Kiawah Island Golf Resort

Kiawah Island Golf Resort Rating: 5.0 Pearls

Located just south of Charleston, South Carolina the Kiawah Island Golf Resort is an eco-friendly luxury resort along 10 miles of pristine beach. There are five championship golf courses, pools with water slides, and an on-site nature center (with birds, snakes, and alligators) within this resort, occupying most of the 10,000 acres of the island. Rooms range from one bedroom options to whole house rentals. The property is packed with features -- a spa, bike rentals, fitness center, markets, restaurants -- but some guests complain about expensive food and a crowded feel during peak season.

The Inn at Palmetto Bluff

The Inn at Palmetto Bluff Rating: 5.0 Pearls

This "inn" in Carolina Lowcountry, really more akin to a sprawling estate, provides a one-of-a-kind experience that uniquely blends southern history and almost otherworldly natural beauty: rivers, misty marshes, old oaks draped with wispy Spanish moss, and salty breezes. The main hotel building looks like a classic southern mansion, and the 50 Cottages and Cottage Suites are simultaneously homey and utterly luxurious, with working fireplaces, screen porches, and gorgeous bathrooms. The multi-bedroom Village Homes are also luxurious, but lack some of the nuances of the cottages. Guests can enjoy a range of recreational facilities, including golf, bicycling, tennis, croquet, kayaking, and swimming (in the two pools), and the luxury spa is highly acclaimed. It's not an overstatement to say that the Inn at Palmetto Bluff is one of the most special properties in the entire country.

Marina Inn at Grande Dunes

Marina Inn at Grande Dunes Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 200-room hotel is tucked away in a tranquil spot of the 2,200-acre Grande Dunes Resort. The adjacent marina can be viewed from some guest rooms, all of which have private terraces. Rooms are large, but cheesy touches like shell-shaped lamps make the decor seem dated. This upscale property features several stylish dining spots, a free-form pool complex with Jacuzzis, and a small, 24-hour fitness center with indoor pool. Free shuttle service is provided to a beach club, but those who want to lounge on the sand all day might want to consider hotels closer to the ocean.

Sheraton Myrtle Beach Convention Center Hotel

Sheraton Myrtle Beach Convention Center Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 400-room Sheraton is located in Downtown Myrtle Beach, attached to the convention center and close to the airport and great shopping. The rooms are comfortable, especially by Myrtle Beach standards, with high-quality bedding and microwaves (if generic decor). The large fitness center has modern machines and a yoga/Pilates area, but the tiny pool is sub-par and it is not always clean. This property caters mostly to business travelers, but it does draw some families due to its proximity to kid-friendly attractions like Broadway at the Beach. The actual beach, however, is a 10-minute walk away.

Myrtle Beach Marriott Resort & Spa at Grande Dunes

Myrtle Beach Marriott Resort & Spa at Grande Dunes Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 405-room Marriott resort is one of the few four-pearl properties in Myrtle Beach, and it's a good deal more elegant than the typical run-down chains you'll find in the area. With two lovely outdoor pools as well as an indoor one, a nice spa, two solid restaurants, and direct access to a wonderful beach, this property is a solid pick. Rooms have somewhat generic decor, but are comfy and spacious, and have large windows, most with at least partial ocean views. Plus, there's plenty to keep kids entertained, including a fun waterslide, a basketball court, a ping pong table, and a kids' club with lots of activities.

Sonesta Resort Hilton Head Island

Sonesta Resort Hilton Head Island Rating: 4.0 Pearls

An extensive renovation completed in 2013 has added a swank, modern feel to this Sonesta Resort. The upscale property has plenty to offer, including several restaurants and an on-site spa, as well as children’s activities. The lovely heated pools are a highlight, as are the gorgeous grounds. But those guests looking forward to a beach vacation should note that this hotel is not right on the water, and beach chairs and umbrellas have to be rented for an extra fee.

Omni Hilton Head Oceanfront Resort

Omni Hilton Head Oceanfront Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This upscale resort has plenty of amenities, including several pools and a pretty private beach. However, many rooms are somewhat dated for a four-pearl property. The hotel is undergoing renovations that are expected to be finished in the spring of 2015. Until then, travelers might want to compare rates with the Sonesta Resort, which has more of a modern feel.

North Beach Plantation

North Beach Plantation Rating: 4.0 Pearls

North Beach Plantation is one of the few upscale properties in Myrtle Beach -- and it's arguably the best of the bunch. Configured as condos and townhouses, accommodations are impeccably neat and clean. Sizes range from one-bedroom condos to five-bedroom cottages, making this a convenient pick for groups of any size. A high-end spa, a famous Myrtle Beach restaurant, a beachfront location and multiple options for pools means there is plenty to do on the property. Just note that it's a 25-minute drive to the boardwalk; those who prefer a more central location may want to consider the Anderson Ocean Club & Spa.

The Inn at Harbour Town

The Inn at Harbour Town Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Inn at Harbour Town is a 60-room boutique with a long list of amenities, including three golf courses, several tennis courts, a nearby beach, nice pool, and shopping. The resort overlooks Harbour Town Golf Links, home of the PGA Tour's RBC Heritage. Rooms are modern and upscale with plush bedding, flat-screen TVs, and iPod docks. Bathrooms are the outstanding feature, with walk-in showers, separate soaking tubs, and Molton Brown toiletries. The inn has a prime location for golfing, sea kayaking, shopping, and dining, but the property does lack a spa.

The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa

The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

After extensive renovations completed in 2013, the Westin Hilton Head offers an ultra-luxurious, spa-like feel. This upscale resort features beautiful grounds with lots of places to lounge throughout, as well as airy interiors with chic furnishings. However, the long hallways at this 416-room property make for a bit of a hike to some rooms. Guests who prefer a shorter walk should request rooms by the elevators. The nearby Sonesta and Omni usually have cheaper rates, but the ocean view rooms are a bit nicer and the setting is a bit more posh at the Westin.
