Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe

Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The 1,600-room Palace Deluxe is the main resort at the Barcelo Bavaro complex, and features tons of on-site features including an attractive spa, a 24-hour casino, four pools, and 11 restaurants. But aside from substantial lines at the front desk, the guest capacity of the resort rarely shows: Guests do not have to search for spots at the pools and beach, and reservation requirements keep restaurants well organized. Couples, families, and partiers all mingle seamlessly at the property. Though the adults-only sister property has a slightly more romantic vibe, plenty of couples opt to stay here as it is where most of the features are located. The hotel's rooms feature iPod docks, flat-screen TVs, and attractive, sleek decor.

Paradisus Punta Cana

Paradisus Punta Cana Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The largest of four Paradisus resorts in Punta Cana, this 683-room property still manages to feel uncrowded due to its expansive grounds. Guests can expect to walk or hitch rides on the regular shuttle service to get to the beach, pools, luxury spa, yoga studio and impressive restaurants around the resort; there are also bike stations for those who prefer to cycle. The beach doesn’t quiet down at night as it can at other resorts, but rather comes alive with a party scene appealing to both young and old. The Royal Service upgrade -- expect a sales pitch upon arrival -- allows access to the private lounge and a separate pool and beach area. The resort is a bit more luxurious -- and a bit pricier -- than the neighboring Bavaro Princess All Suites Resort and Iberostar Bavaro.

Secrets Royal Beach

Secrets Royal Beach Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The adults-only Secrets caters to honeymooners and couples, but of the more party-hearty variety: The resort offers numerous on-site bars as well as nightly entertainment. However, tranquility (and romance) can certainly be found in the kid-free restaurants, lazy river, and intimate spa, and all rooms feature balconies or terraces with large whirlpool tubs. Room decor is similar to, but a step above, that at the Now: Floral throws, bright furniture, accent walls, flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and large marble bathrooms all come together to make comfortable, if not particularly luxurious, accommodations. The resort lacks a golf course, but overall its a solid choice for couples looking to let loose -- and still enjoy a bit of romance.

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The massive, all-inclusive Hard Rock is a sleek option in Punta Cana, located on a gorgeous stretch of white-sand beach. Getting from one place to the other on the sprawling property can take some time, but the hotel provides a shuttle. In addition, the size allows the resort to have broad appeal -- it attracts families, couples, and partiers. The signature Hard Rock rocker vibe can be seen throughout the hotel, whether it be in the music-themed decor or the free guitar rentals. On-site amenities such as tennis, golf, and horseback riding help keep guests busy. There are plenty of dining options as well, including a restaurant from celebrity "Rock n' Roll Chef" Kerry Simon serving organic, California cuisine (opening in May 2013).

Riu Palace Macao

Riu Palace Macao Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The sole adults-only hotel on the five-resort Riu complex, the Macao has a generally upscale vibe that’s significantly more tranquil than its sister properties. There’s still the requisite poolside entertainment and loud music by the gorgeous, white-sand beach, but couple-friendly amenities (which the other properties lack) include name-brand liquor and a designated VIP section on the beach. While this all-inclusive features sleek rooms and fun nightly entertainment, many guests complain about the mediocre food and the long walk to the gym and spa.

Grand Palladium Bavaro Resort And Spa

Grand Palladium Bavaro Resort And Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 674-room Grand Palladium Bavaro is spread over spacious grounds (guests also have access to two sister properties) offering 15 bars, five buffets, and eight restaurants. Walking shoes are recommended, but family-friendly amenities, lower prices than some neighbors, and renovated rooms are the big draws. In 2014, the resort added 178 units including a swim-up option overlooking the beach (a great pick for honeymooners -- otherwise romantics may want to check out the adults-only Royal Turquesa next door). Kids and their parents, on the other hand, will appreciate the outstanding kids' club, but the beach can get crowded.

Majestic Colonial Punta Cana

Majestic Colonial Punta Cana Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This family-friendly all-inclusive resort with 658 suites has an attractive setting, affordable prices, and a compact layout (no shuttle) that puts everyone within walking distance to the beach. It's a popular place for Americans, and the resort can sometimes feel overrun by destination wedding groups. Food is not the highlight here (and reservations can be frustrating); the beach is the biggest draw, and there is also a large and lengthy pool area that runs the length of the resort, a number of bars, and a charismatic animation team. Rooms have classic, romantic style and marble bathrooms with jetted tubs (indoor or outdoor), but do show some wear and tear. Adults who choose to upgrade to the Colonial Club have access to a private lazy river pool and separate lounge for drinks and gourmet treats.

Riu Naiboa

Riu Naiboa Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Naiboa offers the least expensive rates of the five resorts on the Riu complex, and it is readily evident why; rooms are dated, food is bland, liquor is bottom-shelf, there are pesky fees for Wi-Fi, and the beach is a bit of a walk. But once on the sand, the resort proves to be a solid budget option, as the beach is absolutely gorgeous, and offers plenty of water sports and entertainment. Families will likely appreciate the kids’ club and large pool, although some find the poolside activities to be more of a noisy bother.

IFA Villas Bavaro Resort and Spa

IFA Villas Bavaro Resort and Spa Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Since its 2008 renovation, the IFA has brought a Jacuzzi bar, a huge lake-style pool, clean rooms, and the best pizza this side of Punta Cana to one of the greatest coasts in the D.R. There is a shuttle to the beach, but otherwise it is a 10-minute walk from the resort. Plus, the resort does all this at an uncommonly fair price.

Grand Palladium Punta Cana Resort & Spa

Grand Palladium Punta Cana Resort & Spa Rating: 3.5 Pearls

All rooms at the 451-room Punta Cana, part of an 1,825-room mega-resort complex, feature in-room Jacuzzis, but the real draws are the clean white-sand beach, access to four free-form pools, and eight reservation-free restaurants with some of the D.R.'s best all-inclusive fare -- a good value, if you don't mind scrounging for a rogue lounge chair.
