The Caves

The Caves Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Arguably Jamaica's most romantic escape (for adults only), the Caves' 12 unique, private cottages and suites are tucked along lush garden paths and dramatic seaside cliffs (there's no beach). High-quality, locally focused cuisine, a top-shelf bar, and intimate, incredibly attentive service make it Jamaica's best all-inclusive, though nearby Tensing Pen and Rockhouse offer similar settings at cheaper prices.

Rockhouse Hotel

Rockhouse Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The lush, laid-back Rockhouse creates a holistic haven -- gourmet dining, morning yoga, cliffside loungers, a premium spa, no kids under 12, and beautiful eco-appropriate design. But most astounding are the reasonable rates. (The slightly chicer Caves costs about three times more.)

Beaches Negril Resort & Spa

Beaches Negril Resort & Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Designed for families with kids and teens, Beaches Negril Resort & Spa is a beautiful property with a wide variety of activities, classes, and events. With a water park, kids' camp, teen hangouts and specialty activities, children have plenty to keep them busy, and adults can enjoy the spa or candlelit dining for two. Contemporary rooms have ocean views and the biggest one sleeps up to 12 people. The location, right on Negril’s Seven Mile Beach, puts the resort a short drive away from the town center and a number of shops, boutiques, and craft markets, as well as restaurants and bars. Since the majority of guests are families, the resort can get noisy, but the hotel is so large that it's possible to find quiet. Couples may be happier at the adults-only Sandals Carlyle Inn -- Beaches' all-inclusive sister property in Montego Bay.

Tensing Pen

Tensing Pen Rating: 3.5 Pearls

With an intimate collection of 17 cottages (22 rooms), Tensing Pen is where guests come to unplug -- no TVs, phones, or radios in the rooms -- and enjoy the breathtaking cliffs of Negril's west end. The pool, spa, and restaurant are a little smaller and less popular than at the similarly priced, similarly styled Rockhouse boutique, but most guests prefer the quiet exclusivity found here.

Grand Lido Negril

Grand Lido Negril Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Grand Lido's great liquor, decent food, 24-hour room service, intimate setting, and naked hot-tub parties bring a little grown-up indulgence to the more traditional, family-focused all-inclusive resort scene. However, that indulgence comes with a rather over-inflated price tag and the guest rooms are showing considerable wear -- Couples Swept Away is often the better deal.

Sunset at the Palms

Sunset at the Palms Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Across the street from the beach, the upscale Sunset has a warm, helpful staff, intimate setting, and great food -- all of which create a relaxing retreat that's a far cry from the crowded chaos at most all-inclusives. This adults-only property is designed for mellow couples or small groups.

Riu Palace Tropical Bay All Inclusive

Riu Palace Tropical Bay All Inclusive Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Renovated in December 2008, this is one of the Caribbean's best Rius. At 416 rooms, it's still a crowded mega-resort, but modern rooms with marble bathrooms, a calm beach, and a top-notch activities staff make this a great choice for couples and families (especially with pull-out sofas in every room). Partiers, however, should look elsewhere.

ClubHotel Riu Negril

ClubHotel Riu Negril Rating: 3.0 Pearls

A friendly resort with a mellow beach, free minibars, and a surprisingly solid buffet -- the Riu Negril is a great value. Rooms aren't spectacular, and many activities require a long walk across the sprawling resort, but most guests are sold once they join revelers on the dance floor.

Beaches Sandy Bay

Beaches Sandy Bay Rating: 3.0 Pearls

THIS HOTEL HAS CLOSED.

The Beaches Sandy Bay Resort has one of best beaches in Jamaica, with golden sand, swimmable waters and few vendors. It offers clean, comfortable rooms, average food, and tons of kid and teen facilities. In short, it's smaller, cheaper and more low-key than nearby Beaches Negril.

Catcha Falling Star Resort

Catcha Falling Star Resort Rating: 2.5 Pearls

There's no lobby or elaborate features, but Catcha's quaint cliffside huts come with warm service, open-air showers, breathtaking sunsets, comfortable beds, and simple homemade cuisine. Most guests are too focused on the blissful setting to notice the grainy TV reception or absence of a phone (cell phones available upon request); no guests under 15 adds to the quiet.
