Garza Blanca Preserve, Resort & Spa

Garza Blanca Preserve, Resort & Spa Rating: 5.0 Pearls

This luxury resort stands on a secluded stretch of beach on Bahia Banderas’ south shore, which offers stunning views of the ocean and jungle-covered hills that surround it. Built on the site of a former hotel that was the playground of Hollywood stars in the 1960s, the Garza Blanca features spacious guest rooms, an exquisite pool, private beach, and a gourmet restaurant with extensive wine cellar and tequila tasting room.
Villa Premiere Hotel & Spa

Villa Premiere Hotel & Spa Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Open only to guests ages 16 and older, Villa Premiere offers the best of two Puerto Vallarta worlds: it’s both beachfront all-inclusive and urban boutique. One of the few beaches near town -- Playa Camarones -- is directly in front of the hotel, and downtown Puerto Vallarta is just seven blocks away. Even with its small size, the 89-room Villa has an attractive all-inclusive package -- a compact but still luxurious version of what you get at many of the mega-sized resorts several miles north, out of town. An added bonus: it’s a pretty little place with whimsical artwork throughout.
Casa Velas Hotel Boutique

Casa Velas Hotel Boutique Rating: 4.5 Pearls

There are neighborhoods in Puerto Vallarta that feel like Palm Springs or Beverly Hills, and the all-inclusive Casa Velas inhabits one of them. Lush, manicured gardens and streets, high-priced, terra cotta tile-roofed houses and condos, and the green grass of a well-tended golf course define the locale. The 80-room adults-only hotel is perfectly situated amidst this quiet luxury. With a gated entry, a friendly, (mostly) bilingual staff, and gorgeous public spaces and rooms that more than meet the challenge posed by the posh ambience, Casa Velas is a great pick for those who like it luxe but informal.
Amaca Hotel

Amaca Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

A boutique, adults-only option in the gay Olas Altas neighborhood, the Amaca Hotel is decorated in traditional Mexican style with bright white walls, peeping palm fronds, and tile floors. The outstanding feature here is a rooftop lounge and small pool area with sweeping views of Banderas Bay below. While the 22-rooms offer hammocks, balconies, and walk-in showers, some guests complain about a lack of free Wi-Fi and the absence of bathroom doors.
Casa Cupula

Casa Cupula Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This destination for gay travelers is an eclectic, amusing, and comfortable little charmer. With just 21 rooms built into four adjoining houses on a steep, winding street just south of Old Town, Cupula is unique among Puerto Vallarta properties -- an eccentric yet comfortable collection of individual parts that add up to a totally inviting whole. Throw in great views, two sexy pools, a popular restaurant, in-room spa treatments, and a modern well-lit fitness center, and you have a complete adults-only package that is hard to beat.
Hotel Portonovo Plaza

Hotel Portonovo Plaza Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This 45-room budget-friendly boutique hotel comes sharply dressed with some attitude and style, but little in the way of amenities (at least compared with the larger megaresorts that permeate Puerto Vallarta's more distant zones). There's a decent rooftop restaurant with outdoor seating and city views, a nice-size rooftop pool looking out toward the ocean, and a basic-use (read: tiny) fitness center. The rooms range from small to smaller, and their views are far from inspiring -- but it's what lies outside the hotel doors that counts. The beach, the Malecon, and the area's most popular dining, nightlife, and shopping are all within a short walk.
Casa Anita and Corona Del Mar

Casa Anita and Corona Del Mar Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This ruggedly charming boutique hotel offers sweeping views of Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay, and the enticements of Old Town Puerto Vallarta are close at hand. Rugged is meant literally here: With two multistoried buildings climbing a steep hillside, labyrinthine stairways, and no elevators, it's a bit of work getting around -- especially if you add in the hike up from the beach. Ultimately, the place seduces with space. The 28 suites are generously scaled, with large decks, and the wonderful views place the city in the foreground against a background of sea and sky.
Hotel Rio Malecon Puerto Vallarta

Hotel Rio Malecon Puerto Vallarta Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The 47-room Hotel Rio Malecon Puerto Vallarta is an excellent mid-range option for families and couples who want a more authentic hotel stay in downtown Puerto Vallarta than what's offered at the massive resorts prevalent in the area. Location is key: Hotel Rio is surrounded by shops and restaurants, and just one block to the beach of Playa de Los Muertos. Luxe and Superior level rooms are stylish and convenient with some kitchenettes, though the Standard Rooms have tube TVs and dated decor. Coexist Cafe is a nice spot for breakfast or lunch by the landscaped courtyard swimming pool. Rates are low and the service is helpful, though overall this is a low-frills, humble property.
Playa Conchas Chinas

Playa Conchas Chinas Rating: 3.0 Pearls

For budget travelers, the 20-room Playa Conchas Chinas can be a cheap, intimate, and even charming option. The upsides include the a small pool area surrounded by lush greenery and a quaint beachfront location (though the beach disappears at high tide). Rooms, however, are a bit mixed. Though most are spacious, with classic Mexican style (think: tiling and bright colors) and great ocean views, expect some maintenance issues (such as missing knobs on furniture and balcony doors that don't close all the way). Some bathrooms are small and smell like sewage. Though kitchenettes are available in many units, there's no grocery store close by so cooking in will prove difficult; the adjacent restaurants are both popular.
Playa Los Arcos Hotel Beach Resort & Spa

Playa Los Arcos Hotel Beach Resort & Spa Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Los Arcos benefits from a prime location: It's planted on Puerto Vallarta's main beach, Playa del Sol, and is right smack in the middle of the Romantic Zone. The mid-range boutique style looks like a throwback to another time and emits a true Mexican personality. But many rooms in this mid-range hotel are worn, and on the small side. It's a relatively small property, and perhaps a little short on amenities, but for those who want an authentic Mexican urban resort experience, this is great choice.
