Marriott Waikiki Beach Resort And Spa

Marriott Waikiki Beach Resort And Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A massive, 1,310-room beachside resort that delivers both what you expect from the Marriott -- friendly service, well-kept grounds -- and what you might not -- five restaurants (including Waikiki's best sushi), a top spa on-site, and free snorkel and scuba lessons. For families especially, this is a solid midrange value.

Hilton Hawaiian Village

Hilton Hawaiian Village Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The largest resort in Hawaii is a veritable village, with five towers, five pools, 20 bars and restaurants, 90 shops, direct beach access, and a separate lagoon. The crowds can get big and the lines long. But for families and other Waikiki vacationers looking for a self-contained resort with loads to do, the Hilton is a top choice.

Hilton Waikiki Beach

Hilton Waikiki Beach Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Families will find more to do at other, more resort-like places, like the Hyatt Regency Waikiki or Hilton Hawaiian Village. But the Hilton's rooms are bright, spacious, and stylish, and there's a solid 24-hour restaurant and an attractive pool. If you can nab a room for under $200, it's a great deal -- no matter whom you're traveling with.

Hyatt Place Waikiki Beach

Hyatt Place Waikiki Beach Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Hyatt Place is a family-friendly, mid-range option located a couple of blocks from the beach. It features 426 rooms, all equipped with large flat-screen TVs with on-demand movies, pull-out sofas, and balconies. The deep blue accent walls give rooms a smart, contemporary look, but decor is generic with few Hawaiian touches beyond a floral print throw on the bed, and some rooms are small. Property highlights include a small pool surrounded by a large sun deck with plenty of seating and shaded areas; several casual dining options, and a fitness center with high-end equipment. But those who want a beachfront location might want to compare prices at the nearby Marriott Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa.

The Equus

The Equus Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This 67-room boutique along noisy Ala Moana Boulevard isn't much to look at. And though the ocean is across the street, views of it are mostly blocked by taller buildings. But the rooms are stylish; the small staff is friendly and accommodating; the beach, the business district, and shopping are all within walking distance; and the rates are reasonable.

Ala Moana Hotel

Ala Moana Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

A 1,176-room condominium hotel catering primarily to business travelers, the Ala Moana is off the beach, outside of Waikiki, near the convention center, and attached to the Ala Moana Center, a huge upscale mall. Small but clean standard rooms are nicely decorated, and generally less expensive than those at the nearby Ilikai and Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki, making it a decent value.

Doubletree Alana Hotel Waikiki

Doubletree Alana Hotel Waikiki Rating: 3.0 Pearls

A solid outpost of the Doubletree chain, located 10 minutes from both the convention center and the beach, this spot on busy Ala Moana doesn't have much local flavor, like the nearby Aqua Palms, or impressive features, like the Hilton Hawaiian Village, but it's a decent choice for business and the rooms were renovated in late 2010.

Ilikai Hotel & Suites, an Aqua Boutique

Ilikai Hotel & Suites, an Aqua Boutique Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The once-historic Ilikai has the makings of a great hotel -- massive, clean rooms, an elegant open-air lobby, a newly refurbished pool, and a well-equipped fitness center. But the hotel is far from the heart of Waikiki, and it's working to recover after financial problems in 2009.
