The James Royal Palm

The James Royal Palm Rating: 4.5 Pearls

This beautifully restored, 390-room beachfront property is a modern reincarnation of Miami’s first luxury hotel -- The Royal Palm. Highlights include two swimming pools, two restaurants, three bars, a nightclub, a full-service spa, stylish rooms, and a great address on swank Collins Avenue. The rooms are modern and sophisticated, with well-stocked minibars and original paintings by local artists. Guests have to pay a daily “beach fee,” but they get a lot in return, including free bikes, paddleboards, umbrellas, beach chairs, and fitness classes.

W South Beach

W South Beach Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The stunning 312-room W South Beach -- located on the beach, on the northern outskirts of South Beach -- blends cute comforts, intricate design (that spares no expense), and flawless service. Large, modern rooms; terraces angled to overlook the ocean; elegant landscaping around the pool; a lush Bliss spa -- the W tops the Miami greats.

The Setai Miami Beach

The Setai Miami Beach Rating: 5.0 Pearls

Paradise doesn't come cheap. Striking but sober mood-lit design; impeccable service; huge, immaculate rooms; three pools, each a different temperature; and a prime beachside location make the Setai one of the best hotels in Miami. Its restaurants are more about design than food, but several of Miami's best restaurants are just half a block away.

Delano Hotel

Delano Hotel Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The Delano's 195 all-white rooms don't come cheap, but you're paying for surreal, Philippe Starck style and all-night parties at the "water salon." To some, its hip factor has been bested by the Gansevoort or Shore Club, but their style doesn't compare, and good times are still to be had.

The Perry South Beach

The Perry South Beach Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The chic Perry South Beach hotel (formerly the Gansevoort Miami Beach) is a bit removed from the action on the north edge of South Beach, but it still attracts hipsters and stylish families with its rooftop pool parties, attentive staff, large rooms, sexy David Barton gym, and beachfront location. It doesn't quite compare to its high-priced neighbors -- notably the W hotel -- but it's often a fair pick for the price. THE PERRY SOUTH BEACH WILL BE CLOSED INDEFINITELY STARTING APRIL 2013.

The Raleigh Hotel

The Raleigh Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The historic and iconic Raleigh Hotel in Miami has been earning accolades since Life magazine dubbed their pool the most beautiful in America in 1947. Today, the four-pearl Art Deco hotel still gets its fair share of praise and often hosts fashion shoots and parties by the pool. Renovations brought a contemporary restaurant, upgrades to the iconic Martini Bar, and a European-style coffee shop. Scenesters love free vintage bikes and a pop-up design boutique -- plus private access to South Beach, but nobody appreciates the small rooms and daily resort fees. The Raleigh still holds its own, but the scene at neighboring Delano and Shore Club gives it a real run for its money -- and press.

SLS Hotel South Beach

SLS Hotel South Beach Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Since its star-studded opening party in November 2012, the SLS South Beach has become a hot hotel to see and be seen in Miami. The 140-room property features direct beach access, two large pools, two high-profile restaurants, two bars, and a great address on swank Collins Avenue. Celebrity designers Philippe Starck and Lenny Kravitz designed the rooms, which are stylish and sexy, but remarkably small for the price. The Surfcomber Hotel, next door, has the same size rooms at about a third of the cost. Still, the SLS isn’t about relaxing inside -- it’s about soaking up the scene at the pools, restaurants, and beach.

Shore Club

Shore Club Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The beachfront Shore Club prides itself on being a be-seen haunt, with celebrity-fueled restaurants and bars, and a boisterous infinity pool where DJs spin the latest hits. But despite the hotel's party-focused image, the large rooms, attentive service, and beautiful design make for a relaxing stay.

Sagamore Hotel

Sagamore Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A self-proclaimed "art hotel," the beachside Sagamore boasts an impressive private collection of paintings, sculptures, photography, and even video art. But back to the hotel: The suites and bungalows are huge, and the SoBe location is prime. However, the pool is small and service is borderline negligent.

The National

The National Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A moderately priced designer hotel on posh upper Collins Avenue, the National boasts one of the largest, sleekest pools in Miami. Small rooms, though, and relaxed, haphazard service doesn't contend with its super-chic neighbors, the Delano and Sagamore hotels, but a 2013 revamp to exterior and common spaces did help.
