Royal Rio Palace Hotel

Royal Rio Palace Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Royal Rio Palace is an inexpensive, all-inclusive option in the heart of Copacabana. It is conveniently located; just two blocks from the beach and one block from the nearest metro station (Cardeal Arcoverde). Each room features an LCD-TV, minibar, and safe. The bathrooms are quite spacious by Copacabana standards, and some come with bathtubs, but overall decor is bland. The hotel has a great rooftop swimming pool area with views. Adjacent to it is a pool bar, and a small, but modern, fitness center and steam room. The neighborhood is lively with bars, restaurants, shops, and theaters.
Royal Tulip Rio de Janeiro

Royal Tulip Rio de Janeiro Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Royal Tulip Rio de Janeiro is a four-pearl property across the street from the breathtakingly beautiful São Conrado beach. The hotel serves business clients and leisure travelers alike, and is well known for its quality conference facilities and meetings rooms. Rooms are comfortable and stylish, with sweeping ocean and Pedra da Gávea rock views from private balconies. The hotel has three restaurants and a huge rooftop swimming pool. The fitness center and kids' club go above-and-beyond what's usually found in Rio, and the lobby bar hosts occasional live music. Free Wi-Fi and a free breakfast buffet are nice extras. Expect a 20-minute drive from the tourist area of Copacabana. For some the distance is a perk, while others may feel it's too far away from the action. Note that the hotel is located near Rocinha, an area that can feel seedy.
Transamerica Prime Barra

Transamerica Prime Barra Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This four-pearl business hotel is located in a residential area in Barra da Tijuca that's closer to office parks than the beach. Elegant, Deluxe Rooms include kitchenettes and most have balconies with distant ocean views. There's a tropically landscaped swimming pool with a swim-up bar, two-story fitness center, and contemporary lobby bar. The restaurant serves a free breakfast buffet and a la carte lunch and dinner. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. This is a good pick for business travelers, but those who want fast access to the beach and restaurants should try Royal Rio Palace Hotel.
Hotel Marina Palace

Hotel Marina Palace Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 150-room Hotel Marina Palace is a towering, beachside property in the Leblon neighborhood of Rio De Janeiro, a pricey residential area with restaurants and shops. The upscale hotel has beautiful views and a great location for those wanting beach time, but many of its rooms are a bit dated and run down for the price. The hotel is under steady renovation for much of 2015, with updates planned for all rooms and the -- already quite lovely -- rooftop pool, pool bar, and fitness center. Guests could also try comparing prices with Marina All Suites, which is also across the street from Ipanema-Leblon beach.
Porto Bay Rio Internacional Hotel

Porto Bay Rio Internacional Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Porto Bay Rio Internacional Hotel is located across the street from the popular Copacabana beach. This clean, 117-room hotel is a good mid-range option with simple, sleek decor including blonde wood floors, small modern bathrooms, and a nearly all-white color palette. All rooms have stocked minibars and electric kettles, and some have balconies overlooking the ocean. The small rooftop pool, poolside bar, and fitness center all have great views, and on the beach, attendants provide guests with towels, chairs, and umbrellas. There are also tasty on-site restaurants (one with a free breakfast buffet), and 24-hour room service is available. However, there is a pesky fee for Wi-Fi and the spa only offers limited services.
Hotel Granada

Hotel Granada Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 157-room Hotel Granada is an upper-middle-range hotel in the Lapa neighborhood of Rio De Janeiro. Known for its nightlife as well as its streetwalkers and pickpockets, Lapa is not considered particularly safe, though it is central, near the business area of town and several popular attractions. The rooms have minibars and air-conditioning, and are moderately sized and simply adorned, offering a comfortable stay. The hotel offers a free breakfast, and its rooftop pool and fitness center have great views over the city. Guests may also want to consider Promenade Barra First, which is in a safer neighborhood and has a bigger pool.
Promenade Barra First

Promenade Barra First Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Promenade Barra First is an upper-middle-range hotel in Barra da Tijuca. The 14-floor hotel is located along Avenida das Americas -- a busy highway that runs through a safe residential neighborhood. The hotel has a conference center, so it serves many local and foreign business clients, but weekends are popular with families and couples. 218 Deluxe Suites have wooden floors and unfurnished balconies, but small bathrooms show some wear. A hot buffet breakfast is included in the room rate and spotty Wi-Fi is free in all areas. Guests have access to a resort-style swimming pool and huge fitness center next door.
Hotel Sao Francisco

Hotel Sao Francisco Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 207-room Hotel Sao Francisco is an upper-middle-range property in downtown Rio De Janeiro, an historic and bustling area within walking distance of Praza Quinze. Geared toward business clients, the hotel has several meeting rooms, two restaurants, a rooftop dipping pool, and a sauna. Guest rooms are nothing special, decor-wise, though are modern and clean with minibars, and some have soaking tubs. Breakfast and Wi-Fi are included. While there's plenty of bars and restaurants in the area, it tends to get quiet and may be less safe in the evening hours.
Golden Tulip Continental

Golden Tulip Continental Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Golden Tulip is an upper-mid-range hotel with 275 rooms, located in a quiet and residential area not far from Copacabana's beach and tourism scene. Common areas and seven floors of rooms were renovated in 2014. Renovated rooms have a contemporary but understated ambience and feature minibars, safes, and flat-screen TVs, but lack balconies. Other hotel features include a restaurant with a free hot buffet breakfast and a (tiny) rooftop swimming pool with a poolside bar and phenomenal views of the ocean and Rio's famous Christ the Redeemer statue. Other perks include a steam room and fitness center with gorgeous views. Wi-Fi is free, but high-speed access costs extra, and while there's no parking on-site, there are several parking lots in the area.
Hotel Premier Copacabana

Hotel Premier Copacabana Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 110-room Hotel Premier Copacabana is an upper-middle-range property in the Copacabana neighborhood of Rio De Janeiro, about a 10-minute walk from the beach. Renovated in 2014, the hotel feels modern and fresh, with a purple and black color scheme in the lobby, bouquets of fresh flowers, and a petite rooftop pool and patio with great views. The rooms are moderately sized and simply decorated, with minibars and flat-screen TVs. However, air-conditioners can be loud, and noise can carry from the street onto lower floors. It may be worth checking out the Casa Mosquito, a smaller property that's a bit further from the beach, though more peaceful.
