InterContinental Montreal

InterContinental Montreal Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Located on the edge of Old Montreal, the InterContinental offers contemporary rooms decorated in creams and rich reds, and sleek marble-and-granite bathrooms. (The hotel promises "sexytude" on its website, and the rooms are indeed a bit sexier than you'd expect from an upscale chain). The saltwater pool, a sun deck, and a trendy bar and restaurant are all pluses.

Hotel Le Crystal

Hotel Le Crystal Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Hotel Le Crystal, located in Downtown Montreal, is convenient for both business travelers and families, thanks to its big suites with kitchenettes and pull-out sofas. Room decor is clean-lined and contemporary, with lots of wood accents, while the lobby delivers more of a wow factor with its sleek, trendy style. The lovely indoor pool offers great views of the city through floor-to-ceiling windows, the French brasserie is elegant, and the fitness center is big and modern.

Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth

Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This massive, 1,073-room upscale chain hotel is located in Downtown Montreal, and connected to Montreal Central Station and the Underground City. It has a fairly nice fitness center, a three-lane lap pool, and three restaurants (including The Beaver Club, a famous, fancy dining destination). Spacious rooms have sitting areas, a well as PlayStations and flat-screen TVs, but they're a bit bland and starting to show wear, and many bathrooms are cramped.

Hyatt Regency Montreal

Hyatt Regency Montreal Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Designed for the business traveler, the 605-room Hyatt Regency Montreal has a great downtown location, and both the business center and fitness center are open around-the-clock. Pricey fees for Wi-Fi, parking, and meals are downsides, but perks include the indoor pool, large terrace, and underground access to lots of sites and attractions. Some guests find the second-floor lobby difficult to find, but its sleek, trendy feel -- which carries over into contemporary rooms -- gives this hotel its edge.

Loews Hotel Vogue

Loews Hotel Vogue Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 142-room hotel stands smack-dab in the heart of Downtown Montreal, amid tourist attractions, boutiques and restaurants. Decent-sized rooms come with iPod docks and flat-screen TVs, as well as marble bathrooms with small TVs and big whirlpool tubs, but the fresh white-and-white decor is what makes them truly stand out. The hotel lacks a pool, but it does have a nice (albeit small) fitness center, a spacious restaurant, and several meeting rooms.

Hilton Garden Inn Montreal Centre-Ville

Hilton Garden Inn Montreal Centre-Ville Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Hilton Garden Inn has a convenient location near McGill University in Downtown Montreal, and spacious, clean (if generic) rooms with mini-fridges and microwaves. The indoor saltwater lap pool is attractive, with excellent city views and a connected outdoor terrace, and the fitness center is large and bright. But the property lacks distinctive charm.

Hotel Ruby Foo's

Hotel Ruby Foo's Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 198-room Hotel Ruby Foo's lies about 10 minutes outside of Montreal's downtown area, next to a major highway. The hotel's modern, Asian-inspired decor emphasizes rich, dark colors, giving the rooms a sophisticated (if not luxurious) feel. What the hotel lacks in location, it helps compensate for with with amenities: a day spa; restaurants; salon; and large 24-hour gym.

Hotel Terrasse Royale

Hotel Terrasse Royale Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Hotel Terrasse Royale is a bland, older property in Cotes-des-Neiges, about 10 miles outside of downtown Montreal. Many of the large rooms have kitchenettes, but they feel drab and worn, and the small bathrooms feel sterile. At least the hotel is only a few blocks from the metro station, and offers free Wi-Fi.

Novotel Montreal Centre

Novotel Montreal Centre Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Novotel Montreal Centre offers spacious rooms with clean, contemporary decor (think: Ikea), and a convenient location in Downtown Montreal, right next to shopping on Sainte-Catherine Street. But there are few features -- just a decent fitness center, a solid restaurant with outdoor seating, and meetings rooms -- and there's a fee for Wi-Fi.

Holiday Inn Montreal Midtown

Holiday Inn Montreal Midtown Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This 488-room hotel in Downtown Montreal has more amenities than you might expect from a mid-range chain, including a spa, large fitness center, and special extras like a sauna and steam room. Although the rooms are rather generic, with bland beige wallpaper and worn carpets, they're clean and relatively spacious. The bathrooms are awkwardly designed, though, with a sink and changing room on one side of the hallway and a toilet and shower/tub combo on the other. The on-site restaurant serves pretty standard hotel fare, but many other eating and drinking options are just a short walk away.
