Relais & Chateaux Santa Teresa

Relais & Chateaux Santa Teresa Rating: 5.0 Pearls

Relais & Chateaux Santa Teresa is a historic mansion turned luxurious boutique hotel located on a former coffee plantation in Santa Teresa. It features gorgeous tropical decor, which includes bright cabanas in the lounge, lots of lush greenery (by the pool, on the grounds), tiled mosaics, and island-themed bed runners in the rooms. The lower-level rooms aren't quite as upscale as the rest of the hotel, but they do have sleek bathrooms, wood floors, flat-screen TVs, and a light, airy feel. Suites are higher-end, with extras such as four-poster beds of tropical wood, standalone tubs, and shady terraces. The hotel also features a gorgeous spa, a rooftop pool with sweeping views of the city, and a restaurant serving delicious French-influenced Brazilian cuisine.
Copacabana Palace

Copacabana Palace Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The palatial 243-room Copacabana Palace is an historic Art Deco hotel just off the beach in Rio De Janeiro. The luxury property, now part of the Belmond hotel group, is classic and classy, with spacious, high-ceilinged common spaces and service staff that attend to guests throughout the hotel, the pool, and on the beach. Rooms are plush and elegant, and many have city or ocean views, well-stocked minibars, and beautifully tiled Juliet balconies. Features include a luxe spa, heated outdoor pool, and three highly regarded restaurants, as well as a lounge with a live DJ. This is one of the best hotels in town, and among the most expensive. Guests seeking something less formal, though still luxurious, could try Relais & Chateaux Santa Teresa, which sits upon a tropically landscaped former coffee plantation.
Royal Tulip Rio de Janeiro

Royal Tulip Rio de Janeiro Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Royal Tulip Rio de Janeiro is a four-pearl property across the street from the breathtakingly beautiful São Conrado beach. The hotel serves business clients and leisure travelers alike, and is well known for its quality conference facilities and meetings rooms. Rooms are comfortable and stylish, with sweeping ocean and Pedra da Gávea rock views from private balconies. The hotel has three restaurants and a huge rooftop swimming pool. The fitness center and kids' club go above-and-beyond what's usually found in Rio, and the lobby bar hosts occasional live music. Free Wi-Fi and a free breakfast buffet are nice extras. Expect a 20-minute drive from the tourist area of Copacabana. For some the distance is a perk, while others may feel it's too far away from the action. Note that the hotel is located near Rocinha, an area that can feel seedy.
Hotel Marina Palace

Hotel Marina Palace Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 150-room Hotel Marina Palace is a towering, beachside property in the Leblon neighborhood of Rio De Janeiro, a pricey residential area with restaurants and shops. The upscale hotel has beautiful views and a great location for those wanting beach time, but many of its rooms are a bit dated and run down for the price. The hotel is under steady renovation for much of 2015, with updates planned for all rooms and the -- already quite lovely -- rooftop pool, pool bar, and fitness center. Guests could also try comparing prices with Marina All Suites, which is also across the street from Ipanema-Leblon beach.
Hotel Granada

Hotel Granada Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 157-room Hotel Granada is an upper-middle-range hotel in the Lapa neighborhood of Rio De Janeiro. Known for its nightlife as well as its streetwalkers and pickpockets, Lapa is not considered particularly safe, though it is central, near the business area of town and several popular attractions. The rooms have minibars and air-conditioning, and are moderately sized and simply adorned, offering a comfortable stay. The hotel offers a free breakfast, and its rooftop pool and fitness center have great views over the city. Guests may also want to consider Promenade Barra First, which is in a safer neighborhood and has a bigger pool.
Promenade Barra First

Promenade Barra First Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Promenade Barra First is an upper-middle-range hotel in Barra da Tijuca. The 14-floor hotel is located along Avenida das Americas -- a busy highway that runs through a safe residential neighborhood. The hotel has a conference center, so it serves many local and foreign business clients, but weekends are popular with families and couples. 218 Deluxe Suites have wooden floors and unfurnished balconies, but small bathrooms show some wear. A hot buffet breakfast is included in the room rate and spotty Wi-Fi is free in all areas. Guests have access to a resort-style swimming pool and huge fitness center next door.
Golden Tulip Continental

Golden Tulip Continental Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Golden Tulip is an upper-mid-range hotel with 275 rooms, located in a quiet and residential area not far from Copacabana's beach and tourism scene. Common areas and seven floors of rooms were renovated in 2014. Renovated rooms have a contemporary but understated ambience and feature minibars, safes, and flat-screen TVs, but lack balconies. Other hotel features include a restaurant with a free hot buffet breakfast and a (tiny) rooftop swimming pool with a poolside bar and phenomenal views of the ocean and Rio's famous Christ the Redeemer statue. Other perks include a steam room and fitness center with gorgeous views. Wi-Fi is free, but high-speed access costs extra, and while there's no parking on-site, there are several parking lots in the area.
Hotel Premier Copacabana

Hotel Premier Copacabana Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 110-room Hotel Premier Copacabana is an upper-middle-range property in the Copacabana neighborhood of Rio De Janeiro, about a 10-minute walk from the beach. Renovated in 2014, the hotel feels modern and fresh, with a purple and black color scheme in the lobby, bouquets of fresh flowers, and a petite rooftop pool and patio with great views. The rooms are moderately sized and simply decorated, with minibars and flat-screen TVs. However, air-conditioners can be loud, and noise can carry from the street onto lower floors. It may be worth checking out the Casa Mosquito, a smaller property that's a bit further from the beach, though more peaceful.
Windsor Palace Hotel

Windsor Palace Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Windsor Palace is an upper-mid-range hotel that has a central Copacabana location. This 18-floor hotel -- just a block from the beach -- underwent a renovation in 2014 and has 85 clean and spacious rooms with some balconies. A rooftop swimming pool, adjacent fitness center, free ride to the airport, and free Wi-Fi throughout are nice bonuses, but there's a charge for breakfast. Overall, this hotel is a good pick with cleaner and fresher rooms than what's usually found at this price point.
Golden Tulip Regente

Golden Tulip Regente Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Golden Tulip Regent -- an upper-mid-range hotel -- offers a picture-perfect beachfront location at Posto 5 area in Copacabana. Following a three-year renovation, most parts of the hotel now offer a fresh and contemporary look in the public areas, and a modern look in the rooms. Oceanfront rooms come with spectacular sea views and the Club Lounge offers a stylish living room type facility serving continental gourmet breakfast and free drinks in the late afternoons to those who book a Club Level room. The stylish rooftop pool has phenomenal views over Copacabana beach and Sugarloaf Mountain. Freebies include Wi-Fi and a breakfast buffet with hot and cold items. Overall, this is an excellent spot for families and couples looking for a beach vacation, although room decor (even in renovated rooms) is bland.
