Nayara Springs

Nayara Springs Rating: 5.0 Pearls

Luxurious in every way, the 16-room, adult-only resort Nayara Springs is the top resort in the area for couples seeking romance and privacy -- but who can do without volcano views. Large, rustic-luxe rooms have a bevy of free amenities (free minibar items, free international calls) and gadgets (Bluetooth music players, espresso machines), all of which you pay for in the room rate. Its nearest competitor is the Nayara Hotel, Spa & Gardens, which happens to be its family-friendly sister property next door (volcano views are on offer there). The hotel is only a 15-minute ride into the town of La Fortuna, but most guests seem to spend the majority of their time on the property.
Gaia Hotel And Reserve

Gaia Hotel And Reserve Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Guests will feel truly pampered at this adults-only, 29-room luxury hotel. Tucked into the hillside of a 14-acre nature reserve, Gaia feels appropriately exclusive and private, and has the attentive, personalized service to match. Rooms are spacious and airy; the great views are never-ending; and the freebies abound: breakfast, Wi-Fi, a mini spa treatment (to name a few). Keep your eyes peeled for iguanas, sloths, and the like.
Nayara Hotel, Spa & Gardens

Nayara Hotel, Spa & Gardens Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The beautiful Arenal Nayara's 44 individual bungalows, restaurant, wine bar, and spa are all tucked into incredibly lush grounds. Some of the amenities are small (pool, spa, fitness center), but guests come here for the private bungalows with special touches like an outdoor garden shower and a deck with a hot tub and hammock. It's more luxurious than nearby Arenal Kioro, but Kioro's rooms have better volcano views. Couples may also want to consider the adult-only sister property next door, Nayara Springs.
Lapa Rios Ecolodge & Wildlife Reserve

Lapa Rios Ecolodge & Wildlife Reserve Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Lapa Rios, located in the remote coastal rainforests of the Osa Peninsula, is Costa Rica’s original luxury eco lodge. This is the opposite of a Cancun-style beach resort -- guests come to the upscale Lapa Rios to enjoy the spectacular surroundings, learn about sustainable tourism, and re-connect with nature. The 16-bungalow lodge sits amid 1,000 acres of rainforest filled with wildlife, but it's far from a no-frills jungle camp. There are many comforts here, including a pool overlooking the ocean, a splendid restaurant serving sumptuous cuisine, and rustic-luxe rooms with private decks. This is a place to get in touch with nature without roughing it.
Le Cameleon Boutique Hotel

Le Cameleon Boutique Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Expect to get a bang for your buck at the upscale Le Cameleon Boutique Hotel. The Puerto Viejo getaway locale is an ideal option for those who want to mix luxe living with the beauty of nature. It's more Ibiza than San Jose, there's nothing rustic about this property. Think: chic, modern rooms with snow white walls, beddings, and furniture. Bright accessories in the rooms and staff uniforms change color daily like the skin of a chameleon, hence the name of the hotel. There's a sophisticated outdoor pool, but the fancy beach club and sand are more popular spots to sun. A spa, hot tub, and gourmet restaurant round out the romantic offerings. It's a bit far from the center of Puerto Viejo but close to the Parada Jaguar Rescue Center and Manzanillo Wildlife Reserve. To be closer to the action of Puerto Viejo at lower rates, try the Lizard King Hotel, but lose the chic ambience found at Le Cameleon.
Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas

Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A serene, wellness-focused 31-room boutique retreat on the outskirts of bustling Tamarindo, Cala Luna has an organic, beachy ambience. A large pool, lounge, and restaurant serve as the hotel's social center while an intimate spa and yoga pavilion are tucked away in the jungle-like surroundings. Couples hide out in upscale, bungalow-style rooms with vaulted ceilings and spacious baths while families prefer the two- and three-bedroom villas with private pools. The hotel’s wellness focus is emphasized by daily yoga classes and a restaurant that uses organic and sustainable food sources, some from the on-site garden. While not located on the ocean, a five-minute walk along a landscaped path leads guests to a secluded beach, although it is rocky and not suitable for swimming, especially at low tide.
Arenal Kioro Suites and Spa

Arenal Kioro Suites and Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Arenal Kioro Suites and Spa takes full advantage of its natural setting: The rooms, restaurants, and pool all offer stunning views of Arenal Volcano. Big suites all come with large Jacuzzis and two terraces, but the tube TVs and floral bedding make them feel slightly less luxe than those at the nearby Arenal Nayara.
Issimo Suites Boutique Hotel and Spa

Issimo Suites Boutique Hotel and Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Issimo Suites Boutique Hotel and Spa is a small, upscale property that's a strong contender for most romantic in Manuel Antonio. All of the rooms are suites and include jetted tubs, ocean views, and minibars. Issimos Restaurant serves a free, luxe breakfast buffet and Italian favorites for lunch and dinner, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The pool is on the small side, but it's open 24 hours and there's an adjacent bar for sunset cocktails. Kids under the age of 16 aren't allowed. Families should check out neighboring Shana Hotel for a larger pool and family-friendly atmosphere.
Royal Corin Resort & Loto Spa

Royal Corin Resort & Loto Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

For a small hotel, this 54-room boutique has a lot to offer: A beautiful hot springs pool complex with natural thermal waters, great views of Arenal volcano, a lovely spa, a bar with an outdoor terrace, and an on-site restaurant. Contemporary rooms all have volcano views, but the property feels more developed, and less lush, than others in the area. Those wanting to feel surrounded by nature might want to stay elsewhere.
Makanda by the Sea

Makanda by the Sea Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Makanda by the Sea is an upscale and romantic boutique hotel nestled into the hills of Manuel Antonio. Many of the 12 Villas and Studios are currently under construction, so there's a fair bit of noise and some of them haven't been updated yet. Villa 12 is the newest and most luxurious unit, with a private infinity-edge pool, two bedrooms, and a modern kitchen. All of the rooms have ocean views and come with a free daily delivered breakfast. The communal pool and adjacent Sunspot restaurant get high marks from past guests -- but there are complaints about the uncomfortable hike to a small private beach. Kids under the age of 16 aren't allowed, so families should check out nearby Shana Hotel.
