Hidden Pond

Hidden Pond Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Spread over 60 acres, Hidden Pond resort features 36 suite-like bungalows and two-bedroom cottages. While each have their own personality, they are all bright, homey, and sophisticated, characterized by pops of color and lodge-like touches (such as stone fireplaces adorned with antlers, and a lamp made from a tree branch). The spa is set up to resemble a tree house, and free yoga classes are held at the organic farm (where guests may also pick fresh flowers and veggies). Another outstanding feature is the outdoor bar and grill that sits on a "sand bar," with chairs circled around fire pits. This upscale boutique hotel attracts couples with its tranquil environment and top-notch restaurants, as well as families with its cottages that include full kitchens and washer/dryers. The hotel also provides a free shuttle to the beach, which is just a five-minute drive away.
The Anchorage By the Sea

The Anchorage By the Sea Rating: 3.5 Pearls

As the real estate saying goes, it's all about location, location, location. That saying applies to the 220-room Anchorage by the Sea, a year-round hotel that's on prime beachfront real estate. The hotel is geared toward families, and has two heated pools (indoor and outdoor), three hot tubs, seasonal painting and yoga activities, and a charming restaurant and bar. Minimalist rooms are decorated in white-wood furniture and spurts of blue that are bright and welcoming. Common areas can become noisy and crowded with families. The nearby Beachmere Inn offers a quieter getaway but has more expensive rooms.
Nonantum Resort

Nonantum Resort Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Nonantum Resort occupies two buildings: the historic Carriage House Inn, with Victorian-style rooms (that lack modern amenities like flat-screen TVs), and the Portside Lodge, which features bright rooms decorated with paisley prints. Room decor varies incredibly, and some rooms are more pleasant than others. A popular wedding spot, the hotel is on a beautiful piece of land overlooking the water, but visitors are given a limited window to enjoy the resort -- the hotel closes for four months during the off-season. During the summer, families enjoy the kids' club, the small pool, and the kayak and bicycle rentals.
Stage Neck Inn York Harbor

Stage Neck Inn York Harbor Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Stage Neck Inn has a scenic oceanfront location, right next to York Harbor Beach in the cute town of York. The 58 rooms have simple decor (white bedspreads with green throws; beige walls) and free Wi-Fi; some have old tube TVs . The hotel offers some outstanding features, like access to the sandy beach ; an outdoor freshwater pool with ocean views; an indoor atrium pool which was re-opened in April 2012 after being completely reconstructed; and a fire pit surrounded by Adirondack chairs. The main restaurant Harbor Porches (which offers excellent ocean views) and the Sandpiper Bar & Grille are both open year-round, while the Outdoor Terrace and pool snack bar are open seasonally. But some guests complain about older furniture, a variety of fees, and minimum stay requirements.
The Colony Hotel

The Colony Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

With a waterfront location in Kennebunkport, the historic Colony Hotel offers incredible ocean views. Rooms vary in decor and are spread throughout the Main Building, the Galland, and the East House -- but not all rooms have TVs or air conditioning. The Colony Hotel has a welcoming attitude to both kids and dogs, attracting families with its heated saltwater swimming pool and a private sandy beach. While perks such as free Wi-Fi and breakfast are nice, some guests complain about the presence of too many dogs and the minimum stay requirements.
Ramada Plaza Portland

Ramada Plaza Portland Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The three-story Ramada Plaza Portland caters to all kinds of travelers looking for a full-service hotel at a good value. Amenities such as a pool and fitness center are nice but standard for a mid-range chain. Despite renovations in 2008, the hotel itself is a bit dated, right down to the rooms and bedding, but overall it's a good deal for the money. All rooms have balconies, while others also have refrigerators, microwaves, and whirlpool baths. The aforementioned common amenities -- as well as two restaurants, an outdoor patio, and a cozy lobby -- offer an incentive not to stay cooped up in the rooms.
The Beachmere Inn

The Beachmere Inn Rating: 3.0 Pearls

A waterfront property near Ogunquit, Maine, the Beachmere Inn is a family-run resort with simple, classic rooms spread through several buildings . The location is ideal, with views overlooking the ocean and coastal cliffs. Rooms here vary widely, and guests can choose between ocean-view suites with fireplaces and balconies or simpler options for those sticking to a budget. Beyond the location and views , perks here include a spa with two treatment rooms, a Jacuzzi , sauna , fitness room , and a kids' play room . The Beachmere Inn offers free Wi-Fi and signature cocktails at Bawdy Sally's pub , but some guests complain of loud wedding parties in the summer and some rooms -- specifically in the Bullfrog Cottage -- are in need of renovation.
Sea Rose Suites

Sea Rose Suites Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The 29 nonsmoking suites at the mid-range Sea Rose offer guests a homey experience. All have separate living rooms, kitchenettes, one or two bedrooms, and pullout sofas; they're large and particularly well-suited to families or groups of friends. The outdoor pool, indoor pool, and grilling area, are the main property features. The location is about a 15-minute walk from the beach and town center.
The Dunes on the Waterfront

The Dunes on the Waterfront Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The Dunes on the Waterfront is a quiet, dated (but cozy) retreat in busy Ogunquit, set on the banks of a picturesque tidal river. Room offerings vary wildly: Standard Rooms have run-of-the-mill, kitschy motel decor with floral print curtains and boring pine furniture, but Superior Rooms have extra space, bigger bathrooms and vaulted ceilings. If you're going all-out, the homey vibe of the Two-Bedroom Waterfront Cottage can't be beat, thanks to its full kitchen, views and screened-in porch. Families with kids will likely appreciate the hotel's abundance of outdoor space, free rowboats, and heated outdoor pool.
Meadowmere Resort

Meadowmere Resort Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The 144-room Meadowmere Resort combines the charm of a classic New England inn with some of the added amenities of a ritzier hotel, including a large fitness center, spa treatments, an indoor Roman Bath, and game room. The rooms are standard in size and nicely furnished with classic wood furniture and florals. Located a bit south of the central Ogunquit area, the hotel is still within walking distance of shops and restaurants. There’s plenty of fun to be had at the resort itself, between the pools, barbecue pits, game room, and library, and the beach is 15 to 20 minutes away on foot.
