Marriott Kauai Resort And Beach Club

Marriott Kauai Resort And Beach Club Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Renovated in 2009, this 356-room, family-oriented resort on Kalapaki Beach boasts big flat-screens in every room, a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, and the biggest single-level pool in Hawaii. It might not have the fancy frills of the pricier Grand Hyatt, but it's still the best resort for the buck in Kauai.

Hilton Grand Vacations Club at Waikoloa Beach Resort

Hilton Grand Vacations Club at Waikoloa Beach Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Hilton Grand Vacations Club offers an affordable two-bedroom option within the Waikoloa Beach Resort. The living room, dining, and kitchen areas are well-equipped for multiple guests and longer stays, much like other condos in the area, but access to the Waikoloa Hilton allows guests to enjoy resort-like perks close by. The lobby area and main pool are beautifully designed, though both can easily become crowded (along with other facilities) due to high traffic and small space. Some areas are a bit dated, but overall it's a great value for the price and for those looking for a more at-home-type extended stay.

Hotel Renew by Aston

Hotel Renew by Aston Rating: 3.5 Pearls

A top pick for those who want more than a budget hotel but less than a mega resort, this affordable, 72-room boutique a block from the beach is high on style, but short on amenities.

Kauai Beach Resort

Kauai Beach Resort Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This private, quiet property has large rooms, gorgeous sunrises over a rugged beach, a waterslide and sand-bottom pool, and a romantic bar with live music. It's a good choice for a quiet, relaxed stay. Just know that for similar rates, the Kauai Marriott has better service, better food, high-design pools, a more usable beach, and more stuff to do.

Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel

Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This 645-room hotel looks and feels like a shopping mall, with chain restaurants on the ground floor, an escalator to the lobby, and service that seems to emphasize speed over personal touches. But the beachfront location is great, and recently renovated rooms feature fun décor and flat-screen TVs. Plus, most have ocean views.

Luana Waikiki

Luana Waikiki Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Part of the Aqua Resorts chain, the 217-room Luana Waikiki is a low-key condo hotel located a few minutes' walk from the center of Waikiki. The property borders Fort DeRussy Beach Park, which has one of the finest white sand beaches on the south side of Oahu. Because it’s not right in the city center, the Luana Waikiki offers the best of both worlds: peace and accessibility. Nightlife fans who want easy access to dancing and vacationers who want to relax on the sand will both be happy.

Outrigger Fairway Villas

Outrigger Fairway Villas Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This clean, affordable condo property in Waikoloa Village on the Kohala Coast offers an uncommon level of privacy: It's located inside a gated community and surrounded by a golf course. Ranch-inspired buildings house multi-room units, complete with full kitchens and washer/dryers, and property features include an attractive (if small) infinity pool and an open-air fitness room. But the living rooms and kitchens are a bit smaller than you'll find at competing condo properties, the decor varies by unit, and the beach is a half mile away.

Shoreline Hotel Waikiki, a Joie de Vivre Hotel

Shoreline Hotel Waikiki, a Joie de Vivre Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 125-room Shoreline Hotel Waikiki, a Joie de Vivre Hotel is an upper-mid-range property located two blocks away from Kalakaua Avenue and less than a five-minute walk from Waikiki Beach. With retro furniture and bright, colorful artwork the hotel has a cute, 70s-inspired look and feel. There aren’t a lot of extras (a small rooftop pool and bright lobby with free coffee), but the hotel does provide an excellent location for an affordable price. There’s another Joie de Vivre Hotel not too far away, Coconut Waikiki, which is less expensive but farther from the beach.

Waikiki Parc Hotel

Waikiki Parc Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

With a branch of Nobu in the lobby, a beach across the street, and signing privileges at its adjacent high-end sister Halekulani, this well-priced boutique hotel appeals to foodies and families. The fairly simple rooms have high-def, flat-panel TVs (some have spectacular views) and the service is friendly, if far less doting, than at its sibling.

Ilikai Hotel & Suites, an Aqua Boutique

Ilikai Hotel & Suites, an Aqua Boutique Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This property, a 30-story high rise at the southern end of Waikiki, is a five-minute walk from the waterfront and offers a combination of hotel-managed suites and privately owned and rented condominiums. Because of the mixed ownership, there is less centralized regulation over construction happening in the building, which some guests have complained can be intermittently loud. It is popular with guests seeking longer stays, including families and large groups, because of the option to rent suites with kitchens. The property itself has seen better days since its cameo in the opening credits of "Hawaii Five-0", but guests have fairly consistently commented on the cleanliness of rooms, and the renovated rooms are sleek and modern.
