Vanderbilt Grace

Vanderbilt Grace Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Vanderbilt Grace is a 100-year-old mansion built by the Vanderbilt family that has been converted into a modern, elegant hotel. It's a luxury property, so accommodations here don't come cheap, but the rooms are well-appointed, the dining is first-class, and the location is prime -- close to Newport, but without the noise. A spa, a substantial fitness center, and two swimming pools round out the list of features. Plus, guests get plenty of free champagne -- when they check in, and at breakfast every morning.
Castle Hill Inn

Castle Hill Inn Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Castle Hill Inn was once the private summer home of a prominent marine biologist. Today, the 40-acre luxury property includes the original New England-style shingled mansion, along with private guest cottages, a beach, and a small marina. There are several different room types at Castle Hill, but all are outfitted with luxurious finishes such as hardwood floors and marble bathrooms. The hotel’s signature restaurant, the Castle Hill Dining Room, is highly regarded for its delectable seasonal menus and extensive wine list. Castle Hill is far from downtown Newport, and guests will pay a premium to stay here, but nightly rates do include free Wi-Fi, parking, breakfast, and afternoon tea. Travelers looking for a similar level of luxury closer to downtown should check out The Chanler at Cliff Walk, which often has comparable nightly rates.
The Ocean House

The Ocean House Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The Ocean House is a luxury resort, with the rates to match, located on a private white-sand beach in the sleepy coastal town of Watch Hill. The hotel offers a slew of amenities, including a full-service spa, large fitness center, indoor pool (that opens to the outdoors), and plenty of dining options, so there’s really no reason for guests to leave the hotel grounds -- which is good, because there’s not a lot in Watch Hill, aside from the cute little boutiques and shops on the main street.
Hotel Providence

Hotel Providence Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Hotel Providence is an 80-room boutique hotel centrally located in Providence's Arts and Entertainment District. The interior decor is a mix of traditional New England and European styles, though some may find the rooms more old-fashioned than upscale. But the restaurant and bar have a much more contemporary and sexy feel -- and thus draw a hip, stylish crowd. While its location means plenty of things to do, it also can mean lots of room noise in the summer and on weekends, and there's no pool (you'll find one at the Providence Marriott Downtown). Still, it's a popular site for weddings, and guests traveling with their dogs will likely appreciate the pet-friendly rooms and the "pet concierge" station in the lobby.
Omni Providence Hotel

Omni Providence Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A prime downtown location and immediate proximity to the city’s most popular tourist attractions make the four-pearl Omni Providence Hotel an ideal location from which to base any trip to Providence. The hotel’s numerous on-site amenities — including two restaurants, a coffee shop, small indoor pool, event spaces, large fitness center, gift shop, and access to shopping — all combine to create a resort-style property that offers more in one space than any hotel in the city. While a bit generic in design, rooms are quiet, clean, and many offer excellent downtown views.
Hotel Viking

Hotel Viking Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Opened in 1926 and most recently renovated in 2007, the Hotel Viking is a historic Newport property with charming period details and subtle Nordic accents. Located on Bellevue Avenue, the upscale Hotel Viking is close to Newport’s famed mansions, the lively shops and restaurants on Thames Street, and the gorgeous Cliff Walk. With a large indoor pool, beautiful spa, and over 13,000 square feet of meeting space, the hotel is ideal for any type of traveler, including families, couples, and those on business. Rooms are large with rich decor inspired by Newport’s Gilded Age, but bathrooms in the Newport wing are incredibly small. Though nightly rates tend to skyrocket in the summer months and there is a pesky nightly resort fee, staying at the Viking tends to be significantly cheaper than at other comparable options like the Castle Hill Inn or The Chanler at Cliff Walk, both of which are located on the water.
Ivy Lodge

Ivy Lodge Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Ivy Lodge, a sprawling Victorian mansion turned upscale bed-and-breakfast, is a place where guests can relive the opulence of Newport’s Gilded Age -- from the stunning oak entryway to each of the inn’s 12 individually decorated rooms. The owners of the Ivy Lodge, a husband and wife team, go out of their way to ensure guests enjoy their visit to Newport by offering city getaway packages, discounted tickets to area attractions, and local restaurant recommendations. They also serve a hot gourmet breakfast each morning as well as tea, coffee, and snacks throughout the day, all of which are free for guests. Wi-Fi and parking are also free, and the inn is within walking distance of the Newport mansions and the famous Cliff Walk. However, there are few other amenities, and the traditional Victorian decor might not be to everyone’s taste.
Forty 1 North

Forty 1 North Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This upscale, eco-friendly boutique hotel set on a marina attracts yacht owners by the dozens, and has a hip bar scene that brings in a trendy local clientele as well. The contemporary rooms are luxuriously appointed and decked out with all the latest technology, and the rates reflect that -- they start around $500 and go up into the thousands per night. But travelers who can afford it will enjoy gorgeous rooms and unparalleled marina views. However, amenities are few for the price -- the hotel lacks both a fitness center and spa.
Francis Malbone House Inn

Francis Malbone House Inn Rating: 4.0 Pearls

An 18th century Georgian mansion turned bed-and-breakfast, the 18 room Francis Malbone House Inn is loaded with upscale charm. Guest rooms are furnished with traditional Colonial pieces, including four-poster beds and wing-back chairs. All rooms have working fireplaces, but bathrooms vary greatly in size and features. Though there is no pool, spa, fitness center, or on-site restaurant here, the Francis Malbone does offer free parking, Wi-Fi, breakfast, and afternoon tea. Friendly innkeepers treat guests like family, and the hotel sees a great deal of repeat customers. However, there is a two-night minimum stay requirement on weekends, and children under the age of 12 are not permitted to stay at the inn. Guests who are looking for bigger amenities, like a pool, spa, fitness center, or on-site restaurant, should check out the nearby Hotel Viking. It’s a larger property, but still has some historic detailing.
The Chanler at Cliff Walk

The Chanler at Cliff Walk Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Mention to anyone in Newport that you’re staying at The Chanler at Cliff Walk, and you’ll likely be met with wide eyes and a serious nod of approval. The reaction is warranted, The Chanler, an upscale boutique with incredible ocean views, is nothing short of spectacular. Everything -- from the hotel’s mansion-like appearance, to its richly decorated rooms, to its acclaimed fine dining restaurant -- is superb. However, room rates are expensive, even in the off-season, and there is no pool, spa, or fitness center. Most rooms at The Chanler can only accommodate two people, and there is no elevator, making it difficult for guests traveling with small children or those with mobility issues. Travelers looking for more space can find it at Castle Hill Inn, which offers a similar level of luxury, often for comparable prices.
