L'Auberge Del Mar

L'Auberge Del Mar Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The 120-room L'Auberge Del Mar is one of the top hotels on the Southern California coastline. It's located in beautiful Del Mar Village, right next to the beach, and its farm-to-table restaurant is exceptional. But although rooms are homey and have high-tech amenities, some of the views could be better, and few have tubs.

Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa

Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 210-room hotel in picturesque La Jolla has lovely grounds and Spanish Colonial-style architecture. But rooms, though large, sometimes lack high-tech amenities such as flat-screen TVs. Construction, while the hotel is trying to keep it minimal, may bother some. The hotel has more charm than other hotels in its price range in this upscale seaside community, and should have even more by the time renovations are complete.

Loews Coronado Bay Resort & Spa

Loews Coronado Bay Resort & Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 439-room resort right on the San Diego Bay, five minutes from the beach, is made for families, with three pools and activities galore (surf lessons, gondola rides in a private marina, a teen lounge...the list goes on). But its isolated location on the Coronado peninsula is less convenient for seeing the sights, and extra fees can make guests feel nickel-and-dimed.

Paradise Point Resort and Spa

Paradise Point Resort and Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 462-room property near Sea World has sprawling, 44-acre grounds on a private island, activities galore (tennis, a putting green, water sports, basketball), five pools, a mile-long beach, bonfire pits and a spa. Rooms were renovated in 2010 and feature Balinese-inspired decor, patios, 42-inch flat-screen TVs, and iPod docks. But bathrooms could have used more of an upgrade, and some rooms have views of the parking lot.

La Valencia

La Valencia Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 112-room La Valencia Hotel's pink, Mediterranean-style building, constructed in 1926, remains an icon in La Jolla. It has a pool, several restaurants, and a great location next to the beach, amidst downtown La Jolla's shops and galleries. But some guest rooms are small, and parking is expensive.

Omni La Costa Resort and Spa

Omni La Costa Resort and Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 400-acre, 611-room megaresort near Legoland is packed with family features, including large rooms, six pools with waterslides, and an impressive kids club. The spa, golf courses, tennis courts, and on-site shopping help ensure adults have fun as well, but there are extra fees for almost everything.

Hotel del Coronado

Hotel del Coronado Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The iconic, family-friendly Hotel del Coronado is one of the largest and best-known resorts in Southern California, with 679 rooms right on the beach and an acclaimed fine dining restaurant and wine bar. It's located in charming Coronado Village, a short drive away from San Diego’s main attractions. But some rooms and bathrooms are small for the price, and could use updating.

Beach Village at The Del

Beach Village at The Del Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Beach Village at The Del is the more luxurious section if the iconic Hotel del Coronado, offering big upscale cottages right on the sand. Beach Village guests get exclusive extras that Hotel del Coronado guests do not: private pools, use of the Windsor Club Cottage, a free breakfast buffet, and better in-room amenities, such as iPod docks, fireplaces, kitchenettes, and terraces. The beachfront location is impossible to beat, and Beach Village guests get free beach towels, chairs, and umbrellas. But prices are steep and there are some flaws: some ground-floor units have privacy issues due to passing pedestrian traffic, there are extra fees for Wi-Fi and parking, and some complain service isn't as seamless as it should be for this level of hotel.

Carlsbad Seapointe Resort

Carlsbad Seapointe Resort Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The Carlsbad Seapointe Resort's large (if bland) condos are convenient for families, with full kitchens and (in most) ocean views. It's across the street from the beach and has lots of kid-friendly activities, including kids' pool, a playground, fire pits for marshmallow roasting, and miniature golf. But it's a 10-minute drive to the restaurants and shops in downtown Carlsbad, and the beach could be nicer.

La Jolla Cove Suites

La Jolla Cove Suites Rating: 2.5 Pearls

This main reason to stay at La Jolla Cove Suites is for the location, right across the street from the beach. The motel-style property offers suites featuring kitchens with mini-fridges, stovetops, wet bars, and ovens; most units have ocean-view balconies. Rooms were renovated with tropical beach chic decor, and the pool area is open year-round and features several barbecue grills. There's no fitness center, but guests get free access to the well-equipped La Jolla Sports Club. Other freebies include a breakfast buffet and Wi-Fi access. This might be an acceptable budget option in posh La Jolla, but it's worth checking rates are other nearby stays.
