Hotel Rose

Hotel Rose Rating: 3.5 Pearls

When it comes to location in Portland, the 140-room Hotel Rose's spot is tough to beat. Perched along the Willamette River in Downtown Portland, this hotel is just a stone's throw away from Pioneer Square and the MAX -- the city's main public transportation line. Some rooms have pretty views, while others look onto busy (and loud) streets or the concrete parking lot. Hotel Rose, a Pineapple Hospitality property, is a great deal, though, when compared to nearby hotels, and offers clean (but small) rooms with IKEA-esque furnishings, as well as modern bathrooms with walk-in showers. Tech features include flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and free Wi-Fi. Amenities are few, but there's a small fitness center and the on-site restaurant, Bottle + Kitchen, offers creative dishes in a modern atmosphere.
Inn at Northrup Station

Inn at Northrup Station Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The Inn at Northrup Station, located in the Northwest district, is an all-suites boutique known for its bright, quirky 70s-style decor. The lobby features a hot pink, studded front desk lit by funky lamps, and the breakfast area is a scramble of bright, striped furniture. The spacious suites have abstract local art, and everything from the walls to the bedding to the couches are bold in color. All suites also have kitchenettes, big flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. An attractive rooftop terrace is full of colorful furniture. Freebies such as weekly Wednesday wine tastings and streetcar tickets add value, but there are some complaints about thin walls and street noise, and free parking can be limited.
Nordic Motel

Nordic Motel Rating: 2.0 Pearls

Unprepossessing from the outside, the low-lying 24-room Nordic Motel offers some of the cheapest lodgings in Portland. The well-maintained rooms have mini-fridges, microwaves, air-conditioning, and 32-inch or larger flat-screen TVs with premium HBO and Showtime channels, DVD players, and free Wi-Fi. Suites include kitchens with stoves and full-size refrigerators but no cooking utensils. Decor consists of blond-wood furnishings, gaudy, low-quality quilted bedspreads, striped carpeting, and small tables (some rooms have leather armchairs). They're clean and cozy but nothing fancy. Free coffee is served daily in the reception area, and fax and copy services are available, along with free parking.
