Dakota Hotel Edinburgh

Dakota Hotel Edinburgh Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The upscale, 132-room Dakota Edinburgh is a fabulously stylish hotel, seven miles from the airport, in what, from the outside, appears to be a forbidding black cube. Inside, the Dakota is a creative, modern delight with a tweedy boho vibe, lots of exposed brick, and one of Scotland's best-reviewed seafood restaurants. The decor throughout is aviation-inspired, with first-class attention to detail at mid-range prices. The location is a bit remote for tourists and avid sightseers, but great for business travelers.
The Dunstane Hotel

The Dunstane Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 38-room upscale Dunstane Hotel is a family-owned boutique hotel built in two luxury Victorian townhouses, circa 1852, that face one another across an Edinburgh street. The owners come from the Orkney Islands, and take pride in infusing elements of their heritage into the property, creating a quirky, classy atmosphere with plush fabrics, elaborate period-style wallpaper with a twist, and, of course, fine Scotch whiskey. Individually designed and decorated guest rooms combine modern luxury and period character.
The Scotsman Hotel

The Scotsman Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Scotsman is an upscale historic boutique located right off the Royal Mile, in the heart of the Old Town. The building is a former printing house, and many of the original features are preserved, including an Italian marble staircase, ornate ceilings, and oak paneling. Luxurious amenities include a relaxing spa complete with an indoor pool, a large fitness center with classes and personal trainers, and a wonderful brasserie. But the individually decorated rooms have inconsistent quality and decor -- while some have beautiful wood paneling, ornamental fireplaces, and great city views, others have blander furnishings and lack wow factor. However, they all have luxurious amenities, such as Egyptian cotton linens, Highland Aromatic toiletries, and flat-screen TVs.
Tigerlily

Tigerlily Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Tigerlily is housed in an historic Georgian townhouse, but inside, it's thoroughly modern. This stylish 33-room boutique hotel has few amenities -- just a small lobby, a restaurant, and a bar (no fitness center or spa here). But it attracts guests with its gorgeous rooms and convenient New Town location, within walking distance of sights, restaurants, and shops. The hip bar and restaurant, where guests and locals can enjoy tasty cocktails and organic meals, features funky chandeliers, bright velvet furniture, and patterned wall panels. The rooms are high-tech, with flat-screen TVs at the foots of the beds and pre-loaded iPods, and have wood floors and sophisticated contemporary style. Rooms are individually decorated, and many feature bright color accents and statement patterns; all have high-end extras such as plush bedding, fresh flowers, and sleek bathrooms with upscale White Company toiletries.
