CasaMagna Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa

CasaMagna Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Much like the other sprawling resorts that line the beach in the swanky Marina Vallarta golf community, the CasaMagna Marriott features top-notch restaurants, pools, and meeting rooms, as well as lovely guest rooms and suites that feature modern amenities and contemporary furnishings. Housed in two towers, this upscale hotel is memorable primarily for its sumptuous Ohtli Spa and adjacent fitness center with indoor lap pool. Somewhat removed from Puerto Vallarta's nightlife scene, it is a great spot for travelers who want to unwind away from the hustle and bustle of downtown.

Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center

Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center Rating: 4.0 Pearls

With 475 guest rooms distributed across 15 stories on a beachfront near downtown, the Sheraton Buganvilias is a big, busy operation -- yet it's invitingly tranquil in places as well. There is ample lounge seating dotting the lush grounds, and a nice spa offers a relaxing reprieve. With an attractive free-form pool, multiple restaurants, expansive meeting space, and easy access to the charms of Vallarta, this is a great spot for those who like the action close at hand, but also feel the need to escape the hustle. Just don't expect to escape the hustle with a serene beachfront -- the beach here is rocky, public, and teeming with vendors.

The Westin Resort & Spa Puerto Vallarta

The Westin Resort & Spa Puerto Vallarta Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Think pink. Well, yellow, too, and a few other intense shades that add more than a splash of color to this 280-room hotel. The Westin is also distinctive architecturally, as it is housed in a cluster of buildings with varying heights and sizes. This beachside property takes a bit of getting used to, as its sprawling scale and bright color scheme may seem overwhelming at first. Some standout features include the free-form pool complex and the property's extensive art collection. It offers all the amenities expected at an upscale resort, but be prepared to pay fees for most of them.

Sunset Plaza Beach Resort and Spa

Sunset Plaza Beach Resort and Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Curvaceous and bright, this upscale sister of the two older Pelican resorts nearby features fabulous views, as this 15-story hotel looms modern and colorful over the low-rise properties around it. Guest rooms and suites are contemporary, stylish, and comfortably spacious -- and all have balconies that overlook the beach below. The hot tub decks and poolside lounge areas also offer spectacular ocean views, with some guests preferring these serene spaces to the narrow beach that is often crowded with vendors.

Barcelo Puerto Vallarta

Barcelo Puerto Vallarta Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Featuring gorgeously groomed jungle grounds and blue-tiled pools with beautiful bay views, this all-inclusive resort towers above the secluded Mismaloya Beach, which was made famous as the location for the Elizabeth Taylor movie, "Night of the Iguana." Packed with spacious suites and numerous amenities, the sheer massiveness of this upscale Barcelo property may make its beachside location feel a bit crowded. (Some may feel its presence ruins what made Mismaloya Beach special in the first place.)

Dreams Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa

Dreams Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This upscale Dreams property sits on a sweet private cove on Banderas Bay, making it a great romantic spot. Every single room and suite has an amazing ocean view (some with private balconies and Jacuzzis outside), but the rooms in the Old Tower have not been updated and are showing wear and tear. It's a true all-inclusive -- you won't be slapped with any surprising mini-bar fees -- but beware of staff trying to upsell you, especially when you check in.

Villa Del Palmar Beach Resort & Spa

Villa Del Palmar Beach Resort & Spa Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The three Villa properties, including this one, are timeshares first and hotels second -- so be prepared for an aggressive sales pitch upon checking in. Get past the lobby and you'll find a typical upper-middle-range beach resort with multiple pools, a few dining options, tennis courts, a spa and fitness center. Be warned: Some of the rooms are outdated, and guests say the food is sub-par. But the location -- right by a bus stop that takes you downtown in minutes, and close to the airport -- is prime.

Lindo Mar Resort

Lindo Mar Resort Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Tucked into a hillside on Conchas Chinas Beach -- an exclusive southern area of Puerto Vallarta -- Lindo Mar in Spanish means "pretty sea." And this resort was aptly named, with stunning ocean views from every angle and offering some of the best sunsets around. The resort is a timeshare property, though, so it can book up quickly during high season. The entire resort is comprised of condominium-style suites -- featuring fully equipped kitchens, living rooms, dining areas, one to three bedrooms, and ocean-view balconies -- which is a nice change of pace from the megaresorts that are found dotting the area's Hotel Zone. The hotel's restaurant La Playita is worth a visit on its own; it's built onto the rocks directly above the sea -- so close that if you’re seated on the water side, you can almost touch the waves. At high tide, the hotel’s little beach simply disappears. But ample lounge space can be found at the nearby pool and decks.

Samba Vallarta - All Inclusive

Samba Vallarta - All Inclusive Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Compared to the many massive hotels at the north end of Nuevo Vallarta, the Samba Vallarta’s 183-room, four-story Spanish colonial-style building feels pleasantly small-scale -- and the pools and beach tend to be less crowded than elsewhere. The clean rooms have basic, contemporary beach decor (light woods, turquoise bed skirts and runners), and the general ambience of the property is family-friendly and relaxed. For those who want to go the all-inclusive route but don’t want a megaresort experience, this affordable mid-range property is a fine choice.

Buenaventura Grand Hotel & Spa

Buenaventura Grand Hotel & Spa Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The spacious lobby and ocean views give this 234-room hotel the feel of an “out of town” resort; but no, the Buenaventura is so close to downtown that the bustling Malecon boardwalk -- lined with sculptures, shops, and restaurants -- is just a five-minute walk away. Although marketed as a luxury property, it is actually a 3.5-pearl hotel with typical mid-range amenities, including a tiny spa. Overlooking a narrow stretch of beach and just a stroll away from Puerto Vallarta's thriving nightlife scene, it's a great pick for those who want an oceanfront location close to the downtown action.
