The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua

The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua Rating: 5.0 Pearls

Reopened in January 2008 after a $180-million renovation, the 463-room Ritz-Carlton Kapalua boasts up-to-date rooms, top-notch dining, a quality spa, polished service, and beautifully landscaped grounds of national park proportions. It all comes at a slight risk, however, since its location comes with the least consistent, windiest, and rainiest weather of all of Maui's major resort areas.

Four Seasons Maui

Four Seasons Maui Rating: 5.0 Pearls

This gorgeous, 380-room luxury property fronting Wailea beach is one of the top resorts on Maui. It's incredibly romantic; couples and honeymooners will likely appreciate the spa and spectacular adults-only infinity pool (though sun loungers go fast). But families will find a ton to like a well, including a kid's activity club and pool, and tons of free equipment for the beach such as snorkel gear and volleyballs. Rooms are spacious with soaking bathtubs and some outstanding views of the Pacific. Dining is expensive and breakfast isn't included with the price of a room, but restaurants like Spago by Wolfgang Puck are probably worth the cost. The resort also provides plenty of freebies, including kids' club access and snorkel gear. Just be prepared for crowds at the lobby, pools, and beach.

The Fairmont Kea Lani Maui

The Fairmont Kea Lani Maui Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Wailea's aptly named Fairmont Kea Lani is a "white heaven" indeed -- its 450 units sit on a 22-acre beachfront property that includes four pools, four restaurants and one lounge, access to world-class golf, some of Maui's largest rooms, and a relentless dedication to service that rivals the nearby Four Seasons.

Makena Beach and Golf Resort

Makena Beach and Golf Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Makena Beach and Golf Resort underwent major renovations in 2012 but it's still a four-pearl property with a laid back vibe on family friendly Maluaka Beach. Rooms have (some) private lanais overlooking the ocean, cherry wood furniture, and granite vanities in the bathrooms. Suites are spacious but still have shower/tub combinations in the bathrooms. The rates here are lower than what you'll find at nearby five-pearl resorts, but the swimming pool is much smaller. Still, there's off-the-beach snorkeling, three restaurants, a golf course, and weekly luau here -- plus free oceanfront yoga and a spacious fitness center. The Hawaiian Rain Forest spa makes this hotel an attractive option for honeymooners and couples. There's no resort fee and lots of free extras like parking, Wi-Fi, and resort activities so you won't feel nickeled and dimed. It may be worth comparing rates at nearby four-pearl Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa for many of the same features, though you'll pay for parking and Wi-Fi there.

The Westin Maui Resort & Spa

The Westin Maui Resort & Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 759-room Westin Maui's five-pool aquatic playground, direct access to Kaanapali Beach, exceptional beds, and a slew of above-average amenities make it one of the best mega-resorts for the price in Kaanapali, if not all of Maui. But at a resort this big, you'll have to wake up early to snag a lounger.

Marriott Wailea Resort

Marriott Wailea Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Situated on a rock between two beaches, the 22-acre, 546-room Wailea Marriott has panoramic ocean views and a serene vibe missing from some of the more crowded, neighboring resorts. Renovated in 2008, the Marriott's spiffy rooms, gorgeous adult-only infinity pool, reputable spa, and a popular restaurant make it the best midrange option in ritzy Wailea.

Travaasa Hana, Maui

Travaasa Hana, Maui Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Travaasa Hana, Maui overlooking Hana Bay delivers rustic luxury in the middle of Maui's lush, secluded east coast. Incredible service, top spa, excellent food, a long list of stuff to do, and only 70 rooms on acres of uncrowded property. The rooms are large, clean, sleekly furnished -- and stripped of TVs, air conditioners, clocks, and radios. Hard to reach unless you fly, but worth the trip.

The Plantation Inn

The Plantation Inn Rating: 3.5 Pearls

One of Maui's most intimate properties, with 19 mostly courtyard-facing rooms and suites, a small pool, free breakfast from the top-notch Gerard's Restaurant, and a small staff that coddles guests, the Plantation Inn is a rare and lovely option in harborfront Lahaina -- but beaches are more than a five-minute drive away.

Royal Lahaina Resort

Royal Lahaina Resort Rating: 3.5 Pearls

A 15-minute walk outside Kaanapali's main strip, the family-owned Royal Lahaina has what the Kaanapali mega-resorts lack -- a quiet, isolated beachfront. Its amenities -- just three small pools, a nightly luau, and an 11-court tennis facility -- don't rival those at the mega-resorts, but this is still a great pick for peace and relaxation.

Outrigger Aina Nalu

Outrigger Aina Nalu Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This refreshed condo property in the bustling, touristy town of Lahaina has fair-size, affordable studio, one- and two-bedroom units and two small, pleasant pools, but offers a bare minimum of amenities and services -- and the nearest beach is a five-minute drive away.
