Hard Rock Hotel San Diego

Hard Rock Hotel San Diego Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 420-room Hard Rock, located in the hip Gaslamp Quarter, hosts wild parties on weekends at its popular rooftop pool and bar. It's a haven for twenty- and thirty-somethings (including celebrities), and trendy rooms have big flat-screen TVs and high-thread-count sheets. But it's not particularly kid-friendly (420 rooms and a restaurant called Maryjane's where happy hour starts at 4:20...you get the idea), so families should consider the nearby Hotel Solamar.

Andaz San Diego

Andaz San Diego Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 159-room boutique is one of the sleekest hotels in the Gaslamp Quarter, with a popular rooftop lounge and a sexy wine bar. Rooms are minimally decorated but attractive, with slate-tiled bathrooms and modern amenities such as free Wi-Fi and large flat-screen TVs. Some minibar items are also available for no additional fee, and the rooftop pool is a nice spot for a dip.

W San Diego Hotel

W San Diego Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This stylish 261-room hotel in Downtown San Diego is as hip as you'd expect a W to be, with a happening rooftop lounge, a rooftop pool, and a lively lobby area. Rooms have beach-inspired decor, window seats, and modern technology, including iPod docks and flat-screen TVs. But the just as scene-y Andaz has bigger standard rooms and a cooler location in the Gaslamp Quarter.

Tower 23 Hotel

Tower 23 Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Leisure travelers looking for a modern boutique hotel with a cool, beachy vibe and easy access to the Pacific Ocean may want to consider Tower23 Hotel. Rooms range from standard "pads" to suites; many have balconies and at least partial ocean views. Potential guests may want to take note that rooms surrounding the upper courtyard are loud at times, as the spot attracts both hotel guests and non-guests alike. There's no need for a car for those looking to primarily explore the immediate neighborhood of Pacific Beach, with its many restaurants, surf shops, activities, and pier. The hotel also loans out bikes, which are great for exploring the beach path out back. The hotel is often sold out on weekends, despite its hefty price tag. Travelers might also want to check out the Pacific Terrace Hotel.

Hampton Inn San Diego-Sea World/Airport Area

Hampton Inn San Diego-Sea World/Airport Area Rating: 2.5 Pearls

This three-floor, 208-room hotel is a family-friendly value option with a pool located within a 10-minute drive of Sea World. Multiple freebies are on offer, including free hot breakfast, a free airport shuttle, free coffee in the lobby, free Wi-Fi, and free weekday newspapers. Parking costs a fee, however, and the immediate area -- right off the freeway -- is a bit gritty: Two strip clubs are in close proximity. The lobby is modern and attractive, while rooms are typical generic chain hotel fare; some have microwaves and mini-fridges. It's also worth considering the Best Western Plus Hacienda, which has a more appealing setting near Old Town.
