Honor Mansion, A Wine Country Resort

Honor Mansion, A Wine Country Resort Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The 13-room, luxury boutique B&B Honor Mansion in Healdsburg may look like little more than a charming Victorian house from the street, but it actually sits on four acres of beautifully landscaped grounds that include tennis courts, a lap pool, a PGA putting green, and so much more. In addition to its luxury resort amenities, the intimate inn is filled with thoughtful extras, such as afternoon wine tastings, coffee at your door each morning, and snacks available all day long. Guestrooms are romantic and cozy, with fireplaces, memory foam mattress toppers, and ornate, tiled bathrooms. And, to top it all off, the hotel is within walking distance of downtown Healdsburg's shops and restaurants, and Napa and Sonoma's wineries -- many of which Honor Mansion's owners have relationships with -- are within easy driving distance.
Bungalows 313

Bungalows 313 Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This quaint, small B&B in the heart of downtown Sonoma is made up of six homey and attractive bungalows. Each bungalow is different -- some have wood-burning fireplaces, others have Jacuzzi tubs, separate living areas, or full kitchens -- so guests should specify exactly what they want when booking. The property is lacking certain amenities, such as a pool and a gym (although guests receive free passes to a nearby health club that has both). But the location is prime: Just around the corner is Sonoma Plaza, full of shops and restaurants, and the bungalows are right on the Sonoma Bike Path, leading to more than 40 area wineries.
The Cottage Inn & Spa

The Cottage Inn & Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Sonoma's intimate Cottage Inn & Spa has only nine rooms, giving it the feel of an intimate bed and breakfast. Only the Fountain View Cottage has TV, which may be a deal-breaker for some, but all rooms and suites have free Wi-Fi, and some have extra features such as kitchens and hot tubs. A free breakfast is delivered to rooms every morning, but there's no on-site restaurant. That said, the inn's a block from Sonoma's town square, meaning there's plenty of places to eat nearby. The spa offers deep tissue and Swedish aromatherapy massages.
Hotel Healdsburg

Hotel Healdsburg Rating: 4.0 Pearls

It's hard to find fault with this 55-room boutique in charming Healdsburg, which delivers luxurious rooms (most with big soaking tubs), a convenient location within walking distance of tasting rooms (no designated driver required), and ample free perks that help guests feel pampered (free valet parking, free breakfast, free minibar items in the rooms). But some may find the modern design -- exposed concrete inside, and a plain, boxy exterior -- a little cold. At least the contrasting rugs, wood, and -- on the outside -- climbing ivy, help soften the effect.
H2 Hotel

H2 Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 36-room boutique hotel in the heart of Healdsburg is a good pick for eco-conscious folks looking for something convenient to wineries with a modern, hip, relaxed vibe. The rooms are all done in a minimalist style, using sustainable materials, and are equipped with all the high-tech amenities you could want: flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, DVD players, and free Wi-Fi. Plus, they come with private balconies or patios. The H2 offers some pretty interesting perks -- from "water stations" on each floor offering flat or sparkling water, to free loaner bikes, to free weekend yoga classes in the Green Room. Another big highlight is Spoonbar, an on-site restaurant serving modern Mediterranean fare made with fresh, local ingredients and seasonal cocktails (indoor and outdoor seating available). There's also a nice solar-heated outdoor pool surrounded by greenery.
Kenwood Inn and Spa

Kenwood Inn and Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Kenwood Inn and Spa is located in Sonoma County, but the hotel and grounds evoke beautiful Tuscany. The European-style property impresses with its lush gardens and courtyards, and exquisite fountains and pools. The 29 private and spacious rooms are individually decorated with romantic Mediterranean-inspired decor, and are furnished with cozy fireplaces, quality Italian linens, oversize showers, and personal balconies (some with stunning vineyard views). Extensive freebies (such as in-room drinks and gourmet snacks), plush robes, and an ultra-luxurious spa help ensure that guests feel pampered. The hotel’s free breakfast has an array of fresh juices, homemade granola and pastries, and special cooked-to-order dishes, while its restaurant serves local cuisine using ingredients from local ranchers, cheese makers, and farmers. All in all, it's one of the best romantic boutique picks in Sonoma Wine Country -- though it's also worth considering Bungalows 313, located in the downtown Sonoma.
Hotel Les Mars

Hotel Les Mars Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This upscale property feels like a European mansion, and exudes elegance on every level, from the rooms' high ceilings with exposed wooden beams, to the dark cherry wood furniture. With 16 rooms, it's small enough that guests receive the special attention (such as a fresh breakfast delivered to your door each morning) without being overwhelmed by staff. The rooms are equipped with fireplaces and free Wi-Fi, and feature European-style design that includes draped four-poster beds, Italian linens, and antique-style furniture; some bathrooms have big soaking tubs. For its high price, though, you'd expect to get a little bit more on the facilities side -- there's just a small pool and no gym, restaurant, or spa.
Vintners Inn

Vintners Inn Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This charming property is located right off Highway 101 just a few minutes outside Santa Rosa, but it feels a world apart. It is part of the renowned Ferrari-Carano winery, and has some of the most beautifully landscaped grounds in the area, with fountains, an overall old-world feel, and a two-mile jogging trail around the vineyards. The 44 rooms, though a bit bland in some cases, have warm decor, wood beams, high-tech amenities, and either a balcony or a private patio. There’s a full-service spa and a couple of nice freebies, but the highlight is definitely the acclaimed John Ash & Co. restaurant.
Jack London Lodge

Jack London Lodge Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The Jack London Lodge doesn't have the most luxurious rooms in wine country, but they're spacious and comfortable in a basic way. Everything is no-frills, from the mediocre but clean floral bedding to the tube TVs to the simple bathrooms. The inescapable motel vibe is probably due to the fact that the facilities themselves are from an updated motel (the vacancy sign outside should tip you off). The best parts of the property can be found outdoors: the well maintained grounds blooming with flowers and the cozy pool area. This is a nice spot for people who are willing to stay outside Sonoma and Napa to save some cash -- and want a friendly, neighborhood environment. Aside from the on-site restaurant and saloon, there are plenty of restaurants and local bars nearby.
