Excellence Riviera Cancun

Excellence Riviera Cancun Rating: 4.5 Pearls

This adults-only resort lives up to the Excellence name, offering the standard amenities of the luxury chain: multiple attractive pools, numerous dining options, dozens of activities, and a solid spa with beachside treatment huts. The abundance of marble and columns throughout the property might be a bit too ostentatious for some, but it's definitely impressive -- as are the rooms. The rooms feature Jacuzzis and open bathrooms, which shouldn't be a problem for most visitors choosing an adults-only resort. All have terraces or balconies, and a gorgeous stretch of beach is right outside the door.
Secrets Silversands Riviera Cancun

Secrets Silversands Riviera Cancun Rating: 4.5 Pearls

With a minimum guest age of 18, anyone looking for a romantic getaway can book the 433-room Secrets Silversands Riviera without fear of rambunctious kids or noisy families. The spacious, clean rooms and suites have crisp, modern decor with flat-screen TVs (though no iPod docks) -- but be on notice that the Swim-out Suites are actually a short walk and then swim out. The beach is smaller and rockier than many hotels in Cancun, but the incredible pools that sprawl the entire property offer ample swimming space (think lazy river meets infinity pool). Just don't plan on venturing out too much: The hotel has a fairly remote location -- which is a perk if you want to avoid the tourist-party mecca of the Hotel Zone.
El Dorado Royale

El Dorado Royale Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The El Dorado Royale is an adults-only resort with a whopping 450 acres of tropical jungle along the Riviera Maya. There are 13 pools in total -- an important aspect, as the ocean bottom is too rocky for most to enjoy. The resort calls itself a "gourmet" all-inclusive, and offers a dizzying array of restaurants (all with dress codes), as well as bars, nightlife, spa treatments, and on-site activities. There are three total sister properties in this area, and the Royale is the most basic -- though rooms still feel luxurious with balconies or terraces, walk-in showers, whirlpool tubs, bathrobes, and stocked minibars. The resort is attached to the newer Casitas section which has additional amenities such as outdoor showers and private plunge pools.
Azul Sensatori Hotel, by Karisma

Azul Sensatori Hotel, by Karisma Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The ultimate family getaway, the all-inclusive 438-room Azul Sensatori mega-resort offers a fabulous kids' club, with fairly modern amenities, lots of fun colors and spaces, and even a life-size Dora the Explorer running around. For the adults, the spa is airy and luxurious with soothing decor. On the hotel's website, the beach looks stunning, but in reality it is full of seaweed and rocks, making it not the greatest place to swim. It is, however, still a great place to rent some kayaks, play beach sports, and get a golden Mexico tan. Fortunately for those looking to swim, the winding lazy river pool weaves around the property, which many swim-up rooms border. Rooms are large, bright, and luxurious, some with private balconies or large Jacuzzis. Although there are hardly any restaurants or non-beach activities in the immediate area, on-site restaurants (including the 12-course, exclusive Le Chique, and Mojito Lounge, with 31 specialty mojitos) and hotel-oriented activities offer plenty to keep vacationers busy.
Azul Beach Hotel

Azul Beach Hotel Rating: 4.5 Pearls

This 97-room all-inclusive resort feels more like an upscale beach community -- complete with thatched roofs and quaint seaside cabanas. Rooms are spacious, with airy island-style designs and lots of luxurious touches, like deep-dish sinks, flat-screen TVs, and private patios or balconies. Some suites are swim-up, which border the gorgeous pool linking a group of suites at ground level. The four on-site restaurants offer a decent variety to guests, including a bar dedicated solely to tequila, though those staying for more than an extended weekend may find the options a bit limited. But families will appreciate that the restaurants offer kid-friendly options, and the daily kids' club -- a bright, fun space with tons of games and toys -- is a great place for children to hang out while adults dine or visit the spa.
El Dorado Casitas Royale

