InterContinental Montreal

InterContinental Montreal Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Located on the edge of Old Montreal, the InterContinental offers contemporary rooms decorated in creams and rich reds, and sleek marble-and-granite bathrooms. (The hotel promises "sexytude" on its website, and the rooms are indeed a bit sexier than you'd expect from an upscale chain). The saltwater pool, a sun deck, and a trendy bar and restaurant are all pluses.
Hotel Le Crystal

Hotel Le Crystal Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Hotel Le Crystal, located in Downtown Montreal, is convenient for both business travelers and families, thanks to its big suites with kitchenettes and pull-out sofas. Room decor is clean-lined and contemporary, with lots of wood accents, while the lobby delivers more of a wow factor with its sleek, trendy style. The lovely indoor pool offers great views of the city through floor-to-ceiling windows, the French brasserie is elegant, and the fitness center is big and modern.
Auberge du Vieux-Port

Auberge du Vieux-Port Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Situated across from Le Vieux-Port, this 403-room hotel reflects the charm of Old Montreal. Its beautiful, airy rooms -- some with water views -- feature details like wood beam ceilings, exposed stone and brick walls, wrought iron beds, wood floors, and lovely bathrooms with big glass showers or soaking tubs. The larger, apartment-style "lofts" are in a separate building, and designed for long-term stays. The hotel's seasonal rooftop terrace restaurant offers phenomenal water views, and the free full breakfast each morning is a perk. But because of the location near restaurants and bars, noise in the rooms may be a problem, especially during the summer months.
Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth

Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This massive, 1,073-room upscale chain hotel is located in Downtown Montreal, and connected to Montreal Central Station and the Underground City. It has a fairly nice fitness center, a three-lane lap pool, and three restaurants (including The Beaver Club, a famous, fancy dining destination). Spacious rooms have sitting areas, a well as PlayStations and flat-screen TVs, but they're a bit bland and starting to show wear, and many bathrooms are cramped.
Hyatt Regency Montreal

Hyatt Regency Montreal Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Designed for the business traveler, the 605-room Hyatt Regency Montreal has a great downtown location, and both the business center and fitness center are open around-the-clock. Pricey fees for Wi-Fi, parking, and meals are downsides, but perks include the indoor pool, large terrace, and underground access to lots of sites and attractions. Some guests find the second-floor lobby difficult to find, but its sleek, trendy feel -- which carries over into contemporary rooms -- gives this hotel its edge.
Le Place D'Armes Hotel & Suites

Le Place D'Armes Hotel & Suites Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 133-room boutique, located in a historic building in Old Montreal, blends contemporary design with old-world charm. The large lobby, with a pool table and modern leather seating, is stylish yet cozy. The rooms follow suit, with crisp white bedding, hardwood floors, and upscale bathrooms; some have extras like exposed brick and big soaking tubs. There are a few flaws, though -- outdated tube TVs in many rooms, some visible nicks and scratches on the wood furniture, and some rooms with tight quarters. But perks like free Wi-Fi, a free downtown shuttle, and an excellent Clef d'Or concierge add value.
Hotel Nelligan

Hotel Nelligan Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 105-room historic boutique captures the charm of Old Montreal, with attractive details like fireplaces, wrought-iron railings, and exposed brick walls. It offers multiple eateries, including the popular summertime Nelligan Terrace, situated on the hotel's roof, and a charming bar/art exhibit in the hotel's atrium. The fitness center is 24-hour, but the hotel doesn't have a pool or full-service spa (just a "massage room" attached to the gym). Its obvious strengths are its historic, European elegance and its location in the heart of Old Montreal.
Loews Hotel Vogue

Loews Hotel Vogue Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 142-room hotel stands smack-dab in the heart of Downtown Montreal, amid tourist attractions, boutiques and restaurants. Decent-sized rooms come with iPod docks and flat-screen TVs, as well as marble bathrooms with small TVs and big whirlpool tubs, but the fresh white-and-white decor is what makes them truly stand out. The hotel lacks a pool, but it does have a nice (albeit small) fitness center, a spacious restaurant, and several meeting rooms.
Le St-Martin Montreal Hotel Particulier

Le St-Martin Montreal Hotel Particulier Rating: 4.0 Pearls

There’s a lot to like about this upscale hotel: a convenient location in the heart of Downtown; 123 stylish rooms with comfy beds and up-to-date amenities; a small but pretty outdoor pool; and a solid restaurant. But there’s no business center, the fitness center -- though bright and modern -- is tiny, and some guests have complained of traffic noise on the lower floors.
