Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo

Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo Rating: 5.0 Pearls

Easily among the most luxurious resorts in Central America, The Four Seasons is as close to perfection as it gets. With two beautiful beaches, ocean views from each one of the sumptuous rooms -- decorated in materials including wood, bamboo, and stone -- and an 18-hole golf course, the resort makes it possible for guests to spend their whole vacation on-site. Those who do choose to explore beyond Peninsula Papagayo should note that the roads in Guanacaste are in poor condition.
JW Marriott Guanacaste Resort & Spa

JW Marriott Guanacaste Resort & Spa Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The JW Marriott is one of the top luxury properties in Guanacaste, with beautiful, hacienda-style architecture (think: lots of wood and stone, romantic white hammocks, wrought iron light fixtures and indigenous art). The stunning free-form pool is the largest in Central America, and the tranquil spa is world-class. The only main downside is the extremely rough, hour-long drive from Liberia Airport.
Los Suenos Marriott Ocean & Golf Resort

Los Suenos Marriott Ocean & Golf Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Marriott Los Suenos is one of Costa Rica's few large-scale resorts, with 201 comfortable rooms, an 18-hole golf course, a big pool complex, full-service spa, six restaurants, and beautiful Spanish colonial architecture. But the on-site beach is extremely rocky, so you may want to take a taxi to one of the other nearby beaches instead.
Hilton Papagayo Costa Rica Resort & Spa

Hilton Papagayo Costa Rica Resort & Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 202-room Hilton Papagayo is an excellent upscale all-inclusive option in Guanacaste, with a decent beach and comfortable (if generic) rooms. It's quieter and classier than your typical all-inclusive, with brand-name liquor, no annoying bracelets, solid (it not exceptional) food, and live music or karaoke rather than embarrassing staff performances. But you'll need to take one of the free hotel shuttles to get around the sprawling property.
Hotel Punta Islita

Hotel Punta Islita Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This ultra-remote, rustic luxe hideaway is worth the bumpy, two-and-a-half hour drive from Liberia Airport. The rooms aren't as impressive as those at larger luxury resorts in the region, but the unparalleled views, stunning infinity pool, and ruggedly beautiful (if rocky) beach more than compensate. Plus, this is a hotel with a heart: Punta Islita is environmentally friendly, and gives back to the local community.
Tamarindo Diria Beach & Golf Resort

Tamarindo Diria Beach & Golf Resort Rating: 3.5 Pearls

For an affordable mid-range hotel right on Tamarindo Beach, this 183-room property is a solid bet (particularly for the young and party-minded). The central location is within easy walking distance of shops and restaurants, and rooms are comfortable, if not luxurious. But the hotel is split in half -- one side is near the beach, and one is across the street, where the larger pool is located -- which some may find inconvenient.
Asclepios Wellness & Healing Retreat

Asclepios Wellness & Healing Retreat Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The upper-middle-range Asclepios bills itself as a wellness center rather than a hotel, though it successfully incorporates elements of both. Located in the hills near the Central Valley town of Alajuela, it’s conveniently close to the airport but worlds away from the hustle and bustle of downtown San Jose. A full spa, fitness center, outdoor pool, and organic restaurant all lie on spacious grounds amidst a lush landscape. Every one of its 12 comfortable and stylish rooms has a different theme, and all overlook hillsides planted with coffee and sugarcane. Guests looking for a spa retreat on comfortable grounds will find it here -- but there's not much else around the property.
Occidental Grand Papagayo

Occidental Grand Papagayo Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This 169-room all-inclusive beach resort offers plenty of bang for the buck, with a big pool, outdoor massage huts, a poolside lunch buffet, multiple bars and upscale restaurants, and a slice of Costa Rican sand. The adults-only resort is geared toward couples looking for a quiet, romantic stay.
Hotel Riu Guanacaste

Hotel Riu Guanacaste Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 701-room Riu Guanacaste is a lot like a Riu anywhere, with a good beach, a huge, raucous pool, an energetic entertainment staff, and a party-hearty, booze-fueled atmosphere. Rooms are nothing special, and a la carte restaurant reservations need to be made a day in advance. If you're after a convenient, typical all-inclusive experience, this is it; if you're looking to experience local charm, not so much.
