Inn and Spa at Loretto

Inn and Spa at Loretto Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This upscale property has a long-standing reputation as one of the finer inns in Santa Fe. A historic chapel adjoins the hotel, the location by the Plaza can't be beat, and the decor is classic southwestern. Highlights include the stylish Luminaria Restaurant that is renowned for its fresh, organic cuisine, and The Spa at Loretto, popular for its varied array of treatments. Rooms have a warm, earthy feel and offer high-tech amenities such as flat-screen TVs and iPod docks, but some are on the small side.
Hilton Santa Fe Golf Resort & Spa at Buffalo Thunder

Hilton Santa Fe Golf Resort & Spa at Buffalo Thunder Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Buffalo Thunder is a sprawling, upscale Hilton resort 14 miles north of Santa Fe on the Pojoaque Pueblo reservation. There’s plenty of fun to be had at the huge casino and the golf course with views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The pottery and Native American art on display throughout the hotel, and the rooms themselves, are spectacular, but be prepared for a rowdy pool party during summer weekends -- and hefty fees (Internet, golf, spa adds up).
Inn of the Governors

Inn of the Governors Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Inn of the Governors is an competitively priced upper-mid-range hotel three blocks from the Plaza. Colorful Santa Fe-style decor gives the rooms and interior spaces a cozy, authentic feel, and the hopping Del Charro Saloon attracts the locals and serves tasty eats. A free breakfast buffet, afternoon tea and sherry, and free covered parking all add good value to this charming hotel -- and the heated outdoor pool and Jacuzzi are nice perks (though the pool is on the small side).
Fairmont Heritage Place, El Corazon de Santa Fe

Fairmont Heritage Place, El Corazon de Santa Fe Rating: 3.5 Pearls

SINCE OUR VISIT, THE RESIDENCE CLUB AT EL CORAZON RE-OPENED AS THE FAIRMONT HERITAGE PLACE, EL CORAZON DE SANTA FE. The Residence Club at El Corazon is a collection of shared-ownership vacation homes in a gated community -- an elegant, fully equipped sanctum just two blocks from the Plaza. The luxurious and spacious two-bedroom condos contain every convenience of home and are furnished with the most modern appliances and gorgeous furniture. Since these are essentially private homes, there is no restaurant, spa, or pool on-site, but these amenities are available at partner businesses.
DoubleTree by Hilton Santa Fe

DoubleTree by Hilton Santa Fe Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The mid-range DoubleTree Santa Fe is located among several other chain hotels along the Cerrillos Road strip, about six miles from the Plaza. The Holiday Inn delivers all the budget traveler staples: free parking, free Wi-Fi, and rooms with microwaves. There's a Jacuzzi and a heated indoor/outdoor pool as well, though some may find its layout awkward for swimming. The chain-like rooms are bright and clean, with comfortable beds. The Santa Fe Sage Inn has similar prices and a location closer to the Plaza, but lacks the Jacuzzi and microwaves.
The Lodge at Santa Fe

The Lodge at Santa Fe Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The Lodge at Santa Fe is a mid-range hotel without the frills of a destination resort. The 127 rooms and 25 suites are spacious, comfortable, and feature Southwestern-style decor. A 2008 renovation brought some updated decor including Pueblo-style artwork and adobe fireplaces (in some rooms). Room perks include coffeemakers, free Wi-Fi (though some guests complain about a weak signal), and mountain views. Some rooms also have balconies and separate tubs and showers. A free shuttle brings guests to the nearby Plaza and there's a good New Mexican restaurant on-site. There are additional hotel highlights such as a lobby with a wood-burning fireplace, an outdoor pool and Jacuzzi, a small fitness center, free parking, and a wedding chapel.
Villas de Santa Fe

Villas de Santa Fe Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The mid-range Villas de Santa Fe may be one of the best values in town. The all-suite condos are large, clean, and have the latest tech features, as well as kitchenettes with Cuisinart appliances. A free shuttle is offered within three miles, which helps avoid the headache of parking at the Plaza (which is five blocks away). But the pool area isn't big -- and there is no restaurant at the hotel.
Silver Saddle Motel

Silver Saddle Motel Rating: 2.5 Pearls

The 17-room Silver Saddle Motel provides an economy roadside vacation with Southwestern touches, cowboy decor, free Wi-Fi, and on-site parking. The motel offers a gift shop, free continental breakfast, and an outdoor dining patio along with picnic areas. Rooms are named after Western characters and feature kitschy style (think: cowboy hats on the walls and patterned quilts on the beds), flat-screen TVs, and, in some cases, kitchenettes -- but this is a motel, so expect some datedness. The nearby El Rey Inn, which offers more hotel frills and rooms with fireplaces, is another option.
Santa Fe Sage Inn

Santa Fe Sage Inn Rating: 2.5 Pearls

This 156-room budget property, located across from a popular shopping center and a short drive from Santa Fe Plaza, is one of the most affordable hotels in its location. The property has motel-style layout, with exterior entrances to the rooms and a parking lot in front of the building. The hotel does offer a free shuttle, so it’s possible to leave the car behind while exploring. There's a small outdoor pool on the property, as well as a laundry room and a meeting room. Rooms are small, with basic but pleasant Southwestern-style decor and tube TVs (though some do have flat-screens). Rooms at the Best Western Plus Inn of Santa are larger and have fresher decor, but the Best Western's location is farther from the Plaza.
Holiday Inn Express Hotel Santa Fe Cerrillos

Holiday Inn Express Hotel Santa Fe Cerrillos Rating: 2.5 Pearls

The mid-range, 76-room Holiday Inn Express Santa Fe Cerrillos is located alongside several other chain hotels on the “hotel row” on Cerrillos Road, six miles from Santa Fe Plaza. The hotel is a pretty standard mid-range chain, with a bevy of freebies including free parking, Wi-Fi, and a hot breakfast. The rooms are clean but unexceptional, with bland corporate-style furnishings and in most, old tube TVs. It's worth considering the similarly priced Santa Fe Sage Inn, which offers comparable amenities and rooms (though no microwaves), but has a location closer to the Plaza.
