Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe

Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The 1,600-room Palace Deluxe is the main resort at the Barcelo Bavaro complex, and features tons of on-site features including an attractive spa, a 24-hour casino, four pools, and 11 restaurants. But aside from substantial lines at the front desk, the guest capacity of the resort rarely shows: Guests do not have to search for spots at the pools and beach, and reservation requirements keep restaurants well organized. Couples, families, and partiers all mingle seamlessly at the property. Though the adults-only sister property has a slightly more romantic vibe, plenty of couples opt to stay here as it is where most of the features are located. The hotel's rooms feature iPod docks, flat-screen TVs, and attractive, sleek decor.

Secrets Royal Beach

Secrets Royal Beach Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The adults-only Secrets caters to honeymooners and couples, but of the more party-hearty variety: The resort offers numerous on-site bars as well as nightly entertainment. However, tranquility (and romance) can certainly be found in the kid-free restaurants, lazy river, and intimate spa, and all rooms feature balconies or terraces with large whirlpool tubs. Room decor is similar to, but a step above, that at the Now: Floral throws, bright furniture, accent walls, flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and large marble bathrooms all come together to make comfortable, if not particularly luxurious, accommodations. The resort lacks a golf course, but overall its a solid choice for couples looking to let loose -- and still enjoy a bit of romance.

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The massive, all-inclusive Hard Rock is a sleek option in Punta Cana, located on a gorgeous stretch of white-sand beach. Getting from one place to the other on the sprawling property can take some time, but the hotel provides a shuttle. In addition, the size allows the resort to have broad appeal -- it attracts families, couples, and partiers. The signature Hard Rock rocker vibe can be seen throughout the hotel, whether it be in the music-themed decor or the free guitar rentals. On-site amenities such as tennis, golf, and horseback riding help keep guests busy. There are plenty of dining options as well, including a restaurant from celebrity "Rock n' Roll Chef" Kerry Simon serving organic, California cuisine (opening in May 2013).

Riu Palace Macao

Riu Palace Macao Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Riu Palace Macao is an adults-only, all-inclusive property on the northern end of Punta Cana. Rooms have white color palettes and pops of bright colors, plus up-to-date amenities -- such as free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs -- and balconies or small patios. The hotel features a great beach and a ton of all-inclusive features, including a free scuba diving lesson in the pool. The Riu has a group of loyal followers who come to drink the brand-name booze and party by the pool, but there are other similar options nearby worth checking out, including the Majestic Elegance and Barcelo Bavaro Palace.

Majestic Colonial Punta Cana

Majestic Colonial Punta Cana Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A giant pool, a wide selection of quality food, name-brand liquor, and a crowded but beautiful stretch of white-sand beach draw families, retirees, and young partiers alike. With 659 rooms, this kid-friendly resort is not intimate, and service is impersonal.

IFA Villas Bavaro Resort and Spa

IFA Villas Bavaro Resort and Spa Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Since its 2008 renovation, the IFA has brought a Jacuzzi bar, a huge lake-style pool, clean rooms, and the best pizza this side of Punta Cana to one of the greatest coasts in the D.R. There is a shuttle to the beach, but otherwise it is a 10-minute walk from the resort. Plus, the resort does all this at an uncommonly fair price.

Catalonia Bavaro Beach - All Inclusive

Catalonia Bavaro Beach - All Inclusive Rating: 3.5 Pearls

At 700 rooms, the Catalonia is one of the D.R.'s largest mega-resorts. It's fun, and roomy enough that guests can party at the big pool or lounge quietly at the beach. Rooms are big, too, each with a Jacuzzi tub, but food options, as at so many Dominican all-inclusives, are not great.

Grand Palladium Punta Cana Resort & Spa

Grand Palladium Punta Cana Resort & Spa Rating: 3.5 Pearls

All rooms at the 451-room Punta Cana, part of an 1,825-room mega-resort complex, feature in-room Jacuzzis, but the real draws are the clean white-sand beach, access to four free-form pools, and eight reservation-free restaurants with some of the D.R.'s best all-inclusive fare -- a good value, if you don't mind scrounging for a rogue lounge chair.

Grand Bahia Principe Punta Cana

Grand Bahia Principe Punta Cana Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Equipped with a beautiful beach, great pools, and large rooms with Jacuzzi tubs and pull-out sofas, the Gran Bahia Punta Cana is a family-friendly come-one-come-all version of its adults-only sister Gran Bahia Principe Ambar. But this overwhelmingly huge resort has spotty service and is plagued by frequent complaints of guests falling ill from the food, making it a less ideal pick.

Riu Palace Punta Cana

Riu Palace Punta Cana Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The top resort in a sprawling, five-hotel complex, the 612-room Riu Palace Punta Cana has access to some excellent pools, top-notch liquor, and a gorgeous, though especially crowded, beach. For the price, the rooms and food are subpar. Opt for nearby (and cheaper) Barcelo Premium Punta Cana instead.