El Dorado Casitas Royale Rating: 4.5 Pearls

This peaceful adults-only resort, located along a white, sandy beach in the Riviera Maya, is geared toward romantic getaways (think honeymoons, anniversaries, and vow renewals). Each group of casitas has its own pool area that connects to a lazy river, and there are 13 public pools in total -- which is nice, because the ocean bottom is too rocky for most guests to enjoy. This all-inclusive resort offers a dizzying array of restaurants, bars, nightlife, spa treatments, and on-site activities to keep guests busy. When in need of an escape, the tour desk arranges off-site excursions, or guests can take a shuttle service to visit Cancun or Playa del Carmen. Casitas have romantic touches such as wood-beamed ceilings, canopy beds, and outdoor showers, and the private patios can be curtained off for afternoon siestas on the day beds. For top-tier amenities, Presidential Suites have kitchenettes, hammocks, larger pools, and direct ocean views.
Zoetry Paraiso de la Bonita Riviera Maya

Zoetry Paraiso de la Bonita Riviera Maya Rating: 4.5 Pearls

With only 90 suites, the Zoetry Paraiso offers a romantic, wellness-centric boutique experience in the Mayan Riviera. The unique layouts of the suites offers different experiences to guests, including Terrace Suites with small bath-side indoor gardens, and Plunge Pool Suites with small personal outdoor pools. Even though warm, Mediterranean style is a bit different in each room type, all are spacious with comfortable furnishings and Bulgari toiletries. Some tube TVs are begging for an update, however. The pool area and beach are relaxed with double-wide lounge chairs (perfect for couples), and the on-site dining keeps the resort's wellness theme alive with delicious, healthy meals. Included amenities not standard at most all-inclusive resorts, such as a "welcome" bottle of tequila, daily bottle of champagne, a one-hour Catamaran sunset sail, three-times-daily maid service, and private chauffeured airport transfers, make this resort a standout among Puerto Morelos' finest properties (though expect the price to reflect that).
Desire Pearl Resort & Spa, Riviera Maya

Desire Pearl Resort & Spa, Riviera Maya Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Desire Pearl (formerly the Ceiba del Mar) is a couples-only, clothing-optional, all-inclusive resort located on a beautiful white-sand beach right outside quiet Puerto Morelos. It draws a range of young and middle-aged couples (strictly heterosexual) looking for some adult fun in the sun. It is racy, but somewhat quieter and younger than its sister property, the Desire Resort & Spa Riviera Maya. Rooms are large and airy, with cute country-influenced decor (plaid bed runners, blue pastel fabrics), balconies or patios, and modern amenities, such as flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and free Wi-Fi.
Now Jade Riviera Cancun

Now Jade Riviera Cancun Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Now Jade Riviera Cancun is a 550-room megaresort that manages to be both family-friendly and romantic. The hotel's location in low-key Puerto Morelos helps, while its chic spa and unique decor distinguish the resort from its competitors in nearby Cancun. Also, the adults-only pool here is not restricted to Preferred Club guests, which sets this hotel apart from sister property Now Sapphire. All units are suites with ample space (especially the bathrooms), and the use of a vibrant color palette helps avoid the dreaded "generic hotel" vibe. The private Jacuzzi tubs are also a nice touch, with many located on outdoor balconies. The biggest drawback is the beach, which is smaller and less impressive than many others in the area.
Now Sapphire Riviera Cancun All Inclusive

Now Sapphire Riviera Cancun All Inclusive Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 496-room Now Sapphire is a sprawling complex directly on a white-sand beach outside Puerto Morelos. The property features the standard Cancun resort amenities -- free non-motorized water sports, a wide array of dining options, a pleasant spa with various treatment options, and an impressive pool. Suites are massive (starting at 520 square feet) and feature elegant, contemporary decor, marble floors, and up-to-date amenities such as flat-screen TVs and iPod docks. However, it’s far from tourist attractions, and Wi-Fi fees can leave guests feeling nickel-and-dimed.
