Shangri-La Hotel Paris

Shangri-La Hotel Paris Rating: 5.0 Pearls

Guests at the 101-room Shangri-La Hotel Paris receive the five-star treatment in this former palace, built by Napoleon for his grandnephew. Because of its meticulous restoration and attention to detail, Shangri-La feels like a boutique hotel, or a museum in which you can spend the night. Two Michelin-star restaurants and the unparalleled views of the Eiffel Tower from balconies -- and even from some guest room bathtubs -- mean Shangri-La truly lives up to its reputation as a top luxury stay.

Hotel Fouquet's Barriere

Hotel Fouquet's Barriere Rating: 5.0 Pearls

Located on the Champs Élysées, the Fouquet's Barrière is one of the most famous and exclusive luxury hotels in Paris. It has a slightly modernized Haussmann-style exterior, while interior design combines baroque, surrealist, and classic style elements with contemporary flair. Sophisticated rooms start at 400 square feet, and black marble bathrooms have separate showers and tubs as well as TVs in the mirrors. The extensive features include three restaurants (one Michelin-starred), an upscale spa, and a gorgeous indoor swimming pool. The hotel deserves its five-star status, but this level of luxury comes at a very high price.

Hotel Plaza Athenee

Hotel Plaza Athenee Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The world-renowned luxury hotel Plaza Athenee -- a part of the Dorchester Collection -- is synonymous with Parisian elegance and good taste. Iconic red awnings and chestnut trees welcome guests to the historic setting, on the upscale Avenue Montaigne location with direct views of the Eiffel Tower. It's all about luxury here, inside and out. The avenue is lined with high-end shops such as Christian Dior (guests have access to the Dior Institute for a full range of quality beauty and spa treatments), Prada, and Chanel. And inside, the 146 rooms and 45 suites are decorated in classic Art Deco style with modern touches like flat-screen TVs and marble baths. With six distinct restaurants, a large fitness center, and a can't-miss daily breakfast in a leafy garden, the Plaza Athenee doesn't miss a beat. But it comes at a high price -- and Wi-Fi isn't even included in that cost.

Pullman Paris Bercy

Pullman Paris Bercy Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Pullman Paris Bercy is a large upscale hotel located in Bercy, a quiet area away from the hustle and bustle of central Paris, but offering easy access to restaurants, shops, and bars. With 20 fully equipped meeting rooms, a fitness center, and a bar for after-work drinks, this property is clearly geared towards business travelers. But its spacious, contemporary rooms with flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, Nespresso machines, and floor-to-ceiling windows; quick, easy access via metro to major Paris attractions; and solid restaurant make it a good pick for tourists as well.

Les Jardins de la Villa

Les Jardins de la Villa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 33-room Les Jardins de la Villa is a boutique hotel with contemporary style in a quiet location. Stylish rooms are a good size for Paris standards, and are equipped with great extras such as free on-demand movies, free Wi-Fi, and Nespresso machines. They strike a good balance between practical amenities and fun touches (pops of bright color, avant-garde headboards), and feature luxurious bathrooms with walk-in showers (pricier rooms also have separate soaking tubs). Hotel highlights include the two-person hammam, beautiful winter garden, and convenient honesty bar in the evenings. While breakfast is expensive and the location is a little out of the way, it is a good pick for amenities and style.

Mon Hotel

Mon Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This boutique hotel is a beacon of style on an otherwise quiet and nondescript street near L'Arc de Triomphe. The Mon Hotel pays homage to pop culture, with black and white photography of iconic celebrities like Marilyn Monroe lining the walls and funky chandeliers hanging from the lobby ceiling. There are only 36 rooms here, taking up six floors, and they're all just as stylish as the lobby, with crisp white linens and modern amenities such as flat-screen TVs and iPod docks. Higher tier rooms have more amenities, including balconies/terraces (some with seating) and Nespresso machines. The Mon Restaurant/Bar is multi-use and serves breakfast buffet in the morning, and small plates during the day. In the evening, candles are lit and lounge music plays to silent black-and-white films on a giant screen -- a cool vibe for a pre- or post-dinner cocktail. Quieter guests need not worry --the joint closes at midnight, so there's no late-night party scene. The hotel also has a spa, Turkish bath, and small fitness center.

Hotel Apostrophe Rive Gauche

Hotel Apostrophe Rive Gauche Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Located on the Left Bank and just a hop, skip, and a jump to Luxembourg Gardens, this boutique hotel has 16 artsy rooms that feature distinct themes -- like the "Musique" room, which has a hand-painted musical mural on the wall. It's not a place for conformists -- even the exterior facade is painted in a tree design, making it stand out among its more traditional neighbors. The rooms are very modern, with iPod docks, CD/DVD players, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms meld into the rooms (with separate water closets) and come with powerful showers or whirlpool tubs. There's also a restaurant and bar here, but there are tons of other dining options just outside. All in all, it's a great choice for those looking for something different but central -- though travelers looking for a true Parisian experience won't find it here.

Hotel Montalembert

Hotel Montalembert Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This oh-so-chic boutique hotel in the heart of Saint Germain's shopping district has 56 rooms and suites in a Parisian house-like setting. Exuding a posh atmosphere (with prices to match), Montalembert's decor combines high design with an understated palette of black, taupe, gray and bronze. The gourmet restaurant changes its menu monthly and has a sidewalk terrace -- perfect for people-watching in warmer months. In cooler months, the Library Bar is a cozy spot for impromptu meetings by the fireplace. Rooms are stylish with original artwork on the walls, striped carpets and crisp linens. Amenities include flat-screen TVs and iPod/iPad docks, bathrobes and toiletries from L'Occitane (suites come with Nespresso machines.) Breakfast, for a fee, can be served in the breakfast room or in rooms upon request. There is not a spa on-site, but higher-tier rooms can schedule in-room massages. The hotel is dog-friendly, and Wi-Fi is free.

InterContinental Paris Avenue Marceau

InterContinental Paris Avenue Marceau Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This historic Parisian building near Champs Elysees -- once a private mansion of Comte de Breteuil, and formerly known as the Crowne Plaza hotel -- is now owned by the InterContinental brand. But the property doesn't feel like a chain, offering 55 rooms and stylish boutique design by Bruno Borrione. Well-dressed guests linger in the communal areas, which include a lounge, and outdoor terrace surrounded by potted plants and classic architecture. The attached jazz-themed restaurant serves continental breakfast in the mornings and international gourmet cuisine for lunch and dinner. Rooms are modern and bright, with red accents, black and white ceiling murals, iPod/iPad docks, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and flat-screen TVs. Bathrooms -- also impressive -- include sliding doors, deep sinks, shower/tub combos and Hermes toiletries. A number of features were provided with business travelers in mind, including the high-tech meeting space and business corner, which are decorated with hip wall murals and atmospheric lighting. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout.

Hotel Pershing Hall

Hotel Pershing Hall Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Hotel Pershing Hall is located in the heart of the Golden Triangle. This beautiful 18th century building is home to the trendy Restaurant Pershing and a popular lounge. An indoor courtyard with retractable roof and vertical garden is a highlight here, along with a small fitness center and spa. While there are some great freebies -- including breakfast, Wi-Fi, and bottled water -- rooms at the lower floors experience significant noise from the bar and lounge downstairs. Rooms are stylish and sleek, and bathrooms have walk-in showers (some have soaking tubs), but some guests complain that the price point is high for the quality of rooms and service.
