The Resort at Fisher Island Club

The Resort at Fisher Island Club Rating: 5.0 Pearls

This 45-room hotel is located among homes of the super-rich on a lush, private island that's a 10-minute ferry ride from the Miami mainland. It doesn't have the party scene, the high-design rooms, or the gourmet restaurants of the mainland luxury hotels. But its history, charm, and beautiful golf and tennis facilities make it a great choice for couples and families looking for something special.

The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort

The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The 243-room St. Regis Bal Harbour is one of the most luxurious beachfront hotels in Miami. Highlights include lavish decor, spacious guestrooms with oceanfront balconies, two infinity pools, three on-site dining options, and a prime location across from Bal Harbour Shops. The hotel is an excellent choice for visitors who are indifferent to the South Beach party scene. Rooms are among Miami's priciest (for good reason); travelers looking for a cheaper alternative should try Fontainebleau Resort, 10 minutes south, which has less impressive rooms but more pools, restaurants, and nightlife. Those wanting to be closer to the action could also try the comparably luxurious W South Beach.

Turnberry Isle Miami

Turnberry Isle Miami Rating: 4.5 Pearls

An award-winning golf course, beautiful pools, elegant rooms (though generic), and an amazing spa make the Turnberry Isle Miami a true luxury retreat. But there's little to eat beyond the compound's gate, and even the Aventura Mall is several minutes away. Digging deep to pay for ordinary grub can get painful.

Trump International Beach Resort

Trump International Beach Resort Rating: 4.5 Pearls

A well-priced, amenities-packed hotel right on the beach in Sunny Isles, the Trump International Beach Resort offers service that's extremely friendly and professional, but more casual than at other Trump properties. Limited dining and nightlife options, plus kid-friendly features, make it a better fit for families and business travelers than scene-hunting sophisticates.

Fontainebleau Resort Miami Beach

Fontainebleau Resort Miami Beach Rating: 4.5 Pearls

After its $1 billion facelift in 2008, the Fontainebleau's 1,504 new rooms, nine pools, phenomenal spa and gorgeous design are hard to top. Despite its sexy ads and nightclub, it's a relaxed property that attracts mostly families and convention goers. Its peacful Miami Beach location - next to the also snazzy Eden Roc hotel - is 30 blocks from the South Beach action.

The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne

The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne Rating: 4.5 Pearls

A tranquil 450-room island resort off the Miami mainland on Key Biscayne, the Ritz provides some of the traditional "Ritzy" benchmarks -- impeccably kept grounds, huge pools, a brilliant spa, a world-class tennis center, a kids' club, and elegant (if generic) interiors. Too bad service is uneven and the sliver of beach is covered in seaweed.

Canyon Ranch Hotel & Spa Miami Beach

Canyon Ranch Hotel & Spa Miami Beach Rating: 4.5 Pearls

With some of the most beautifully decorated large rooms in Miami, a beachfront location, a great spa, and a huge fitness center with a rock-climbing wall and dozens of daily classes, Canyon Ranch is a great choice for a healthy vacation -- provided you're not also looking for nightlife or a happening pool scene.

The Grove Isle Hotel & Spa

The Grove Isle Hotel & Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Isolated on its own, 20-acre island off the coast of funky Coconut Grove, the Grove Isle offers big rooms (each with a balcony and a stunning view), a spa, 12 tennis courts, an open-air restaurant, a superb fitness center, and a marina. But there's no beach, just a patch of sand on some concrete by the pool, some rooms and public areas need updating, and the remote location means there's not a lot to do (an upside for those in search of tranquility).

Biltmore Coral Gables - Miami

Biltmore Coral Gables - Miami Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Built in 1926, the iconic Biltmore (a national landmark) brings timeless luxury to a hotel scene overwhelmed by skin-deep glitz. Though far from any beaches, it offers doting (tip-free) service, a miraculous pool, a prestigious golf course and a catalog of amenities. Unfortunately, its residential neighborhood can get boring.

Trump Doral Golf Resort & Spa

Trump Doral Golf Resort & Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Something for everyone: a world-class golf; a full-service spa; a 125-foot waterslide. And it's all graced with warm, friendly service in a scenic resort setting. Just know that you're isolated on-site, you're nowhere near the beach, and everything costs extra -- often quite a bit extra. Expect prices to rise even more after a $200 million renovation in Fall 2013.
