Carmel Valley Ranch

Carmel Valley Ranch Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Carmel Valley Ranch is a 500-acre property offering modern luxury in a rustic, bucolic setting, with tall oak trees, organic gardens, and rolling vineyards. Rooms are decorated in soft tones and feature flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and Keurig coffeemakers. Enormous, immaculate bathrooms with soaking tubs and separate walk-in showers provide space to relax, along with small private decks and travertine fireplaces. The ranch's many features include two outdoor pools -- the River Ranch Pool, featuring a splash zone for kids, and the Lodge Pool -- as well as an 18-hole golf course designed by Pete Dye. There are seven fire pits perfect for nightly fireside s'mores, and endless activities -- tai chi or beekeeping, anyone? -- that can keep both couples and families entertained. And everywhere, amazing views abound.

Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel & Spa

Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel & Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The centrally located Hyatt Regency Monterey is one of the largest properties in the area, which also makes it a great price for the value. The 550 rooms are spacious, attractive and modern with sleek design touches -- such as behind-the-headboard uplights, backlit bathroom mirrors, and stylish contemporary art. Most rooms have balconies or patios with views of the on-site golf course. However, in a not-so-modern twist, the rooms are not air-conditioned, and even though the climate is temperate, heat waves can make rooms uncomfortably warm. Luckily, the two on-site pools and nearby beach can help with any warmer-than-usual weather.

Portola Hotel & Spa at Monterey Bay

Portola Hotel & Spa at Monterey Bay Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The upper-middle-range Portola is a sprawling waterfront property right in the heart of Downtown Monterey. Its 379 spacious rooms have attractive nautical-themed decor, large flat-screen TVs, and empty mini-fridges. Property highlights include a solid restaurant serving fresh California cuisine; Monterey’s first and only craft brewery; a serene spa with great treatments, and extensive meeting space. However, there are extra fees that might make guests feel nickel-and-dimed -- such as charges for self- and valet parking, and for Wi-Fi. Plus, most bathrooms could use an update. Still, its great kids' program makes it a solid pick for families, and its location is very convenient both for business and leisure travelers.

Bernardus Lodge

Bernardus Lodge Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 57-room rustic-luxe retreat in Carmel Valley sits in a lovely setting among rolling hills and vineyards. Details such as vaulted beamed ceilings, wood-burning fireplaces, and country-inspired decor help create an atmosphere that is homey and cozy. Rooms are large and comfortable with stone fireplaces, feather beds, and plush white bedding, and big bathrooms feature walk-in showers and two-person soaking tubs. Some rooms feature double French doors that lead to cute private patios with Jacuzzis, while rooms on higher floors have decks instead. There are several restaurants here -- including the famous Marinus restaurant with its chef's table where up to five guests can dine while watching the chef cook. Additional appealing amenities include an outdoor pool, pool bar, and inviting spa where wine-based treatments are available. It's a sophisticated, romantic spot in Carmel Valley.

Hotel Abrego

Hotel Abrego Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 93-room Hotel Abrego's style lies in the nice middle ground between "family casual" and "acceptably business chic." The spacious guest rooms are painted in muted earth tones and come complete with flat-screen TVs, fireplaces, iPod docks and comfortable bedding. The most notable drawback is the rooms' lack of air-conditioning: Even with the temperate California climate, the au naturel "open a window" method does little to bring the temperature down during a heat wave. But the hotel's fantastic location within walking distance of the beach, downtown, and Fisherman's Wharf is a clear perk.

Monterey Marriott

Monterey Marriott Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This 319-room hotel is centrally located in Downtown Monterey, connected via sky-bridge to the Convention Center and a few blocks from Fisherman’s Wharf. The airy rooms are less generic than what one would expect from a mid-range chain hotel, but some could use an update. It is a perfectly adequate hotel, but guests might feel nickel-and-dimed (there are fees for Wi-Fi and valet parking), and it is certainly a bit pricey for what it offers: a decent-size pool, a nice fitness center, and a couple standard dining options on-site. Book a room on the top floors for better views and more light.
