The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua

The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua Rating: 5.0 Pearls

Reopened in January 2008 after a $180-million renovation, the 463-room Ritz-Carlton Kapalua boasts up-to-date rooms, top-notch dining, a quality spa, polished service, and beautifully landscaped grounds of national park proportions. It all comes at a slight risk, however, since its location comes with the least consistent, windiest, and rainiest weather of all of Maui's major resort areas.

Four Seasons Maui

Four Seasons Maui Rating: 5.0 Pearls

This gorgeous, 380-room luxury property fronting Wailea beach is one of the top resorts on Maui. It's incredibly romantic; couples and honeymooners will likely appreciate the spa and spectacular adults-only infinity pool (though sun loungers go fast). But families will find a ton to like a well, including a kid's activity club and pool, and tons of free equipment for the beach such as snorkel gear and volleyballs. Rooms are spacious with soaking bathtubs and some outstanding views of the Pacific. Dining is expensive and breakfast isn't included with the price of a room, but restaurants like Spago by Wolfgang Puck are probably worth the cost. The resort also provides plenty of freebies, including kids' club access and snorkel gear. Just be prepared for crowds at the lobby, pools, and beach.

Andaz Maui At Wailea

Andaz Maui At Wailea Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Four-and-a-half pearl Andaz Maui at Wailea was built in 2013 and has been popular with the jet set since its opening. The combination of Mokapu Beach access, personalized attention at ‘ĀWILI SPA, and a multi-tiered infinity pool draws honeymooners and couples for Hawaiian-style romance. There's a Japanese restaurant and a farm-to-table style restaurant for breakfast. Artisan cocktails are the norm at two lounges. Minimalist rooms are built with the bathroom in the center and some balconies overlook the beach. There isn't a resort fee but valet parking and breakfast cost extra. Kids are welcome, though the hip scene and concept bathrooms may not be the best fit for families. Check rates next door at Four Seasons Maui which often has comparable prices and a slightly more luxe, yet family-friendly, vibe.

The Fairmont Kea Lani Maui

The Fairmont Kea Lani Maui Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Wailea's aptly named Fairmont Kea Lani is a "white heaven" indeed -- its 450 units sit on a 22-acre beachfront property that includes four pools, four restaurants and one lounge, access to world-class golf, some of Maui's largest rooms, and a relentless dedication to service that rivals the nearby Four Seasons.

Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort

Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The beautifully designed, 780-room Grand Wailea is awe-inspiring in its scale: It's got the best pool in Hawaii, one of the top U.S. spas, and a prime location on one of the best U.S. beaches. Opulence marks every feature -- from the luxe rooms to the massive gym -- but the resort's Disneyland-like vibe isn't right for everyone.

Wailea Beach Villas

Wailea Beach Villas Rating: 4.0 Pearls

For families looking for a quiet, serene location on Wailea Beach, the Wailea Beach Villas are a good choice. Sharing the same stretch of Maui beach as some of the island's most luxurious hotels, the villa-style accommodations are ideal for larger groups and are available in two-and-three-bedroom configurations. Each villa features a full kitchen and laundry, plus a lanai (balcony or porch) and BBQ. The property has several of the features expected of a resort: several pools, beach chairs and umbrellas, cabanas, spa treatments, and a small fitness center. It lacks a restaurant and spa, though.

Sheraton Maui Resort

Sheraton Maui Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Built on Black Rock, a sacred Hawaiian landmark and one of the best snorkeling sites on Maui, the 508-room Sheraton has all the qualities of a modern mega-resort -- clean rooms, big pool, full spa, quality gym -- but nothing that compares to the enormous pool complex at the Westin Maui. Still, for the price, it's a fine choice.

Makena Beach and Golf Resort

Makena Beach and Golf Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Makena Beach and Golf Resort is an upscale property with a laid-back vibe on family friendly Maluaka Beach. Rooms have (some) private lanais overlooking the ocean, cherry wood furniture, and granite vanities in the bathrooms. The rates here are lower than what you'll find at nearby luxury resorts, but the swimming pool is much smaller. Still, there's off-the-beach snorkeling, three restaurants, free oceanfront yoga, and a spacious fitness center. The Hawaiian Rain Forest spa helps make this hotel an attractive option for honeymooners and couples. There's no resort fee and lots of free extras like parking, Wi-Fi, and resort activities, so guests won't feel nickel and dimed. It may be worth comparing rates at nearby four-pearl Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa for many of the same features, though you'll pay for parking and Wi-Fi there.

Hyatt Regency Maui Resort And Spa

Hyatt Regency Maui Resort And Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

One of the two top powerhouse resorts on Kaanapali Beach, the Hyatt Regency rivals the Westin Maui with its seemingly endless amenities, restaurants, massive pool complex, modern rooms, and nightly luaus. It's all but a toss-up between the two, save for the Hyatt's narrower, less-desireable stretch of beach.

The Westin Maui Resort & Spa

The Westin Maui Resort & Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The expansive Westin Maui Resort & Spa is a luxury property with direct access to swimmable Kaanapali Beach and popular Whalers' Village. There are a whopping 759 rooms, and though most of them have been renovated to include Hawaiian style furniture and fresh carpet, some look dated. With the amount of guests and size of the resort, lines can be long and service more efficient than personal. Prices here are lower than neighboring hotels while still offering a slew of above-average amenities like a five-pool aquatic playground, four restaurants, a full-service spa and gym. Resort fees are annoying, but they're a common theme in Maui. If you're looking for fewer kids and an infinity pool, compare rates at similarly priced Andaz Maui at Wailea, though you'll lose the Whalers' Village proximity and move to Wailea Beach.
