Hyatt Santa Barbara

Hyatt Santa Barbara Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 171-room Hyatt Santa Barbara is an upper-middle-range hotel that sits across from the ocean in a collection of historic, Spanish colonial-style buildings with white stucco walls and red tile roofs. It’s located around two miles from the main tourist attractions in Santa Barbara. Rooms are basic and a bit tired with loud air conditioning units; some rooms have terraces with gorgeous ocean views. The hotel charges for parking, Wi-Fi, and breakfast.

Inn on Summer Hill

Inn on Summer Hill Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Inn on Summer Hill is a charming beachside bed and breakfast located in the coastal village of Summerland. From the outside, the inn resembles a typical beach home with shaker siding and white decks overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The interior is more country than beachy, with wood-paneled walls or ceilings and wood-burning fireplaces and Jacuzzi tubs in each room. Rooms, which are decorated in a homey style, also have balconies that offer ocean views -- though the Pacific lies just beyond busy Route 101. Each room is different; some have wardrobes and side tables with hand-painted floral designs, while others feature wood flooring instead of carpets. The furniture is nice, but large canopy beds in the rooms makes the space seem crowded. The inn has no pool, but it does have a nice outdoor Jacuzzi that's shaded by white latticework. Overall, it's a lovely place for business and weekend travelers.

Hotel Oceana Santa Barbara

Hotel Oceana Santa Barbara Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Located directly across the street from the ocean, Hotel Oceana Santa Barbara is a cute beachside property ideally located minutes from downtown. The Spanish-style exterior is right at home among the area's palm trees and beach, while the rooms are more simple and modern (though some are extremely tiny or a bit dingy). Each guest room features wood flooring and bright white walls with green-paisley and pink-stripe accents. With iPod docks and LCD flat-screen TVs, the rooms are up-to-date, though the basic bathrooms lack personality. The hotel has two mid-sized pools with private cabanas, but they tend to take on a lot of shade throughout the day. Ultimately, with a great locale near the beach, wharf, pier, and downtown Santa Barbara, Hotel Oceana is a nice choice for tourists and families wanting a quiet place close to the city's action.

Castillo Inn at the Beach

Castillo Inn at the Beach Rating: 2.5 Pearls

While not directly on the beach, this budget-friendly, motel-style property is located about a block away from the marina at Santa Barbara Harbor. It’s close to Stearns Warf, a popular tourist attraction with lots of shopping and dining options. There are few on-site features, but guests can park for free right in front of their rooms, which were renovated in 2013. The Mediterranean-inspired architecture and decor is more attractive than some may expect from a motel.

Inn At East Beach

Inn At East Beach Rating: 2.5 Pearls

The exterior of the two-story, 33-room Inn at East Beach appears outdated and somewhat unappealing, but the inside is modern, clean, and well-maintained. Some of the beach-y, attractive rooms at this budget-friendly property -- billed as a "boutique motel" -- have full-size kitchens. Just note that those advertised as having "partial ocean views" overlook a street and other buildings -- very little of the ocean can actually be seen, but the beach is a short, easy walk away. The Inn at East Beach has a pool, unlike the Castillo Inn, but the Castillo Inn is closer to Stearns Wharf and State Street.
