Hotel 1110

Hotel 1110 Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 18-room Inn at Del Monte Beach doesn't look like much upon arrival -- located on a busy street between a McDonald's and a tattoo parlor, the hotel appears a bit run-down, and the hodge-podge of vintage furniture in the lobby may take some getting used to. But if you can look past the surface, the hotel has a warm feel with a cozy lobby bar, a delicious free breakfast, and an ocean-view rooftop deck where the free cocktail hour sometimes takes place. All rooms have a slightly differently look (and some are more in need of updates than others) and feature flat-screen TVs and fireplaces.

Casa Munras Hotel & Spa

Casa Munras Hotel & Spa Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This upper-middle-range hacienda-style hotel in Old Town Monterey claims to be rich in Spanish heritage, but looks more like a traditional chain hotel. The ivy and flower-covered exterior is pretty, as is the modern lobby with a stone fireplace and cozy leather chairs, but something about the place is almost too "done" to feel authentic. The rooms are spacious and feature some modern amenities such as flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and some have cozy fireplaces. But the real pleasure of this hotel lies in its social outdoor spaces. Candles, fire pits and cozy seating invite guests to gather outside -- and most do in the evenings. For a mid-range hotel, the spa here is fantastic -- that, along with the tapas restaurant, outdoor pool, and convenient location -- make this hotel a great pick, especially at its affordable price.

Carriage House Inn

Carriage House Inn Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 13 rooms of the Carriage House Inn are cozy, quaint, and may feel a bit dated, but overall are full of fairytale charm mirroring Carmel's enchanting vibe -- the Victorian-cottage flowered wallpaper would unlikely be acceptable anywhere else. Fireplaces, free snacks that are replenished daily, and quality toiletries can be found in the rooms, along with other free perks guests can access throughout their stays. The "extended" continental breakfast is a nice touch -- guests get to select the foods they want for breakfast, and the meal is delivered to their room in the morning. One of the hotel's strongest assets is that downtown Carmel is just a short walk away, but it offers some great amenities to return to -- especially free wine and hors d'oeuvres every evening, as well as a charming lobby with fresh flowers, free coffee and treats, and a decent free movie and book selection.

The Lighthouse Lodge

The Lighthouse Lodge Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The Lighthouse Lodge may not offer the most luxurious digs in the area, but rooms are large and feature working fireplaces and kitchenettes. Decor is on the dated side (think early 1990s motor-inn lodge) and the exterior appearance is nothing to fawn over, but for the price it's hard to beat. Plus, there are plenty of outdoor activities for those seeking some fresh air -- especially with the adjacent historic cemetery, nearby beach, and golf course. But some may find Pacific Grove a bit too far off the beaten path; for a hotel in a similar price range in more popular Monterey, consider the Inn at Del Monte Beach.

Lighthouse Suites

Lighthouse Suites Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This 31-room hotel sits on the northwestern tip of Pacific Grove, right by the Municipal Golf Links and a two-minute drive from the ocean. It is somewhere between a cozy inn and an aging hotel, with large suites and studios that have few high-tech amenities (but very large tube TVs), working fireplaces, Jacuzzis and mini-kitchenettes with microwaves and mini-fridges, but no stovetops. There’s a (small) fee for Wi-Fi, but breakfast and a light dinner are included in the price of the room, and the hotel shares a heated pool with its sister property down the street. This is a convenient location for golfers, but if you want a sandy beach within walking distance of shops and restaurants, better stay closer to Monterey.

Carmel Lodge

Carmel Lodge Rating: 3.0 Pearls

It may be one of many old inns sprinkled throughout Carmel's beautiful tree-lined streets, but the 38-room Carmel Lodge feels a bit more run-down than the others, which may be why it is scheduled to be torn down in 2013 and rebuilt from the ground up. Still, the location is excellent -- just blocks from grocery stores, local restaurants, and coffee shops -- and the hotel is one of the only dog-friendly lodges in Carmel. Rooms are comfortable, with simple designs, cute shutters, and average bathrooms (though some shower heads are rusting). Most small inns within Carmel offer plenty of free perks, and this one isn't too different except for the annoying parking fee. With virtually zero places to relax on-site, however, Carmel Lodge may be an okay place to sleep -- beware of heat waves, because there's no air-conditioning -- but there isn't much else to see or do on premises.

Wayside Inn

Wayside Inn Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The 22-room Wayside Inn is a motel-style building with a parking lot in the front that slightly cheapens its facade. But despite the first impression, the inn is quaint and charming -- ivy climbs the brick walls, many rooms have balconies, and pretty flowers line the walkways. The rooms don French- or English-cottage decor, which can feel either cozy or tired, depending on your taste. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and iPod docks, and many have fireplaces. But the real highlight of the hotel is its downtown location -- just don't expect much in the way of extra amenities.

Americas Best Value Stage Coach Lodge

Americas Best Value Stage Coach Lodge Rating: 2.5 Pearls

The 26-room budget America's Best Value Stage Coach Lodge is a family-run chain hotel that doesn't feel chain-like, thanks to the owners’ taste and attention to detail. The Stage Coach is a bona fide (but charming) roadside motel, convenient to Monterey’s most popular attractions, with beautiful flowers on the grounds and in the common areas, a pristine outdoor pool, and a Diver's Station for the convenience of scuba enthusiasts. Rooms are updated and spotless, with comfortable furniture and cheerful decor.

Hofsas House Hotel

Hofsas House Hotel Rating: 2.5 Pearls

This 38-room German-chalet-style boutique hotel is unique for multiple reasons. First, it actually has a few on-site facilities, including a well-kept (and attractive) heated pool and two saunas. Although rooms are rather bland and dated, with empty walls and old tube TVs, they're clean, large, and have plenty of natural light; some even have private balconies and fireplaces. While there aren't any dining options on-site, the hotel's location is perfect for parking the car and walking to the downtown Carmel area. Being that the hotel was built on a hill and stands four stories tall (most in Carmel are no more than two), the viewing deck, balconies, and even some rooms, offer glimpses of the beautiful Pacific.

Dolphin Inn

Dolphin Inn Rating: 2.5 Pearls

Like many other Carmel inns, the 27-room Dolphin Inn has a quaint, old-fashioned feel, and offers guests lots of good freebies and personal attention. Fresh coffee and cookies in the lobby are replenished throughout the day. There are a few small tables with fresh-cut flowers, but unlike the nearby Carriage House Inn, there is no common fireplace or comfy relaxation area. Rooms are simple, spacious and bright, with flat-screen TVs, and some come with fireplaces. But they could use an update: Some rooms have stains on the carpet and peeling paint around the sinks. Guests have commonly complained about sound easily traveling through the walls, especially on the bottom floor or near the vending machines. The outdoor pool, although small and lackluster, is a rare amenity in Carmel, where few inns offer a swimming facility on-site.
