The Metropolitan

The Metropolitan Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The central, exclusive Metropolitan Hotel is located at the nexus of Hyde Park, Knightsbridge, and Mayfair. Known for the excellent Michelin-rated restaurant Nobu and nightlife hot spot Met Bar, this hotel is a chic, upscale option. Rooms are sunny and spacious with flat-screen TVs and iPod docks, and the contemporary lobby is home to a knowledgeable concierge service. The small, but well-equipped spa and fitness center along with free Wi-Fi are perks here, but rates are pricey and room amenities are limited for this price point.

ME London

ME London Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The 157-room ME London is a design hotel in a prime location right on The Strand. From the dark lobby to the chic, minimal rooms there is an artistic and exclusive atmosphere to the hotel. On-site restaurants, lounges, and bars -- including a trendy rooftop bar -- are destinations in their own right, attracting both locals and visitors. Tech-savvy rooms have cool and functional bedside lighting controls along with luxurious bathrooms, but some guests feel that the black hallways can be a little too dark and that this much style can come with a side of attitude.

St Martins Lane Hotel

St Martins Lane Hotel Rating: 4.5 Pearls

St. Martin's Lane is a prominent design hotel with sleek, cheeky interiors by Philippe Starck and a fashionable A-list bar scene. The high price tags and inconsistent service are downsides, but the central location neighboring Covent Garden is a plus, as is the hip atmosphere. Luxurious rooms have stylish white decor and adjustable mood lighting.

Sanctum Soho Hotel

Sanctum Soho Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This boutique hotel exudes a playful rock 'n' roll vibe, thanks to extravagant details such as diamante-studded door handles and electric guitar rentals. It isn't as classy as the Metropolitan, however, and rooms are starting to show a bit of wear and tear. Celebs such as Britney Spears have been spotted here, but the Sanctum Soho mainly attracts British reality TV stars and rock star wannabees who like to party all night (the rooftop bar and Jacuzzi are open 24 hours). Since rooms are not well insulated from noise, light sleepers may prefer a more tranquil hotel.

YHA London Central

YHA London Central Rating: 2.0 Pearls

This property has everything one might expect from a central London Hostel. Fun and friendly vibe -- check. Walking distance to center -- check. Cheap dorm-based accommodation -- check. Great self-catering facilities are a standout and the bar/café is a real social hub. Some of the bunk bed style rooms have en suite bathrooms. Poor Wi-Fi is a let down, however, and communal bathrooms can get busy in the morning. Rates are cheap for the location, and similar to the funkier Generator Hostel a little further out.

Generator Hostel London

Generator Hostel London Rating: 2.0 Pearls

The Generator Hostel represents a new type of high-end hostelling with a real emphasis on creating a fun, chilled-out atmosphere conducive to interaction between guests. It's a good choice for both young solo travelers and groups, offering dorms for up to 12 people and private rooms, though some are cramped. The cafe, bar, and cinema room are all great spaces to relax, and the hostel's event program is a nice touch. While it's not perfect, or the cheapest hostel in the capital, there are few with as good a central London location that promise such a snazzy vibe.
