Belmond La Samanna

Belmond La Samanna Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Easily the most luxurious resort in St. Martin, the 55-acre La Samanna resort brings tranquility to an otherwise tourist-filled island. Featuring two beautiful pools, an extensive wine cellar, a yoga and Pilates studio, a European-style spa, and the island's most pristine beach, this 81-room, eight-villa retreat is hard to beat. The vibe is about as fancy as it gets for St. Martin, so of course everything -- from the nightly rates to the dinners and spa treatments -- comes at a sky-high cost.

The Westin Dawn Beach Resort & Spa, St. Maarten

The Westin Dawn Beach Resort & Spa, St. Maarten Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 314-room Westin Dawn Beach's mostly ocean-view rooms, lovely double-decker infinity-edge pool, expansive beachfront grounds, and extensive list of amenities and activities make it a solid option for families and couples. But the overpriced restaurant options are average (especially considering closures during low season). And bigger, better rooms certainly can be found elsewhere -- though not at any of the resorts with comparable amenities.

Esmeralda Resort

Esmeralda Resort Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Located within an upscale community featuring several resorts, restaurants, and one of the island's best beaches, Esmeralda Resort's colorful Creole-style villas offer seclusion and elegance with semi-private pools (shared among four units), stylish tropical rooms, and a well-respected restaurant -- all within a two-minute walk to the beach. Additional features are few, but for self-sufficient couples and families looking for a lush retreat with a great location, Esmeralda delivers the goods.

Sonesta Maho Beach Resort & Casino

Sonesta Maho Beach Resort & Casino Rating: 3.5 Pearls

By far the biggest resort in St. Maarten, this 534-room behemoth is a veritable village with two towers, two pools, three restaurants, the island's largest casino, direct beach access, and a 40-boutique shopping center. Most of the rooms have fresh, modern decor and balconies, though the expensive Wi-Fi is a bit excessive. The crowds can get big and even a bit boisterous. But for families and lively vacationers looking for a playground of a resort, the Sonesta Maho Beach Resort & Casino is a top choice.

Flamingo Beach Resort

Flamingo Beach Resort Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This 240-room, family-oriented resort on Simpson Bay’s Pelican Key is flanked on two sides by the beach, and boasts full kitchens and balconies in every room, a large oceanfront pool, a lively beach bar and restaurant, and beautifully manicured grounds. Disappointingly, the beaches are crowded (often with non-hotel guests) and some rooms are outdated, but for this combination of huge condo-style units and resort-style amenities, the price is more than fair.

The Atrium Beach Resort & Spa, a Festiva Resort

The Atrium Beach Resort & Spa, a Festiva Resort Rating: 3.0 Pearls

For a medium-sized hotel, this 87-room beachfront property has a lot to offer: a beautiful beachfront with water sports and beach bars, a small pool, a lovely spa and salon, and a fitness center. Updated rooms are bright and colorful, and all have balconies and full kitchens. There is no on-site restaurant (though several are mere steps away) and the pool is tiny, but for a hotel with this many features, the rates are excellent.

Mary's Boon Beach Resort

Mary's Boon Beach Resort Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This 37-room beach hotel along Simpson Bay is certainly no luxury resort -- rooms show wear and tear, the pool is untended, and extra features are few. But an amazing beachfront location, small spa, and lush grounds full of character make it almost impossible not to appreciate Mary's Boon. Some people may not appreciate, however, the thunderous sound of planes at the neighboring airport, but then again, the low rates are hard to beat.

Holland House Beach Hotel

Holland House Beach Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The stylish 54-room Holland House Beach Hotel might be missing a pool, spa, and fitness center, but its location in the middle of Philipsburg gives guests the best of everything else -- step out the front door, and you’ll find some of the island’s best shopping on Front Street. And just out the back door, Great Bay Beach and the Caribbean Sea await. Inside, spacious rooms are updated and tastefully designed. Take note: With a surrounding such as this, opting for a beach view is well worth the extra cost.

L'Hoste Hotel

L'Hoste Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Located within an upscale community featuring several resorts, restaurants, and one of the island's best beaches, the colorful 56-room L'Hoste Hotel has just the basic features with a deserted pool, and a breakfast-only restaurant. But a one-minute walk to Orient Bay and the hotel's partner restaurant, bar, spa, and boutique gives guests additional resort-like amenities -- all for budget-hotel prices.

Royal Palm Beach Resort

Royal Palm Beach Resort Rating: 3.0 Pearls

A central location on a quieter portion of Simpson Bay places this 140-room resort close to virtually every attraction on the island’s Dutch side. Solid (though not quite spectacular) amenities include a beachfront restaurant, a pool with swim-up bar, a fitness center, a cocktail lounge, and family-oriented activities. Generous rooms with full kitchens may appeal to families looking to save money while traveling, but couples wishing for a romantic getaway might consider elsewhere.
