But this is a much mellower version of Vegas, most popular among locals and families. For a party scene, stay closer to the Strip.

The highlights at this Westin are the brand's signature features: a large, modern gym, a great spa, and the Heavenly Bed. The dark atmosphere, dated decor, and sub-par upkeep diminish this mid-priced hotel's appeal. But travelers who want to be close to the Strip but away from the crowds will appreciate the location.

A business hotel beside the Convention Center with sleek interiors, a great gym and an excellent steakhouse. Rooms are standard and boring; suites can accommodate large parties and families. The scene at this non-gaming, off-the-Strip Marriott property is mostly conventioneers, and wouldn't be fun for leisure travelers.

A classy condo-hotel tucked behind the big casinos, this 255-suite property is one of the best off-the-Strip values to be found. The luxurious oversized apartments are spectacular. The relaxing pool with a view, modern gym and stylish lounge add to the hotel's low-key, high-service sensibility.

Opened in July 2010, the adults-only Rumor Resort promises guests a hip, intimate, and above all, sexy experience off the Strip. With bold, quirky design that's heavy on the purple, 150 rooms (many with balconies or patios, some with two-person tubs), a pool and bar open 24 hours, and lots of freebies, it delivers.

Convenient to the Las Vegas Convention Center, the LVH- Las Vegas Hotel and Casino is a quiet alternative to Strip hotels, particularly for business travelers and conventioneers. With big-name entertainment, a sizable casino, and quality dining options, the resort doesn't have to be all work, no play.

With free breakfast, a free open bar every evening and free Wi-Fi, this casino-free suites hotel is a solid choice for business travelers heading to the nearby convention center. But the lovely 11-story lobby atrium can't overcome the tired design, disappointing pool and dark rooms. Business-traveler friendly, but forgettable.

The roomy standard suites at the 2,526-room Rio sleep up to five, making them a tremendous deal for small groups. The restaurants and seafood buffet offer better fare than many other budget-priced hotels do, and the view from the rooftop bar is memorable. The off-the-Strip location is a drag, but a free shuttle helps.
