Canary, a Kimpton Hotel

Canary, a Kimpton Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Canary has been a notable luxury property in Santa Barbara for a number of years, and its purchase by the boutique Kimpton Hotel brand in early 2012 has only increased its appeal. The hotel mixes upscale, classic Santa Barbara decor with a laid-back vibe; the cheerful lobby has pale yellow walls, chandeliers, wrought iron details, and leather couches. The spacious rooms may be the highlight; all are decorated with four-poster beds, hardwood floors, colorful pillows and throws, and bathrooms outfitted in Spanish tile. Tech amenities include iPod docks, flat-screen TVs (both in the room and the bathroom), and Wi-Fi. The hotel's features are plentiful and cater to all types of travelers: meeting rooms, a restaurant serving locally sourced fare, a small rooftop pool, and freebies including a nightly wine hour. The hotel does not have a spa or fitness center, but in-room spa treatments and free access to the gym next door help compensate. It's within walking distance of attractions on State Street, but it's a trek to Stearn's Wharf and the beach; most guests will opt to drive or take the trolley.

El Capitan Canyon

El Capitan Canyon Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Twenty miles north of Santa Barbara, situated on 300 acres of canyon wilderness, El Capitan Canyon offers a camping, or "glamping," experience with enough modern conveniences to satisfy travelers who would rather just semi-rough it. Guests stay in cabins, tents, or yurts; only cabins have en-suite bathrooms. All accommodations have electricity and wooden floors. El Capitan Canyon provides the fun and adventure of camping but with many of the comforts of a hotel.

Ramada Limited Santa Barbara

Ramada Limited Santa Barbara Rating: 2.5 Pearls

This 126-room budget-friendly chain hotel draws business travelers and families with its relaxing outside space and its location within a 10-minute drive of both the airport and downtown Santa Barbara. The swimming pool and adjacent koi pond, a relaxing spot to view ducks and turtles, are highlights. All room levels have the same decor: updated bedding with white duvets, fresh carpeting, and dated pecan furniture. The free continental breakfast, free airport shuttle, and free Wi-Fi add value, but those looking to be within walking distance of the beach should compare rates with the Castillo Inn.

Castillo Inn at the Beach

Castillo Inn at the Beach Rating: 2.5 Pearls

While not directly on the beach, this budget-friendly, motel-style property is located about a block away from the marina at Santa Barbara Harbor. It’s close to Stearns Warf, a popular tourist attraction with lots of shopping and dining options. There are few on-site features, but guests can park for free right in front of their rooms, which were renovated in 2013. The Mediterranean-inspired architecture and decor is more attractive than some may expect from a motel.

Inn At East Beach

Inn At East Beach Rating: 2.5 Pearls

The exterior of the two-story, 33-room Inn at East Beach appears outdated and somewhat unappealing, but the inside is modern, clean, and well-maintained. Some of the beach-y, attractive rooms at this budget-friendly property -- billed as a "boutique motel" -- have full-size kitchens. Just note that those advertised as having "partial ocean views" overlook a street and other buildings -- very little of the ocean can actually be seen, but the beach is a short, easy walk away. The Inn at East Beach has a pool, unlike the Castillo Inn, but the Castillo Inn is closer to Stearns Wharf and State Street.
