L'Auberge Del Mar

L'Auberge Del Mar Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The 120-room L'Auberge Del Mar is one of the top hotels on the Southern California coastline. It's located in beautiful Del Mar Village, right next to the beach, and its farm-to-table restaurant is exceptional. But although rooms are homey and have high-tech amenities, some of the views could be better, and few have tubs.
Rancho Valencia Resort

Rancho Valencia Resort Rating: 5.0 Pearls

This 49-room luxury resort is located in Rancho Santa Fe, a wealthy residential community in the hills of Southern California, on 40 acres of lush grounds. The Spanish-style suites, all with fireplaces and patios, are located in 26 casitas spread across the sprawling property, creating a rare level of privacy for guests. Excellent freebies (including Wi-Fi, minibar items, parking, morning juice and newspaper delivery, and breakfast), as well as a wonderful restaurant and an upscale fitness center with free classes contribute to the experience of exclusive pampering.
Palomar San Diego

Palomar San Diego Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The Hotel Palomar (formerly the Se San Diego) is one of San Diego's most luxurious hotels, and also one of its coolest, with a trendy rooftop bar, zen design, and a location just north of the lively Gaslamp Quarter, next to a major concert venue. But the nightlife can be noisy and most rooms have king beds, so leave the kids at home.
The Keating Hotel by Pininfarina

The Keating Hotel by Pininfarina Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Keating Hotel by Pininfarina is most notable for its striking red and black interiors designed by the Italian car company behind Ferrari and Maserati. Just like the cars, this historic hotel's makeover is sleek and chic, with a sexy ambience. The industrial-style rooms have Italian luxuries such as Lavazza espresso machines and custom-designed glass rainfall showers. Not everyone will appreciate the lack of privacy some of the showers offer, though, and guests have to pay for upscale amenities (Wi-Fi, turndown service, the Lavazza espresso and tea, and a welcome amenity) by way of the nightly resort fee. The Gaslamp Quarter location is great for partying, but travelers who don't want to be in the same building as Coyote Ugly, which is bumping late into the night, should check out the nearby Andaz San Diego, or the eco-friendly Hotel Indigo.
Grande Colonial Hotel

Grande Colonial Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

With a central location in La Jolla, a heated outdoor pool, and an array of great services -- including in-room massages, and daily turndown -- this upscale historic boutique is a solid pick for a relaxing coastal getaway. Rooms have classic, contemporary decor with a European feel, and modern technologies, such as iPod docks, HD flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. Suites have wooden floors, cute kitchenettes, and cozy fireplaces. There are several beaches within walking distance, and dozens of restaurants and boutiques nearby -- but there is no fitness center on-site, and some rooms are a tad small for the price. Travelers wanting more spacious rooms and an on-site spa could try the Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa.
Andaz San Diego

Andaz San Diego Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 159-room boutique is one of the sleekest hotels in the Gaslamp Quarter, with a popular rooftop lounge and a sexy wine bar. Rooms are minimally decorated but attractive, with slate-tiled bathrooms and modern amenities such as free Wi-Fi and large flat-screen TVs. Some minibar items are also available for no additional fee, and the rooftop pool is a nice spot for a dip.
Britt Scripps Inn

Britt Scripps Inn Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This romantic Victorian inn near Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo has nine quaint, richly decorated rooms with flat-screen TVs, luxurious amenities (including decadent bedding and butler service), and free Wi-Fi. The free, delicious breakfast is made to order, and free wine and cheese is served each evening in the parlor.
Hotel Solamar San Diego

Hotel Solamar San Diego Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 235-room Kimpton boutique just outside the Gaslamp Quarter is notable for its stylish rooms with beach-inspired decor and its attractive rooftop pool area. There are some great freebies -- a free nightly wine and beer hour, free coffee and tea in the lobby, free newspaper delivery, and free bicycles for exploring the city -- but you'll have to pay for parking, Wi-Fi, and business center services. The nearby Hard Rock Hotel is sometimes a little cheaper, but it's less kid-friendly.
W San Diego Hotel

W San Diego Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 258-room W San Diego Hotel is a youthful, upscale property in Downtown San Diego, within walking distance to Broadway Pier and the Gaslamp Quarter. Modern common areas include a stylish lobby lounge, a vibrant restaurant, and a posh, happening rooftop bar. Blue-and-white rooms have chic furnishings, minibars, and cool window seats, but some are on the small side for the price. The hotel offers a (very small) heated rooftop pool surrounded by lounge chairs and a fitness center, but the fees are high for Wi-Fi and parking. The just as scene-y Andaz has bigger standard rooms and a cooler location in the Gaslamp Quarter, so it may be worth comparing rates.
Bristol Hotel

Bristol Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This upper-middle-range boutique hotel in the center of downtown San Diego offers modern, sophisticated accommodations with fairly reasonable rates. Guests are within an easy walk of the city’s trendy Gaslamp Quarter and the convention center. A romantic on-site restaurant and bar serves three meals and has happy hour specials, while the ninth-floor has an event space with the city’s only retractible roof. The 102 guest rooms have coffeemakers and stylish black, white, and red decor; pets are welcome without a deposit, with fun perks including pet beds and a nightly turndown service. Drawbacks include the tiny gym, lack of a pool, and thin walls. The nearby Best Western Plus Bayside Inn has a pool and similar rates, but lacks the sophistication of the Bristol.
