Petit Ermitage

Petit Ermitage Rating: 4.0 Pearls

It's a matter of taste. The hotel's bohemianism -- think hipsters and distressed fixtures -- will appeal to some but not others. Oyster's take? We dig it, man. For half the price of some of its competitors, you get amodern, truly unique boutique with large suites (many with kitchens) and a lovely rooftop pool.

Hotel Angeleno

Hotel Angeleno Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Don't let the location inches from the 405 freeway scare you. The 209-room Hotel Angeleno, a 10-minute drive from UCLA and the Getty, is one of L.A.'s best values. Not much is within walking distance, but the rooms are immaculate, the pool is pleasant, the Wi-Fi is free, and the penthouse restaurant has panoramic views.

Maison 140 Beverly Hills

Maison 140 Beverly Hills Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This tiny, 43-room boutique makes up in style what it lacks in size and amenities. Granted there's no pool, real business center, or even a restaurant -- but the unique Chinoiserie and Parisian-inspired rooms, cozy lobby bar with nightly absinthe happy hours, and central Beverly Hills location lure in a loyal crowd. Guest rooms were completely renovated in May 2011 by Kelly Wearstler, as well as certain furnishings in the lobby.

The Standard Hollywood

The Standard Hollywood Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This 139-room hip boutique offers stylish lodgings and a prime Sunset Strip location for lower rates than the Mondrian (but with less luxurious rooms). You won't get this much (cool pool, cheap 24-hour restaurant, great nightlife) for this little elsewhere on the Strip. But there is no fitness center, spa, or business center on site. Guests, primarily singles or couples without children, don't seem to miss the extra amenities, focusing more on the boutique's party atmosphere and stylish offerings. Families, while welcome, may be better suited elsewhere.

Luxe Hotel Rodeo Drive

Luxe Hotel Rodeo Drive Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This 86-room Beverly Hills boutique may lack an on-site fitness center, spa, or pool, but its low rates for such a prime Rodeo Drive location, rooms with luxury Egyptian cotton bedding and free Wi-Fi, plus free daily passes to the nearby Sports Club/LA make it a great value in a glitzy neighborhood.

BEST WESTERN PLUS San Pedro Hotel & Suites

BEST WESTERN PLUS San Pedro Hotel & Suites Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This 60-room mid-range hotel is convenient for travelers who are looking to be close to the Port of Los Angeles cruise port, Long Beach Convention and Events Center, or the sand of Mother's Beach, and it offers particularly lovely rooms for a Best Western PLUS. The hotel offers free shuttle service to the cruise port and deals on parking. The business center has free Internet, two computers with printing, and meeting space. But the hotel is not in a picturesque area (the surroundings include a doughnut shop and gas station). Guests who don't need proximity to the port, the convention center, or the beach might prefer a hotel closer to the center of town, although the sheer size of these rooms is hard to beat here.

Hotel Erwin

Hotel Erwin Rating: 3.0 Pearls

An eccentric 119-room hotel for budget-conscious travelers that's an easy walk to Venice Beach and plays off the area's hippie-centric history. It doesn't quite live up to the laid-back image it projects -- the lobby is a zoo -- but it does have unexpectedly large rooms and remarkably comfortable beds (evidence of a multimillion-dollar renovation in 2009) in a neighborhood with very few hotels.

Magic Castle Hotel

Magic Castle Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Located steps from Hollywood Boulevard, the Magic Castle is a quirky, unpretentious 40-room hotel with simple, spacious rooms, an exhaustive list of free perks (Wi-Fi, breakfast, minibar treats), access to the exclusive Magic Castle club next door, and exceptional service. Overall, it's a great value and one of L.A.'s hidden gems.

The Standard, Downtown LA

The Standard, Downtown LA Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This once-hip, 207-room hotel may be the forgotten child of the Standard empire -- it's run-down and partied out -- but the poolside view is still hard to beat, the design is still striking, and the prices can dip way low. A fine deal for low-budget travelers who want a stellar downtown location and don't mind some grime.

La Quinta Inn & Suites LAX

La Quinta Inn & Suites LAX Rating: 2.5 Pearls

With 278-rooms on 10 floors, the La Quinta Inn and Suites LAX is a standard value hotel near the airport, attracting budget-conscious families and business travelers. It has four meeting rooms, a free airport shuttle, free American-style breakfast (which can get busy), a small fitness center with cardio machines, free Wi-Fi, an on-site restaurant and bar, and an outdoor pool. This hotel also caters to long-term guests living on-site. Rooms are contemporary in design, have flat-screen TVs and some natural light but have unattractive views. For all the same amenities -- plus more luxury -- there's the Hilton Los Angeles Airport, which is closer to LAX but has pricier rooms.
