The Breakers Palm Beach

The Breakers Palm Beach Rating: 5.0 Pearls

This sprawling 140-acre resort feels more like a Renaissance palace than a hotel. The oceanfront grounds are defined by historic architecture and elegant landscaping, and the extensive features include five swimming pools, two 18-hole golf courses, 10 tennis courts, 9 restaurants, and 10 boutique shops. The Breakers’ 540 rooms include all of the modern amenities -- minibars, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and iPod stereos -- but most feel a bit cramped for the price. The only major downside of The Breakers is its expensive, albeit delicious, on-site dining: A family of four could easily spend $350 a day on food, without ordering anything special. As far as competing hotels in Palm Beach go, nothing compares to the luxury found at this iconic property.

Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach

Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The Four Seasons Resort is located on a relatively quiet stretch of sand about a 10-minute drive south of the area's main attractions. The 210 rooms are decorated in sophisticated beach style, with a blue, white and cream color scheme, and have private balconies. There are thoughtful amenities for families; the chic spa is a high point; and guests can expect extra touches like water spritzes and sunscreen at the (smallish) ocean-view pool. But some may feel the property isn't quite up to the usual Four Seasons standard: The building exterior is short on curb appeal, rooms lack "wow" factor, and some have complained that poolside and beachside service could be better.

The Brazilian Court Hotel

The Brazilian Court Hotel Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The historic, 80-room Brazilian Court gives off a glamorous, British Colonial feel -- the courtyards feature tinkling fountains, the lobby is decorated with gorgeous rough wood ceilings and rich colors, and mahogany accents warm up the 80 elegant rooms. The property also features some brand-name cachet -- a restaurant from famous chef Daniel Boulud and a salon from celebrity stylish Frederic Fekkai. Those hoping to be directly on the beach may consider staying at the trendy Omphoy, however, as accessing beaches nearby requires crossing busy roads.

Omphoy Ocean Resort

Omphoy Ocean Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 134-room boutique hotel has a cool, chic vibe, with lots of dark wood in the rooms and lobby, dim mood lighting, and a private beach with food and drink service. Situated between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, the hotel has beautiful views all around (but be wary of the Intracoastal Waterway View rooms, because some offer just a tiny glimpse of the water). The renowned restaurant from celebrity chef Michelle Bernstein is a local hot spot, and access to two private golf courses is a nice perk. But the pool, despite its stylish design, is oddly located in front of the hotel, across the parking lot.
