SOFO CasaBlanca Hotel

SOFO CasaBlanca Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The draw of SOFO CasaBlanca Hotel is its location -- right in the middle of historic Old San Juan, near countless restaurants, nightclubs, and shops. But once you get past the funky, chic decor of the lobby, the hallways are worn and musty, and the rooms -- despite the cute, eclectic decor -- are on the small side, with thin walls, tiny bathrooms (that have temperamental water pressure and temperature), and little light. Perks like free breakfast and Internet add value, but it's worth comparing rates with The Gallery Inn and Villa Herencia.
Doubletree by Hilton San Juan

Doubletree by Hilton San Juan Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 184-room Doubletree by Hilton is one of the top hotels for its price in Condado. Though not directly on the beach, the hotel is a short walk from the sand and features a tropical-themed pool area. Rooms are large, with mini-fridges and microwaves, and the decor throughout the hotel is sleek and modern.
Radisson Ambassador Plaza Hotel & Casino San Juan

Radisson Ambassador Plaza Hotel & Casino San Juan Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Prices may be low, but the 233-room Radisson Ambassador Plaza Hotel & Casino in Condado is in dire need of a renovation: Gold and chrome fixtures in the lobby and casino scream "Vegas in the 80s," and the rooms, though clean, have dated decor and, in some, old tube TVs. The fitness center is adequate, the rooftop pool is small, and the beach is a block away. The Courtyard by Marriot Isla Verde has a beautiful beach on-site, so it's worth comparing rates.
Verdanza Hotel

Verdanza Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This mid-range hotel is nothing like the nearby luxury properties in ritzy Isla Verde, but it's a block from a sandy beach, and has 222 bright rooms, some with pool views and small balconies. The contemporary decor is nothing special, with plain wooden furniture and muted colors, but all rooms come with iPod docks and flat-screen TVs. Property highlights include the three solid restaurants and wine bar with daily tastings, a nice pool area with a water play feature for kids, and an airy fitness center overlooking the rooftop terrace.
San Juan Water Beach Club Hotel

San Juan Water Beach Club Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 80-room Water Club offers great value in ritzy Isla Verde, San Juan. It has all of the beach vacation essentials: a location almost right on the beach (you have to take a small pathway by the parking lot), two on-site restaurants, a rooftop pool, and bright rooms. The rooms are contemporary and sparse, with just a blue accent wall and little furniture, but they do have flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, free Wi-Fi, and coffeemakers. Hotel features aren't as impressive as at the more expensive properties nearby: the pool and fitness center are both very small, and there's no full spa (although beachside and in-room massages are available). But if your priorities are access to a great beach and solid rooms, it's hard to do much better for the price in San Juan.
Villa Montana Beach Resort

Villa Montana Beach Resort Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Villa Montana is a well-maintained, low-key property in the northwest corner of Puerto Rico. The rooms and villas are somewhat sparsely decorated, but decidedly nice with flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, comfortable bedding and large patios or balconies. There's plenty of surrounding nature, attractive outdoor pools, and a gorgeous secluded private beach on this 30-acre property. Just keep in mind that while there's plenty of nearby outdoor activity, there is very little to do in the area at night.
Acacia Boutique Hotel

Acacia Boutique Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This small, laid-back, mid-range hotel has 22 rooms along a quiet residential street in San Juan about a mile from the Condado tourist hub and a block from the beach. Charming interiors and basic Spanish-style rooms are just starting to show some age. Some rooms have private balconies (and partial ocean views), but anyone is welcome to enjoy the rooftop deck -- a great place to BYO drinks before dinner. The first-floor restaurant serves breakfast and then re-opens again for dinner with a gourmet menu and decent wine list. For more restaurant and nightlife options, just head west along Avenida Ashford via foot or taxi. Guests also have access to the (small) pool and bar at the sister property down the block. Parking in this area might be a challenge.
Casa Condado Hotel

Casa Condado Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This no-frills hotel has 24 clean, sparsely decorated rooms, with wooden floors, small flat-screen TVs, and loud AC units. Bathrooms are nothing special either, with large, concrete-floor showers and no counter space. The hotel itself has no amenities whatsoever -- no elevator, no fitness center, no pool -- but its location in the heart of the glitzy Condado neighborhood, a block from the beach, is convenient. Also, there’s a pleasant terrace where the (free) continental breakfast is served, free Wi-Fi in the common areas, and a nice sushi restaurant.
BEST WESTERN PLUS Condado Palm Inn & Suites

BEST WESTERN PLUS Condado Palm Inn & Suites Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This mid-range Best Western Plus hotel in Condado has 151 rooms, including 33 one-bedroom suites that are just as big as apartments (at one time they were). It hits all the marks of the brand's PLUS line, and rooms have contemporary decor, work desks, microwaves, and mini-fridges. Leisure guests will likely appreciate the outdoor pool and close access to the beach. Free breakfast is served daily, and Coco’s Lounge opens for drinks at night (don't miss the manager's weekly party). The location is spitting distance to several restaurants and bars as well as La Concha's casino -- great for pedestrians, but definitely not idea for those seeking an quiet night's sleep. Other amenities include the fitness and business centers, laundry, and parking.
Hotel Miramar

Hotel Miramar Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Hotel Miramar has large (if plain) rooms with mini-fridges and microwaves, as well as free Wi-Fi and a (limited) free breakfast. It's a 15-minute walk to both Condado Beach and the Puerto Rico Convention Center, but the hotel is in a less touristy area on a traffic-heavy street. Many leisure travelers will prefer either to stay in charming Old San Juan, or closer to the sand in Condado.
