Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa

Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

As Waikiki's first hotel, the 1901 plantation-style oceanfront Moana Surfrider offers a dose of historic charm on one of the nicest -- albeit most congested -- stretches of Waikiki Beach. Small rooms are offset by impressive public spaces, including an outdoor courtyard with live nightly music beneath a sweeping banyan tree, and an enormous spa and fitness center.

The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort

The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Of the three luxury hotels in Waikiki -- the Moana Surfrider and the Halekulani are the others -- the 528-room Royal Hawaiian provides the most stunning design, the warmest service, and a solid collection of free little extras, turndown treats, and welcome leis.

Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa

Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa Rating: 4.5 Pearls

This gorgeous property in the Ko Olina resort complex delivers on all of the Disney staples -- but in a much more subtle way than the brand's mainland destinations. Service is excellent, the food is delicious, and the kids always come first. The pool area is gorgeous, boasting a lazy river, two waterslides, and a manmade reef, and the coved-in lagoon offers calm waters. Room decor is cheerful and bright, with nods to both the Mouse that made Disney famous and Hawaii's rich culture. Overall the resort is one of the best in Oahu for families, but those looking for more nightlife should consider someplace closer to Waikiki.

Halekulani

Halekulani Rating: 4.5 Pearls

One of the island's best hotels, with 456 large, luxury-packed rooms, top restaurants with gorgeous views, a notable spa, fastidious service, and a former Miss Hawaii dancing the hula nightly. Too bad the property's formal, understated elegance can sometimes feel cold.

Hilton Hawaiian Village

Hilton Hawaiian Village Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The largest resort in Hawaii is a veritable village, with five towers, five pools, 20 bars and restaurants, 90 shops, direct beach access, and a separate lagoon. The crowds can get big and the lines long. But for families and other Waikiki vacationers looking for a self-contained resort with loads to do, the Hilton is a top choice.

Outrigger Reef On The Beach

Outrigger Reef On The Beach Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This hotel, located directly on Waikiki Beach, has many admirable features: a great pool deck, three affordable restaurants with vibrant atmosphere, a spa, artwork and activities that get visitors in touch with Hawaiian culture, and spacious, tastefully decorated, tropical-themed rooms. In short, one of the best Waikiki choices in its price range.

Sheraton Waikiki

Sheraton Waikiki Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Legend has it King Kamehameha built his royal bungalow on the site where the Sheraton (renovated in 2009) now stands -- and the location really is that picturesque and convenient. The beach is nice, shopping and nightlife are a minute away, and it has fantastic pools and restaurants on-site. The rooms sparkle, but with 1,636 of them, the service can be spotty and the atmosphere chaotic.
