that's home to Wrigley Field and Chicago's gay nightlife scene. It's got more charm than you'd expect from a chain hotel -- a brick building covered with ivy, a Victorian-style lobby with a fireplace, contemporary rooms renovated in 2010 -- as well as solid freebies, including Wi-Fi, continental breakfasts and morning newspaper delivery. But it's far from the tourist sights, and lacks a full restaurant, room service, and a business center.

Hilton Garden Inn Chicago Downtown/Magnificent Mile

Hilton Garden Inn Chicago Downtown/Magnificent Mile Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This 357-room hotel two blocks from the Magnificent Mile has big (if generic) rooms for the price, plus an attractive (albeit small) indoor pool area and a bright, well-equipped fitness center. Mini-fridges and microwaves make it easy to save money on food, and the hotel offers solid freebies — free Wi-Fi and free afternoon cookies. But parking fees are steep, and room service is only available for dinner.

Best Western Plus River North Hotel

Best Western Plus River North Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The Best Western River North is a mid-range hotel for the budget-conscious business traveler in the center of Chicago's trendy River North neighborhood. It's on a touristy block surrounded by high-rise loft condos and theme restaurants. The rooms are clean, but 2011 renovations are already wearing thin, and the hotel needs an overall update. The hotel provides amenities to business travelers, with ergonomic work chairs (and free Wi-Fi), but lacks the on-site breakfast comparable hotels offer. Low rates and free parking, a rarity in Chicago, make this a good choice for travelers who want to stay near the Magnificent Mile, but the worn carpets and overpowering scent of cleaning products in the hallways might turn away others. The nearby Hampton Inn & Suites trades free parking for a less appealing free breakfast but significantly more updated decor.
